Chapter 1 of My Husband Moved His Mistress Into Our Penthouse

The intercom buzzed at 11:47 PM. I know because I was still awake, still dressed, sitting on the edge of my bed like I'd been waiting for it — because I had.

"Hailey." Lucien's voice through the speaker was flat, already bored with me before I'd said a word. "Room's a mess. Come deal with it."

He didn't say please. He never did. Seven years ago he used to call me *sweetheart* like it meant something. Now the word was just something he handed to other women, the way he'd hand me his dry cleaning.

I walked down the hall to the master bedroom — our bedroom, technically, though I hadn't slept there in over a year — and opened the door without knocking, because knocking would have meant I thought I had the right to be surprised by what I'd find.

The sheets were a wreck, half off the mattress. The lamp was overturned but somehow not broken. And Poppy Jimenez was sitting up against the headboard wrapped in my silk robe — the pale blue one with the embroidered cranes, a birthday gift from my father the year before he died — her dark hair mussed, her mouth curled into something between a smile and a dare.

"Oh good, you're here," she said, stretching like a cat that had just been fed. "We made kind of a mess. Lucien gets so — " she pressed two fingers to her lips, giggling " — *enthusiastic*."

I didn't answer. I crossed to the bed and started stripping the sheets, folding the corners the way I always did, methodical, unhurried.

"He picked me up like I weighed nothing," Poppy went on, watching my hands instead of my face, which told me exactly what she was hunting for. "Right against the wall there. You should try it sometime. Oh wait." She laughed, a bright little sound with a blade hidden inside it. "Right. You don't get that anymore, do you, sweetie?"

Lucien stood by the window doing up his cufflinks, checking his reflection in the dark glass the way he always did — like the world existed to confirm he was still magnificent. He caught my eye in that reflection and I watched something in his face sharpen, hungry for a reaction I wasn't giving him.

"Nothing to say?" he asked.

"No." I kept folding.

He crossed the room, pulled his wallet from the nightstand, and flicked his black Amex onto the carpet at my feet. It landed face-up, his name embossed and gleaming under the lamp light.

"Buy yourself some dignity," he said. "God knows you need it."

Behind him, Poppy laughed into her hand, delighted, like he'd said something clever.

I bent, picked up the card, set it on the dresser without a word, and reached for the last pillowcase.

That was the wrong thing to do. Or the right thing, depending on whose war I was fighting.

His hand caught me across the face before I even saw it move — a flat, hard crack that snapped my head sideways and lit my whole cheek on fire. The pillowcase fell out of my hands. For one second the room tilted, white at the edges, and I heard Poppy's sharp intake of breath, delighted and horrified in equal measure.

"There," Lucien said, quiet now, satisfied, straightening his cuffs again like he'd just finished a piece of business. "Now she remembers her place."

My eyes watered — reflex, not grief, I told myself, standing there with my palm pressed lightly to my jaw. I made myself breathe. I made myself think of the number on my phone, the one I hadn't checked yet tonight, the transfer that should have cleared hours ago.

"Is there anything else you need?" My voice came out level. Almost gentle. It cost me more than the slap did.

Lucien blinked, thrown for half a second by how little he'd gotten. Poppy's smile faltered at the edges, uncertain now, like she'd expected tears and gotten a locked door instead.

I picked the sheets up off the floor, gathered them against my chest, and walked out. I closed the door softly behind me. Softly. That mattered more than anything else I did in that room.

In the hallway, alone, I stopped by the linen closet and let myself lean against the wall for exactly four seconds. Then I pulled out my phone.

The banking app was already open from earlier. A new notification sat at the top: **$4,200,000 — Meridian Holdings LLC — Transfer Complete.**

Another subsidiary, gone from his hands into mine, and he still thought the only thing he'd taken from me tonight was my face.

I dropped the sheets in the hamper outside my room, went in, and watered the small magnolia cutting on my windowsill — three careful measures from a glass I keep just for this. It was the only living thing in this penthouse that was mine and only mine, grown from a branch of the tree in my mother's courtyard.

Later, at my vanity, I opened the jewelry box with the false bottom — hers, my mother's, before it was mine — and took out the ledger. My handwriting filled another line, small and exact: *Meridian Holdings, $4.2M, cleared.*

My wedding ring caught the lamp light as I wrote. I never take it off. Not for sentiment. Because a woman who still wears her chains is a woman no one bothers to watch.
