Chapter 1 of My Husband Sold My Grandfather's Masterpiece

I set the osso buco on the stove and turned the heat down low. The smell filled the kitchen. Rich. Warm. Like the holidays were supposed to be. I hummed along to the Christmas music playing from my phone on the counter. Bing Crosby. My grandfather used to play this album every year.

The brownstone kitchen glowed with soft yellow light. I had strung garland over the window frames that morning. Little white lights blinked between the pine branches. Outside, snow drifted past the glass. Manhattan looked like a postcard.

I wiped my hands on my apron and walked to the dining room. The table was set with my grandmother's china. The plates had tiny painted roses around the edges. I straightened a fork. Adjusted a wine glass. Everything had to be perfect.

Westin loved osso buco. He told me that the first time I made it for him, back when we were dating. He said it reminded him of his mother's cooking. He kissed my forehead and said I was the only person who ever made him feel like he had a real home.

I smiled at the memory and touched the edge of one of the plates. This was our third Christmas together as husband and wife. Our first two had been magical. Last year, Westin surprised me with a weekend trip to Vermont. We stayed in a cabin with a fireplace. He read to me at night while I curled up against his chest.

This year, I wanted to surprise him. He had been working so hard lately. Long hours at the office. Business calls that stretched past midnight. He looked tired. Stressed. I wanted to remind him that he could relax here. That this was his home too.

I went back to the kitchen and stirred the osso buco. The meat fell off the bone. Perfect. I tasted the sauce. Added a pinch of salt. Tasted again. My grandfather taught me to cook. He said food was like art. You had to pay attention to every detail.

Grandfather.

I felt the familiar ache in my chest. He had died eight months ago. Westin held me through every night of that first terrible week. He didn't say much. He just held me. Let me cry into his shirt until I fell asleep. He took care of everything. The funeral. The estate paperwork. He said I shouldn't have to think about any of it.

I blinked and focused on the stove. Grandfather would have loved tonight. He always said Christmas Eve was about family. About the people you loved most.

The front door opened. I heard Westin's footsteps in the hall. Heavy. Slow.

"I'm in the kitchen!" I called out. I turned off the stove and wiped my hands again. My heart did a little jump. I always felt that way when he came home. Like I was still that college girl who couldn't believe someone like him wanted to be with me.

He appeared in the doorway. Still in his coat. His face was blank. He didn't smile.

"Hey," I said. I walked toward him. "You're late. I was starting to worry. Dinner's ready. I made your favorite—"

"We need to talk."

I stopped. His voice was flat. Cold. I had never heard him sound like that before.

"Okay," I said slowly. "Is everything all right?"

He walked past me into the dining room. He looked at the table. At the china. At the candles I had lit. He didn't say anything.

I followed him. My stomach felt tight. "Westin? What's going on?"

He turned to face me. His eyes were hard. Like he was looking at a stranger.

"I sold the painting," he said.

I blinked. "What painting?"

"*The Garden at Twilight*. Your family's Sargent. I sold it three weeks ago."

The room tilted. I grabbed the back of a chair. "You... what?"

"I also transferred the estate accounts into my name. The brownstone. The investment portfolio. All of it. It's mine now."

I couldn't breathe. The words didn't make sense. They were English. I understood each one individually. But together they were nonsense.

"I don't understand," I whispered. "Why would you—"

His phone rang. He pulled it out of his pocket and looked at the screen. Then he smiled. It was not the smile I knew. It was something else. Something sharp.

He answered and put it on speaker.

"Hey baby," a woman's voice purred. Zara. I knew that voice. She was Westin's assistant. She had come to our house for dinner once. She wore too much perfume and laughed too loud at Westin's jokes.

"Hey," Westin said. He was still looking at me. Still smiling.

"Did you tell her yet?" Zara asked.

"Just now."

"Oh my God. What's her face like?"

Westin tilted his head. Studied me. "Priceless."

They both laughed.

I felt my wine glass slip from my hand. It hit the floor. Shattered. Red wine spread across the hardwood like blood.

I stood there. Frozen. The Christmas music still played in the kitchen. Bing Crosby sang about dreaming of a white Christmas.

"Merry Christmas, little heiress," Zara said through the phone. Then she hung up.

Westin put his phone away. "Security will be here in ten minutes to escort you out. I suggest you don't make a scene."

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

Footsteps sounded in the hall. Two men in dark suits appeared. I had never seen them before.

"Mrs. Powell," one of them said. Not Mrs. Cruz. Powell. Westin's name. "Please come with us."

I looked at Westin. My husband. The man I loved. The man who read to me in Vermont. Who held me when my grandfather died.

He looked back at me with nothing in his eyes.

Uncle Marco appeared in the hallway. He was holding a suitcase. My suitcase. He set it down by the door and turned away. He wouldn't look at me.

"Marco?" I said. My voice cracked. "What's happening?"

He said nothing. He walked into the living room and disappeared.

The security men took my arms. Gently. Firmly. They walked me to the front door. Someone draped my coat over my shoulders. Someone else handed me my purse.

The door opened. Cold air hit my face.

They walked me down the front steps. Set the suitcase beside me on the sidewalk. Then they went back inside.

I stood there. Snow fell on my hair. On my coat. The brownstone glowed with warm light behind me. Through the window, I could see the dining room. The table I had set. The candles still burning.

A car pulled up. A town car. The back door opened.

Zara Dixon stepped out. She wore a fur coat. Real fur. Cream-colored. Expensive. She saw me and stopped. Her red lips curved into a smile.

She walked past me. Slowly. She paused on the bottom step and leaned close.

"Merry Christmas, sweetheart," she whispered. "I'll take good care of your house."

Then she walked up the steps. The door opened for her. She stepped inside. Into my home. Into my life.

The door closed.

I stood on the sidewalk. Alone. Christmas Eve in Manhattan. The snow kept falling.

I looked down at the suitcase. My hands were shaking. I knelt and unzipped it. A few clothes. Some toiletries. And tucked into the lining—an envelope.

I pulled it out. Heavy paper. A red wax seal. The Cruz family crest pressed into the wax.

My grandfather's handwriting on the front: *For Isabela. Open when the wolf shows his teeth.*

I held the envelope against my chest. I didn't open it. Not yet. I couldn't.

I stood up. Picked up the suitcase. Started walking.

The city blurred around me. Lights. People. Cars. I walked until I found a hotel. Small. Cheap. Near Penn Station.

I paid cash. The clerk didn't ask questions.

I rode the elevator to the third floor. Found my room. Went inside.

I sat on the bed. Still in my coat. The envelope on the pillow beside me.

I stared at it. At the wax seal. At my grandfather's handwriting.

Outside, the city kept moving. Inside, I sat perfectly still.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I just sat there until the shaking stopped.

Then I reached for the envelope.
