Chapter 1 of My Husband Forged My Name to Pay His Mistress

The air conditioner in our Brooklyn apartment died in early July. Julius said we would split the repair bill, fifty-fifty. Then he never called anyone.

So on the night Gracelynn got sick, the whole place felt like the inside of a closed mouth. Hot. Wet. Still.

I was rinsing dishes when I heard the thud.

I found her on the bathroom floor. My seven-year-old daughter, my whole world, was shaking so hard her heels drummed the tile. Her old plush rabbit lay by the tub, one ear soaked. I pressed my hand to her forehead and pulled it back like I'd touched a stove.

The thermometer read 104.

"Julius!" My voice cracked in half. "Julius, she's seizing!"

I carried her down the hall. She weighed nothing. Her breath came in short, wet clicks against my neck.

Julius sat on the couch in the blue glow of the TV. Glossy brochures were fanned across his lap. *Whitmore Academy. Where Leaders Begin.* Emery's future school. Fifteen thousand just to hold a seat.

He didn't look up.

"I need the car," I said. "Now."

He turned a page. "Take it."

I was already moving toward the keys.

"After you send me one-fifty for gas."

I stopped. "What?"

He finally raised his eyes. He cleared his throat and straightened the cuff of his sleeve, like he was about to run a meeting. "It's my car, Audrey. My fuel. We agreed on fifty-fifty. I'm not being difficult. I'm being fair."

"She's burning up."

"Then you'd better hurry." He glanced at his watch. The gold one. The one I never asked about.

Gracelynn whimpered. Her small fingers twisted in my shirt.

I didn't scream. I didn't beg. I held my daughter against my chest, opened my banking app with one shaking thumb, and sent him one hundred and fifty dollars.

His phone chimed. He nodded once and went back to his brochure.

I drove to the ER alone, running two red lights, watching her chest rise and fall in the mirror.

---

The waiting room at Methodist had that flat, humming light that makes everyone look sick.

They had Gracelynn on an IV by two in the morning. A tube ran into the crook of her tiny arm. Her lips were cracked. She slept with the rabbit tucked under her chin, and every few minutes her eyelids twitched like she was still listening for voices in a kitchen.

I sat in the plastic chair beside her bed and opened my phone.

I have kept a ledger for three years. Color-coded. Green for groceries. Blue for utilities. Orange for Emery: his snacks, his co-pays, his swim lessons, the shoes he outgrew every four months. I tracked it all down to the sales tax. I told myself it was just organization. I told myself it was how a good wife kept the peace.

That night I created a new tab.

I typed the name slowly. *What He Owes Me.*

First entry: *July 14. Gas to ER. $150.00.*

I stared at the number. My thumb found my mother's silver band and turned it, around and around. My mother died owing a hospital money she never had. I promised myself, a long time ago, my child would never be a line on someone else's bill.

Something inside me went quiet. Not broken. Just quiet. Like a door closing in another room.

This was the last time I would pay without a plan.

---

They discharged her two days later. Julius never came. He texted once: *Update?*

On the drive home, Gracelynn sat very still in the back seat. She lined up the crayons from the hospital gift bag on her knee. Red, yellow, blue. Perfect rows.

"Mommy?"

"Yeah, baby?"

She waited a long beat. She always waits. She checks my face first, like she's making sure the question is allowed.

"Was Daddy worried about me?"

My hands tightened on the wheel until my knuckles went pale. I looked at her in the rearview mirror. Her face was the color of milk.

"Mommy was worried enough for both of us," I said.

She nodded, like that was an answer she already knew.

That evening, after she fell asleep, I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop. Down the hall, Julius was on the phone, laughing low about something. I didn't ask who.

I typed: *Manhattan homes. Top-rated public school districts.*

The listings filled the screen, one after another.

---

I found Nathaniel Cross three weeks later.

His firm sat on the twenty-second floor of a glass tower in Midtown. The website said they handled *financial exploitation within marriage.* I read that line six times before I called.

He was older than I expected. Gray at the temples. Calm hands. He didn't smile when I sat down, and I liked him for that.

"Most people come in angry," he said. "What did you bring?"

I slid my laptop across the desk. Three years. Every tab, every color.

He scrolled. Then he scrolled slower. Then he leaned forward and stopped talking altogether.

The air conditioner hummed. Somewhere below us, a siren wound through the street.

Finally he looked up. "Mrs. Peters, I've done this for nineteen years. This is one of the most meticulous packages I've ever seen."

"Russell," I said. "Audrey Russell."

He studied me for a second. Then he nodded.

"Ms. Russell." He tapped the screen, where the orange columns ran on and on. "You've accounted for every dollar you spent. But do you know where every dollar *he* spent went?"

I turned my mother's ring once.

"No," I said. "Not yet."
