Chapter 1 of My Husband Gave My Research to His Mistress

The Hoffman Biomedical Research Institute occupied the top twelve floors of a glass tower in Midtown Manhattan. I'd walked through the revolving doors every morning for five years. Today, the marble lobby felt colder than usual.

I took the elevator to the ninth floor. Project registry was tucked at the end of a quiet corridor, past rows of frosted glass offices. I pushed open the door.

The clerk behind the counter looked up. Her smile flickered when she saw me.

"Dr. Greene," she said. "What can I help you with?"

"I'm here to check the final submission for the Whitfield Innovation Award," I said. "My nomination closes next week."

She blinked. "Your nomination?"

"Yes. The therapeutic compound stabilization project. I filed the preliminary paperwork three years ago."

She turned to her computer. Her fingers moved across the keyboard. Then stopped.

"I'm sorry," she said slowly. "That project is listed under Dr. Laylani Marshall."

The air left my lungs.

"That's a mistake," I said. "It's my research. I developed every protocol. I ran every trial."

She pulled a file from the cabinet behind her. Slid it across the counter.

I opened it.

My datasets. My methodology frameworks. My three years of work, formatted and compiled exactly as I'd prepared them. But at the top of every page, where my name should have been, was Laylani's signature. Beneath it, a formal transfer authorization on Hoffman Biomedical letterhead. Signed by Bennett Hoffman. CEO.

My hands didn't shake. They were completely still.

"There must be some error," I said.

The clerk's eyes dropped. "The transfer was processed two weeks ago. Direct orders from Mr. Hoffman's office."

I closed the file. Set it on the counter. Walked out.

---

Bennett's office was on the top floor. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park. Minimalist furniture. Everything white and chrome.

His assistant waved me through without asking.

Bennett sat behind his desk, phone in hand, scrolling. He didn't look up when I entered.

"I need to talk to you," I said.

"Make it quick," he said. "I have a meeting in ten."

I stood in front of his desk. "You transferred my Whitfield nomination to Laylani."

He set his phone down. Leaned back in his chair. "Yes."

"Why?"

"She needs the visibility more than you do," he said. His tone was flat. Clinical. "You've been here five years. You're established. Laylani's still building her reputation."

"That's my research," I said. My voice cracked. I hated the sound of it. "Three years of my life."

"And it's excellent work," Bennett said. "Which is why it deserves the best possible platform. Laylani has the presentation skills to maximize its impact. You know that."

I stared at him. "You're serious."

"Autumn." He sighed. Checked his watch. "Think about the bigger picture. The Institute benefits. The Hoffman name benefits. That helps all of us."

"It helps Laylani," I said.

His jaw tightened. "Don't make this about jealousy."

"It's not jealousy. It's theft."

Bennett stood. Buttoned his suit jacket. "Holly's quarterly medical bill is due next week. Two hundred and forty thousand dollars. I suggest you focus on gratitude instead of dramatics."

The words hit like a slap.

He walked past me toward the door. Paused. "I'm taking Laylani to the Whitmore Foundation gala tonight. She's receiving a humanitarian award. You're welcome to come, but I'd prefer you didn't make a scene."

Then he was gone.

I stood alone in his office. The city stretched out beyond the glass. Endless. Indifferent.

---

That night, I sat in the penthouse. Bennett didn't come home until after midnight.

I heard the door open. His footsteps in the hallway. He walked into the living room, loosening his tie.

"We need to talk," I said.

He glanced at me. Kept walking toward the bedroom. "It's late, Autumn."

"I want a divorce."

He stopped. Turned. Looked at me for the first time in hours.

Then he laughed. A short exhale through his nose.

"You're upset about the nomination," he said. "I get it. But don't be ridiculous."

"I'm not being ridiculous," I said. "I'm done."

He crossed his arms. "Done."

"Yes."

Bennett tilted his head. Studied me like I was a data point that didn't fit his model.

"Holly's life support costs twenty thousand dollars a week," he said quietly. "The Hoffman Medical Fund covers it in full. If you file for divorce, that funding stops within seventy-two hours."

My chest tightened.

"You're saying I have to stay married to you to keep my sister alive," I said.

"I'm saying actions have consequences," Bennett said. "Think carefully before you make threats you can't follow through on."

He walked into the bedroom. Closed the door.

I sat in the dark. Looked down at my left hand. The silver wedding band I'd worn for five years had left a permanent indentation in my skin. Even without the ring, the mark remained.

---

The next morning, I arrived at the Institute at seven. Swiped my keycard at the entrance.

The light flashed red.

I tried again. Red.

Security walked over. A young guy I'd seen a hundred times.

"Dr. Greene," he said. "Your access has been revoked."

"Revoked?"

"As of this morning. I'm sorry. You'll need to speak to administration."

I walked to the ninth floor. Took the stairs because I didn't trust myself in the elevator.

The department head's office door was open. Dr. Raymond Leitz sat behind his desk, sorting files. He looked up when I knocked.

"Autumn," he said. He didn't smile.

"My keycard was deactivated," I said.

"Yes." He folded his hands. "There's been a restructuring. Your lab assignment has been reallocated."

"Reallocated."

"To Dr. Marshall's team."

I felt something crack inside my chest. "On whose authority?"

He didn't answer.

"Bennett," I said.

Dr. Leitz looked away. "The decisions come from the top. I'm sorry."

I walked out. Down the hall. Stopped outside the laboratory that had been mine for five years. Through the glass, I saw Laylani inside, laughing with her team. My files were open on her workstation. My protocols pinned to the board.

I stood there. Badge in hand. Name erased from the directory beside the door.

Bennett had already answered my divorce ultimatum.

He'd erased me.
