Chapter 1 of My Husband Drugged Me for His Mistress

I woke to a headache that felt like someone had driven a spike through my temple.

The light coming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of our penthouse was too bright. Everything was too bright. I squeezed my eyes shut and tried to remember last night's party—Jaxson's tech industry friends, champagne in crystal flutes, Hayden Morrison hovering near the bar in that soft pink dress she always wore when she wanted to look harmless.

After that, nothing. Just fragments. The taste of something bitter under the sweetness of my drink. The floor tilting. Hands guiding me somewhere.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. Then again. And again.

I reached for it. The screen was a wall of notifications. Texts, emails, missed calls. My agency's name appeared six times in the call log.

I opened Instagram first. That was my mistake.

The sculpture filled my feed. It was me—my face, my body, rendered in hyperrealistic detail, every curve and angle captured with an intimacy that made my stomach turn. The piece was titled "Vulnerable Goddess." The artist credit read: Hayden Morrison.

The comments were worse than the image.

*Attention whore.*

*She probably paid for this herself.*

*So much for class.*

I scrolled until my hands shook. There were art critics calling it groundbreaking. Fashion bloggers calling me a sellout. Strangers calling me things I couldn't read without my vision blurring.

My phone rang. My agency. I answered.

"Kyla." My agent Simone's voice was tight. "We have a situation. Three brands are threatening to pull contracts. They're citing morality clauses. We need to get ahead of this—"

"I didn't consent to that sculpture," I said. My voice sounded flat even to my own ears.

A pause. "What?"

"I didn't pose for it. I don't even remember last night."

Another pause, longer this time. "Kyla, are you saying—"

"I need to go."

I hung up. My thumb hovered over Jaxson's contact, then stopped. He'd been at the party. He would have seen if something was wrong. He would have stopped it.

Wouldn't he?

The bedroom door opened. Jaxson came in carrying a tray with tea and toast, his expression arranged into perfect concern. He was still in his pajama pants, hair slightly mussed, looking like every magazine's version of the devoted husband.

"Hey." He set the tray on the bed and sat beside me, his hand warm on my shoulder. "I saw your phone blowing up. I know about the sculpture."

I stared at him. "You know?"

"It's all over the internet." He pulled me against his chest. His heartbeat was steady, calm. "I'm so sorry, Ky. Hayden should have asked your permission. I'll talk to her. This is—it's a violation."

His arms tightened around me. I let myself lean into him because I didn't know what else to do. Because five years of marriage had taught me that this was where I was supposed to feel safe.

"Maybe you should take a break," he murmured into my hair. "From work. Just until this dies down. You've been running yourself ragged anyway. This might be a blessing in disguise."

Something cold flickered in my chest, but I was too tired to examine it.

"I don't want to stop working," I said.

"I know. I'm just saying—you don't have to carry everything alone. Let me take care of you for once."

He kissed the top of my head. I closed my eyes and tried to believe him.

Later, after I'd forced myself to eat and Jaxson had retreated to his study for a call, I went to bring him coffee. It was habit. Something normal to anchor myself to.

I was halfway down the hall when I heard his voice through the half-open door.

"—better than expected." He was laughing. Actually laughing. "Her agency's already pulling contracts. She'll finally have no choice but to stay home."

I stopped walking. The coffee mug was warm in my hands.

"You were right," Jaxson continued. "The sculpture was the perfect move. Everyone's talking about it. And Kyla—she's devastated, but she'll get over it. She always does."

A woman's voice came through his phone speaker. Hayden. I recognized the soft lilt of it.

"It was so easy," she said. "She didn't even notice when I switched her drink. And she looked so peaceful lying there. Like a doll."

Jaxson laughed again. "Our masterpiece."

I stood in the hallway, coffee cooling in my hands, and felt something inside me crack clean through.

Not my heart. That would come later, in private, where no one could see.

What cracked was the illusion. The five-year-long belief that the man in that study had ever loved me as anything more than a possession.

I set the coffee on the hall table without making a sound. I walked back to the bedroom. I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at my phone—at the sculpture, at the comments, at the wreckage of the life I'd built.

Then I opened a new browser tab and typed: *Manhattan divorce attorney criminal conduct*.

When Jaxson came to bed that night, I let him pull me into his arms. I lay perfectly still against his chest, eyes open in the dark, listening to him breathe.

He thought I was broken.

He had no idea what he'd just created.
