My Husband Left Me in the Avalanche for His Mistress Summary

After seven years of marriage, Rowan finally wore me down. Three invitations. Three chances to refuse. But I packed my gear anyway, ignoring my doctor's warnings and the steel in my spine from a childhood accident. He called it his last great ride, so I said yes—love meant showing up, even when it cost me. Now I'm buried in a Colorado avalanche, and Rowan isn't digging. He's running with his mistress. Survival is mine alone, and so is the reckoning that follows.

Chapter 1 of My Husband Left Me in the Avalanche for His Mistress

Rowan asked me three times before I said yes.

The first time was over breakfast, his eyes bright with that restless energy he always got when a season was ending. The second was in bed, his hand tracing lazy circles on my shoulder while he talked about legacy and closure and one final perfect run. The third time, he didn't ask at all—he just looked at me with that expression I'd learned to recognize over seven years of marriage, the one that said he'd already decided I would come, and we were just waiting for me to catch up.

So I said yes.

I said yes even though my doctor had been clear: no high-impact activity, no extreme cold, nothing that would stress the hardware holding my lower spine together after the accident when I was nine. I said yes even though the last time I'd gone backcountry skiing, I'd spent three days afterward unable to get out of bed without Rowan's help. I said yes because he called it his "last great ride," and because I'd spent our entire marriage learning that love meant showing up even when it cost you something.

Especially when it cost you something.

I packed my gear the night before we left for Colorado. Rowan was in the living room on a video call with his training group, his voice carrying through the apartment with that easy authority he used when he was in his element. I heard Waverly's laugh—bright and young and uncomplicated—and pressed my thumb hard into my lower back where the pain had already started building.

Biscuit sat at my feet, head tilted, watching me fold thermal layers with the kind of patient concern only dogs and very old friends can manage.

"I'm fine," I told him quietly.

He didn't look convinced.

The Rockies in March were exactly as beautiful and unforgiving as I remembered. Our group met at the base lodge before dawn: Rowan and me, Waverly Fox and two other skiers from his training program, and a guide named Tim who had the weathered face of someone who'd seen enough avalanches to respect them. The forecast was clear. The snowpack was stable. Every technical box was checked.

Rowan kissed my temple before we started the ascent. "You good?"

"I'm good," I said.

I wasn't.

By the time we reached the ridge, my spine was screaming. Each step sent white-hot threads of pain through my lower back and down my left leg. I kept my face neutral and my breathing steady and told myself it would be better once we started the descent, once I could glide instead of climb, once the weight came off my hips.

Rowan was already at the edge, scanning the slope with Tim, mapping the run. Waverly stood beside him in matching gear—the same neon-blue jacket he'd posted on Instagram last week with the caption "Ready for anything." She said something I couldn't hear, and Rowan laughed.

I pressed my thumb into my back and looked away.

The descent started clean. Rowan went first, carving perfect lines through virgin powder, his form textbook even after all these years. Waverly followed, then the others. I went last, taking it slow, every mogul a small detonation in my spine.

I was halfway down when the mountain moved.

It didn't sound like thunder. It sounded like the world breaking open—a deep, tectonic roar that swallowed every other noise. I looked up and saw the white wall coming, impossibly fast, impossibly wide, and there was no time to think, no time to move, just enough time to understand that this was happening and I couldn't stop it.

The avalanche hit like a freight train made of ice.

I went under.

The weight was immediate and absolute—crushing pressure on my chest, my legs, my already-damaged back. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't move. Couldn't tell which way was up. The cold was so intense it felt like burning. I tried to scream and snow filled my mouth.

Then everything went silent and dark and impossibly heavy.

I don't know how long I was under before I heard voices. Muffled. Distant. I tried to move my arm and couldn't. Tried to call out and managed only a thin, airless sound that went nowhere.

Then I heard him.

Rowan's voice, sharp with panic, shouting coordinates. The scrape of a shovel. Movement above me. I felt a surge of relief so intense it was almost painful—he was coming, he was digging, he would get me out.

"—got the rope!" That was Tim's voice, closer now.

"Where's Waverly?" Rowan, breathless.

"Fifty yards down—she's pinned but conscious—"

"Lillian?"

"Here—she's here, I can see her jacket—"

A pause. Just seconds. Maybe less.

Then Rowan's voice again, flat and final: "Give me the rope."

Another pause.

"Rowan, your wife—"

"Nationals are in three weeks." His voice was steady now. Decided. "I can't let her lose everything."

Footsteps moving away.

Moving away from me.

I tried to scream. Nothing came out but snow and silence and cold.
