Chapter 1 of My Husband Killed My Father to Marry My Cousin

Kennedi found me on the couch around nine. The city lights blinked outside our penthouse windows. Derrick was in the shower. I was reading a contract and turning my father's old signet ring around my finger.

"Claire! Look!" She dropped down beside me, phone in hand. My cousin had moved in with us two months ago, right after graduation. She smelled like my perfume. Again.

"Who is it?"

"My mystery guy. The one Derrick found for me online." She giggled and pushed the screen at me. "He just sent this. Tell me he's not gorgeous."

It was a gym selfie. No face. Just a mirror, a bare chest, and hard abs.

I laughed. "Kennedi, he's showing off."

"So? Say he's hot."

I looked again to tease her. Then I saw it.

A small brown birthmark, shaped like a teardrop, curving along the line of his hip.

My laugh died in my throat.

I knew that mark. I had traced it with my fingertips for seven years. On my husband.

"Right?" Kennedi said. "He's perfect."

"He's perfect," I repeated. My voice sounded normal. I didn't know how. I handed the phone back. "I need the bathroom."

I locked the door and gripped the sink. The marble was cold. The woman in the mirror looked calm, but her lips were pale. I breathed in. Out. In again. I waited until my hands stopped shaking.

Lots of men have birthmarks, I told myself.

I didn't believe it.

Derrick fell asleep at midnight, one arm thrown over his pillow. Kennedi's door had been shut for an hour.

I took the spare key from the bottom of my old jewelry box. Derrick didn't know I had it. Dad told me once, "Always keep a key to every lock in your house." I had laughed at him then.

The office smelled like his scotch. I knelt by the desk. The second drawer stuck. I pulled harder. Under a stack of folders, the bottom lifted. Beneath it was a black phone I had never seen.

No passcode. He was that sure of himself.

The messages went back eight months. Photos. Voice notes. Hotel names and times. Words he had never once said to me.

I scrolled to the very first message. My chest went tight.

It wasn't from him. It was from her.

*Hi, cousin-in-law. Don't worry. Claire will never know it's me.*

She knew. From the first night, she knew.

I took screenshots of every thread and uploaded them to an encrypted drive. Then I put the phone back exactly as it had been. Folders squared. Drawer shut.

I didn't cry. I walked to the kitchen and poured a glass of water. The fridge hummed. Far below, a siren wailed.

I drank slowly. And I started to think.

At breakfast, Derrick buttered his toast and checked his hair in the back of a spoon.

"Big dinner in the Hamptons tonight, sweetheart. Client stuff. I'll stay over."

"Of course," I said.

At noon, Kennedi bounced into the kitchen. "I'm visiting a college friend on Long Island! Back tomorrow."

Same afternoon. Same direction. Same night.

I kissed Derrick's cheek at the door. I waved Kennedi into the elevator. "Have fun."

The doors closed. I opened my laptop.

It took twenty minutes to find it in his calendar. A private masquerade gala at a Southampton estate. I called Vivian Hale, an old friend from my debutante days. One favor, and I had an invitation.

I chose a deep green gown Derrick had never seen. And a black lace mask that covered everything above my lips.

The estate glowed like a jewelry box. Violins played. Champagne glasses caught the light.

I moved through the crowd, searching faces I couldn't see. Then I stepped into the garden. Past the stone hedges, under low lanterns, there was a small alcove.

They were there.

Masks pushed up. Derrick's hand gripped her waist. Her fingers curled in his lapel. He kissed her slowly, like he owned her.

I slipped behind a stone pillar.

"I'll make the photos next week," Kennedi whispered. "Fake texts. Hotel receipts. Everyone will think she's the cheater."

Derrick laughed low. "Then I file. She walks out with nothing."

"I'm repainting the master bedroom first thing. I hate her beige."

"New ring by spring, baby. Bigger than hers."

My nails dug into the stone. Something warm ran down my fingertips. Blood. I didn't care.

I stepped forward.

A hand closed around my wrist and pulled me back into the dark.

I spun. A tall man in a midnight-navy suit. No mask. He smelled like cedar and tobacco. I knew that face from magazine covers and Derrick's angry rants. Kai Vargas. CEO of Vargas Capital. My husband's worst rival.

"Not here," he murmured. "Not like this. You blow your cover now, you lose everything."

I tried to pull free. He didn't let go. "Why are you here?"

His jaw tightened. "I've been watching Derrick for years. And I have something to tell you. It changes everything."

He led me deeper into the garden, where the music faded to a hum. He stopped by a dark, still fountain.

"Your father's crash wasn't an accident, Claire."

The ground tilted.

"Derrick paid someone to tamper with his brakes. Your father caught him with his secretary, Dahlia Silva. He found the stolen money. He was going to tell you."

My knees gave out.

Kai caught me. His arms were steady and warm. For one breath, I let him hold me up.

Then I pulled away. My eyes were dry. My jaw was locked.

"Can you prove it?"
