Chapter 1 of My Husband Ignored My Cancer for My Sister

The examination room at Seattle Presbyterian smelled like antiseptic and something else I couldn't name. Fear, maybe. Or just the accumulated weight of bad news delivered in beige rooms with motivational posters on the walls.

Dr. Guzman sat across from me with my file open. He had kind eyes. That should have warned me.

"Stage two uterine cancer," he said. Not unkindly. Just clearly. "The tumor is localized but growing. We caught it early enough that a radical hysterectomy offers a seventy percent survival rate. We'd want to schedule surgery within the next three weeks."

I heard myself asking the right questions. What does radical mean. What's the recovery timeline. What happens if I wait. My voice sounded normal. Steady. Like I was asking about mortgage rates or vacation days.

He answered everything. I wrote nothing down. I knew I'd remember every word.

When he finished, I picked up my phone. My hands were steady. I called Everett.

Voicemail.

I stared at the screen. Tried again.

Voicemail.

Third time. Same.

Dr. Guzman was watching me with that careful expression doctors get when they're trying not to notice you're falling apart. "Is there someone else I can call for you? A friend, a family member?"

"No," I said. "Thank you. I'm fine."

I wasn't fine.

I took the brochures the social worker pressed into my hands on the way out. Support groups. Financial assistance. Divorce resources—she'd slipped that one in without comment, like she knew something I didn't. Maybe she did.

In the parking garage, I sat in my car and opened Everett's calendar. The one he'd shared with me two years ago. "Total transparency," he'd said, kissing my forehead. "That's what marriage means."

There it was. 2:15 PM. SEA—Arrivals, Terminal B. Lillian's flight.

He'd called in sick to work. Told me he had a meeting he couldn't move. Driven to the airport to pick up my sister.

I sat there for forty-seven minutes. I know because I watched the clock on the dashboard. Watched the numbers change. Watched other people get into their cars and drive away to lives that still made sense.

The brochures crumpled slowly in my fist.

I started thinking about things I hadn't let myself think about before. The way Everett always touched my hair when it was down, loose around my shoulders. The way Lillian used to wear hers. The perfume he bought me for our first anniversary—Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt. Lillian's signature scent. I'd been so happy he'd noticed what I liked.

Except I'd never worn it before he gave it to me.

The wrap dresses. The honey-blonde highlights he'd suggested, so gently, at the salon. "It would look beautiful on you." And it did. It looked exactly like Lillian.

I drove home. Parked. Walked inside. Stood in front of the bathroom mirror.

I looked at myself for a long time.

Then I opened the drawer and found the kitchen scissors.

The first cut felt like waking up. The hair fell in long blonde sections into the sink. I kept cutting. Shorter. Shorter. Until the woman in the mirror looked like someone I didn't know. Someone Everett wouldn't recognize.

Someone who wasn't my sister.

I threw the perfume bottles in the trash. All of them. The Jo Malone. The Chanel he'd bought for my birthday—Lillian had worn Chanel in college. The Dior. Gone.

I pulled every wrap dress out of the closet. Stuffed them into garbage bags. Fifteen dresses. I'd thought I just liked the style. I'd thought it was my taste developing. Growing up. Becoming elegant.

I'd thought he loved me.

I remembered the night two months ago when he'd been half-asleep, his face pressed into my hair, and he'd murmured something soft. I hadn't caught it. Hadn't asked him to repeat it.

Now I knew what he'd said.

Lillian.

I sat on the bathroom floor surrounded by hair and garbage bags and broken glass from a perfume bottle I'd thrown too hard. The tile was cold. I didn't move.

Everett came home at eleven. I heard his keys in the door. His footsteps in the hall. He paused when he saw me at the kitchen table.

"Lea?" His voice was careful. Confused. "Your hair—"

"Long day," I said.

He looked at me like he was trying to solve a puzzle. Like I was a stranger wearing his wife's face. He glanced toward the bathroom. Saw the garbage bags in the hall.

"Are you okay?"

"Fine," I said. "Just felt like a change."

He stood there for a long moment. Something moved behind his eyes. Something uncertain. For the first time in three years, Everett looked at me and didn't know what to say.

"I'm going to bed," he said finally.

He went.

I stayed at the table until two in the morning. I didn't write anything. Didn't plan anything. Just sat there in the kitchen of the apartment we'd chosen together, wearing the face I'd been born with instead of the one he'd built, and felt the architecture of my marriage collapse in slow motion.

By morning, I knew what I was going to do.

I was going to stop being her.
