Chapter 1 of My Husband Let Our Baby Die

I'm standing at the top of the stairs when my foot slips.

One moment I'm reaching for the banister, the next I'm weightless. The marble is cold and unforgiving. I hit the third step with my shoulder, then the fifth with my hip. My hands fly to my belly — seven months round, precious, impossible to protect — and I'm trying to curl around it, trying to make myself small, but gravity doesn't care.

I land at the bottom in a heap.

The pain comes in waves. Sharp, then spreading, then sharp again. I can feel wetness between my legs. Warm. Wrong.

"Darren!" My voice cracks. "Darren, help!"

I hear the studio door open. Fifteen feet away. I twist my head and see him standing there, backlit by the afternoon sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows. He's holding a paintbrush. There's a smear of cadmium yellow on his wrist.

He looks at me.

I'm crumpled on the floor, one hand pressed to my stomach, the other reaching toward him. Blood is pooling beneath me, dark against the white marble. I can see it spreading.

"Darren, please. The baby—"

He stands there for three seconds. Four. Five.

Then he says, in a voice as flat as a closed door: "Be more careful next time."

He turns. He walks back into the studio. The door clicks shut.

I lie there, staring at the place where he stood, and I don't understand. My brain keeps trying to rewrite what just happened, keeps insisting I misheard, keeps searching for the version of this moment where my husband comes running, calls 911, kneels beside me, does anything.

But the door stays closed.

The wetness keeps spreading.

I pull my phone from my pocket with shaking hands and call the ambulance myself.

I lose the baby that night.

They call it a placental abruption. They use words like "trauma" and "hemorrhage" and "nonviable." A nurse with kind eyes holds my hand while they take her away. I never got to see her. I never got to say I'm sorry.

Darren doesn't come to the hospital.

He sends a text at 11:47 p.m.: *The housekeeper will pick you up.*

I stare at the screen until the words blur. Then I turn the phone face-down on the bedside table and press my hands to the hollow where my daughter used to be.

Something inside me that has been bending for years — through his silences, his coldness, the way he looks past me like I'm furniture — finally snaps. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just the quiet, structural finality of a bone broken past repair.

I lie in the recovery ward alone and realize I have been alone for a very long time.

When Darren presents the divorce papers for the third time, I pick up the pen.

We're in his attorney's office in Midtown. Floor-to-ceiling windows. View of Central Park. Everything is glass and steel and expensive.

Darren sits across from me in a charcoal suit, looking like he's reviewing a contract for gallery space. His face is calm. Unreadable. The way it always is.

"Sign here," he says. "And here."

I don't argue this time. I don't beg. I don't ask him if he's sure.

I flip through the pages until I find the clause I need. Medical expenses. Life support. Mount Sinai Hospital.

"This stays," I say quietly. "The payments for my mother. You keep covering them."

Darren glances at his attorney, who nods.

"Fine," Darren says.

That's it. Fine.

I sign every page. My hand is steady. I don't cry.

The divorce is finalized with the cold efficiency of a business transaction. No alimony. No property. No fight.

I walk out of the attorney's office alone, and the June sun is too bright, and the city is too loud, and I realize I have no idea where to go.

In the weeks after, Zayla makes her presence undeniable.

She's always there now. At the penthouse. At Judah's school events. In photographs leaving Darren's loft in the mornings, coffee cup in hand, looking like she belongs.

She's twenty-six. Willowy. She wears vintage band T-shirts and has this way of tilting her head when Darren talks, like every word he says is profound.

Judah loves her.

I see it during my custody visits. The way he lights up when she walks in. The way he shows her his drawings first, before he shows me.

One evening, I bring him his favorite dinner — mac and cheese with breadcrumbs on top, the way I've made it since he was three. He looks at the container and wrinkles his nose.

"Zayla makes it better," he says.

I set the container on the counter. "Okay."

"She puts bacon in it."

"That sounds good."

He's quiet for a moment. Then he looks up at me with his father's eyes and says, with the devastating honesty of a child who doesn't understand what words can do: "Zayla is my real mom. I don't need you."

The air goes out of the room.

I stand there, frozen, while my seven-year-old son picks up his iPad and walks away.

I drive home in silence. I park in my building's garage and sit in the car for two hours without moving.

When I finally go upstairs, I don't turn on the lights.

I just sit in the dark and wonder how much more a person can lose before there's nothing left to take.
