Chapter 1 of My Husband Erased Our Marriage,So I Found a Better One

The garlic sizzled in the pan, filling the kitchen with a warm, familiar scent. I stirred the pasta sauce, humming softly. Six years of marriage to Bill, the CEO of his family’s sprawling enterprise, meant our evenings together were rare. Tonight, he was actually home on time.

The front door opened. Footsteps echoed in the hall.

"Mommy!"

Jason, my five-year-old son, bolted into the kitchen and wrapped his arms around my legs. I smiled, turning the stove down to a simmer, and ruffled his hair.

Bill walked in right behind him. He didn't smile. He loosened his tie and leaned against the doorframe, his expression unreadable.

"Dinner smells great," Bill said, though his tone held no warmth.

"It’ll be ready in ten minutes," I told him, reaching for a towel to wipe my hands.

"Don't rush. I need to tell you something." He crossed his arms. "Tomorrow, Jason and I are leaving for a few days. We'll be back in three."

I froze, the towel still bunched in my fingers. "A trip? You didn't mention this. Should I start packing our bags now?"

"No." He looked straight at me. "You aren't coming. You're staying here."

The kitchen suddenly felt suffocatingly quiet.

"Why?" I asked, my voice dropping. "Did something happen with the company?"

Jason tugged on my apron strings. He looked up, his big brown eyes bright and entirely innocent.

"Dad is taking me and Ms. Annie on a trip, Mommy!"

The words slammed into my chest.

"Ms. Annie?" I repeated, staring at my son.

"Yeah! Dad said if you come, Ms. Annie will cry. So you shouldn't come."

My hands began to tremble. Annie. Jason's piano teacher.

And Bill’s first love.

I shifted my gaze to my husband. I waited for him to correct our son, to laugh it off as a child’s misunderstanding. He didn't. He just held my stare, his jaw set in a hard line.

"You're taking your ex-girlfriend on a vacation with our son?" I asked, the volume of my voice rising.

"Keep your voice down," Bill snapped. "It's not a vacation. It's a healing retreat."

"A what?"

"Annie’s mental health has taken a severe downturn lately," he explained, his tone shifting to one of practiced patience. "Her therapist recommended a change of scenery. Jason and I are just going to keep her company. We won't do anything out of line."

"Nothing out of line?" I stepped away from the counter. "You're a married man, Bill. You're taking another woman on a trip and telling our son I can't come because it will upset her!"

"She's fragile right now, Maria."

"Tomorrow is my birthday!"

The words tore from my throat before I could stop them. I gripped the edge of the island, my knuckles turning white.

"You're not staying?" I whispered. "For my birthday?"

Bill sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "We can celebrate when I get back. It's just a date on the calendar. Annie actually needs me right now."

I stared at the man I had built a life with. Six years of supporting his career, managing this massive house, raising our child, and standing by him through every corporate crisis.

"She always needs you," I said bitterly. "And you always choose her."

"That is ridiculous."

"Is it?" I challenged, stepping closer. "Last month, you bought her that diamond pendant. The one I showed you in the magazine. The one I dreamed about for our anniversary."

Bill’s eyes narrowed. "I told you, she was going through a hard time and needed a pick-me-up. It was just a gift."

"I never got a gift!" I shouted, tears finally spilling over my lashes. "I never get anything, Bill! You gave my dream necklace to your first love, and now you're giving her my birthday!"

Jason shrank back, hiding behind his father's leg. "Mommy is yelling," he whimpered.

Bill placed a protective hand on Jason's shoulder, glaring at me.

"Look what you're doing," Bill said. "You're scaring him."

"I'm scaring him? You're teaching him that it's okay to abandon his mother!"

"Maria, you are too sensitive," Bill said, his tone thick with condescension. "Annie is sick. You shouldn't act like this. It's incredibly selfish."

Selfish.

The word echoed in my mind, mocking me. I had poured every ounce of myself into this family. I had cooked, cleaned, smiled at corporate galas, and pushed my own needs aside entirely.

My chest heaved. I opened my mouth to scream, to demand he cancel the trip, to threaten to pack my own bags.

Then, a sharp ringtone cut through the tension.

Bill pulled his phone from his pocket. The screen lit up. I didn't need to see the caller ID to know who it was. The soft, melodic ringtone was assigned to only one person.

He answered immediately, putting it on speaker by habit before pulling it to his ear. But the voice carried in the quiet kitchen.

"Bill?"

Annie’s voice was thin, trembling, like a delicate glass about to shatter.

"I'm here," Bill answered softly. His entire posture changed. The harsh lines of his face melted into pure concern.

"The power went out in my apartment," she whimpered over the line. "It's so dark. I'm scared. I don't know what to do."

"Did you check the breaker?"

"I don't know where it is," she sobbed. "Please, Bill. I can't be alone in the dark right now. The walls feel like they're closing in."

"Breathe, Annie. I'm on my way."

He hung up the phone.

I stood frozen. "You're leaving right now?"

"She's having a panic attack," he said, already turning toward the hallway. He grabbed his keys from the console table.

"Dinner is almost ready," I said, my voice hollow.

"Put it in the fridge."

"Dad, wait!" Jason ran after him, grabbing his coat from the hook. "I want to go see Ms. Annie too! I can protect her from the dark!"

Bill looked down at our son, a fond, proud smile touching his lips. "Alright, buddy. Let's go be her heroes."

They didn't even look back at me.

The front door clicked shut, leaving me standing alone in the kitchen. The pasta sauce bubbled on the stove, the only sound in the massive, empty house.

I walked over to the burner and turned it off.

My birthday was tomorrow. My husband and my son were gone, rushing to the side of another woman.

A bitter smile stretched across my face, pulling at the corners of my mouth until it hurt. I wiped a stray tear from my cheek.

They wanted to play heroes for a fragile woman in the dark.

They had no idea what a woman left in the dark was truly capable of.
