Chapter 1 of My Husband Drugged Me for His Investor

The first thing I noticed was the beer.

Jalen didn't drink beer. Not the kind that came in dented cans from the corner bodega. For six years, he drank Pappy Van Winkle, poured over one ice sphere, in a crystal glass that cost more than most people's rent. I knew the ritual by heart. I had polished those glasses myself when the housekeeper was off.

But that Monday, when I walked into the kitchen of our Upper East Side penthouse, there were three empty Bud Lights on the counter. Sweating rings into the marble.

I wiped them up before he came out of the shower. I always did.

He left at ten that night. He left at ten the next night, too. And the one after that. He didn't say where he was going. I didn't ask. Asking was not part of the arrangement.

Instead, I did what I had learned to do over six years of living with a man who told me nothing. I opened his credit card statements.

There it was, four nights in a row. The Rusty Rail. Bronx. Charges of thirty, forty, sixty dollars. Cheap money for a man who once spent that on a bottle of water at Le Bernardin.

I stared at the name until the letters blurred. Then I closed the laptop, straightened the pens on my desk, and went to bed.

***

On Tuesday, I took the subway.

I hadn't taken the subway in years. Jalen preferred I use the car. Preferred, in his vocabulary, meant required. But that night I put on a plain black coat, tied my hair back, and rode the 6 train up into a part of the city I had never seen from the ground.

The Rusty Rail sat between a check-cashing place and a shuttered laundromat. The door was propped open with a brick. Inside, the air smelled like fryer oil and spilled lager.

I took a booth in the corner and ordered a club soda. The bartender didn't look up when she set it down.

But I looked at her.

She was twenty, maybe. Small, tight body poured into a red tank top. A tattoo of a rose crawling up the side of her neck. Loud laugh. Loud everything. She leaned across the bar to hear a construction worker's joke and let her hand rest on his forearm two seconds longer than necessary. When he flushed, she laughed again, throwing her head back so her throat showed.

Jazmine. I heard someone shout it across the room. Jazmine, another round.

She moved like she owned the place. Like she had never once considered that a man might not want her.

I understood, sitting there with my hands folded around my glass, exactly what Jalen had been drinking cheap beer to reach.

I left before he arrived. I did not finish my club soda.

***

Three nights later, he took me there himself.

"Get dressed," he said at nine. "I want you to see something."

I wore what he liked. Cream cashmere, pearls, low heels. In the car he didn't speak. He kept touching his watch, turning it around his wrist, and I felt the old cold thing crawl up my spine because I knew that tell. He only did that when he was about to do something he knew was wrong.

We walked into The Rusty Rail together and every head turned. A man in a five-thousand-dollar coat and a woman with the kind of posture you couldn't fake.

Jazmine was behind the bar. She saw us. She smiled slow.

Jalen walked me right up to the counter.

"Claire," he said, loud enough for the men on either side to hear. He wasn't looking at me. He was looking at her. "You should know what you are."

I kept my face still. I had been trained by six years of galas to keep my face still.

"A contracted mistress," he said, "who stays for the money."

He said it the way you'd say it looks like rain.

Jazmine laughed. A short, delighted bark, like he had given her a gift.

Something inside my chest went quiet. Not broken. Quiet. Like a room where someone had finally shut the door.

I set my hand flat on the sticky counter and said, "I'd like to go home now."

He smiled. "In a minute."

He made me stand there while he ordered a beer.

***

The next morning, over grapefruit and black coffee, he slid a piece of paper across the marble.

"Jazmine's coming with me to the gala," he said. He didn't look up from his phone. "Two weeks. The Plaza."

Five years I had hosted that gala. Five years I had memorized every donor's wife's name, every seating chart, every allergy.

I looked down. My name had been moved. Off the host table. To a small round table near the kitchen door.

"All right," I said.

He glanced up, just for a second, as if he had expected something else. Then he went back to his phone.

***

I did not cry. Not that week. Not the next.

I ran my four miles every morning in Central Park. I called my mother on Wednesdays and told her I was fine. I approved the florist's samples for the penthouse's spring refresh. I answered Jalen's texts within ninety seconds.

And on the tenth night, when he was gone again, I opened the back of my walk-in closet and pulled out a small leather weekender bag.

Into it I put a passport. Three thousand dollars in cash I had saved from the personal allowance he thought I spent on facials. A photograph of my mother. One dress that was mine before him.

I zipped it shut and pushed it behind the shoe boxes.

I didn't know yet what I was preparing for. I only knew, with the calm certainty of a woman who had learned to read a man's silences for six years, that something was coming.

And this time, I would not be standing there empty-handed when it arrived.
