Chapter 1 of My Husband Destroyed Our Marriage for His Mistress

My phone buzzed once at 8:47 p.m. One buzz. That's Marcus's signal for *read this now, say nothing yet.*

Marcus Webb has run my security detail for eleven years. Former Secret Service, the kind of man who doesn't blink when told to do something illegal, only asks how quiet I need it. His text was four lines. Cayden's driver had logged an unscheduled stop. An address in Tribeca. A building owned, on paper, by three shell companies, all of them tracing back to Victor Shaw.

I knew the name Victor Shaw the way you know a knife left on a counter. Real estate. Old money trying to look older. He'd been circling Hart Capital's deals for fifteen years, always losing, always smiling like he hadn't.

The last line of Marcus's text read: *Recommend visual confirmation.*

I didn't type anything back. I put on my coat.

The car was already at the curb by the time I came down, engine running, Marcus behind the wheel instead of my usual driver. That told me something too. He hadn't wanted this handled by anyone who might talk.

"You didn't have to come get me yourself," I said, sliding into the back seat.

"I know," he said. That was all. Marcus has never once explained a decision to me. It's one of the reasons I keep him.

We didn't talk on the ride down. I watched the city blur past the window, the wet shine of the streets, and thought about nothing in particular, which is a skill I've spent twenty years perfecting. By the time we pulled up to a black steel door on a street with no sign, no awning, nothing to mark it as anything, I had already decided I would feel whatever I was going to feel later. Not now.

Marcus walked me through a service entrance, past a kitchen no one was cooking in, up a narrow staircase that smelled like bleach and cigars. At the top was a small dark room with a single pane of glass set into the wall. One-way. I knew the trick immediately — Victor liked an audience he could control.

"He doesn't know you're here," Marcus said quietly. "Neither one of them does."

I didn't answer. I stepped up to the glass.

Below me was a lounge done up in the kind of masculine excess that's supposed to look like taste and just looks like money — dark leather, low lighting, a bar nobody was drinking at. And in the middle of the floor, on his knees, was my husband.

The floor around him glittered. Someone had scattered glass across it on purpose, the kind of detail that takes planning, that takes wanting to enjoy something slowly. Cayden's slacks were dark at the knee. Wet dark, spreading.

Victor Shaw stood over him in a suit that fit too well, holding a glass of something amber, looking down at Cayden the way you'd look at a dog that had finally learned to sit. I'd never met the man in person before that night. I didn't need an introduction to understand exactly what he was.

"Say it again," Victor said. Even through the glass, I could hear him fine — the room was wired for exactly this. "I didn't quite believe you the first time."

"Forgive the debt," Cayden said. His jaw was tight, the muscle in it jumping. "It's on me. Not her. Take it out on me."

"It already is on you," Victor said, and pressed the toe of his shoe into Cayden's kneecap, grinding it slow, like he was putting out a cigarette that wouldn't quite go out. Cayden's whole body went rigid. He didn't make a sound. His hands were flat on his thighs, fists white, and he didn't move them. He didn't stand. He didn't swing. Three years ago I watched this same man spit blood at five armed men and tell them to kill him rather than bend his knees.

He bent them now. For a girl named Oakley Cooper who wasn't even in the room to see it.

I watched. I didn't touch the glass of water someone had set on the ledge beside me. I didn't blink more than I needed to. I have sat through hostile takeovers, through board members trying to bury me alive with numbers, through my own father telling me I'd never run anything worth running. I know what my face looks like when it's giving nothing away. I made sure it looked like that now.

It went on for six more minutes. Victor finally stepped back, satisfied, and helped Cayden up by the elbow with a courtesy so exaggerated it was its own insult, guiding him to a chair like a nurse walking a patient. Cayden sat. Blood ran into his sock.

I set the untouched glass down without a sound and turned from the window.

Marcus was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He didn't ask what I wanted to do. He just opened the car door.

Inside, I looked out at the street, at the black door, at nothing.

"Full surveillance package on Oakley Cooper," I said. "Everything. Seventy-two hours."

"Understood," Marcus said, and pulled away from the curb like we'd just left a dinner reservation.
