Chapter 1 of My Husband Cut My Brake Lines for His Mistress

The reservation card sat in my coat pocket like a small warm animal.

Le Bernardin's Los Angeles pop-up. Corner table. Nine o'clock. I'd called three times to confirm the tasting menu Adrian pretended not to like but always finished. Five years today. I'd worn the navy dress he once said made me look like a woman who could ruin a man. I'd let my hair down the way he preferred it.

The elevator opened onto the forty-second floor of Thompson Tower. Glass everywhere. The city stretched flat and gold beneath us, the kind of view that made people forget they were high enough to fall.

His office door was closed.

I slowed. The receptionist had gone home. Only the low hum of the building, the click of my heels dying against the carpet. Through the door, I heard Derek's voice first—clipped, professional, the way he always sounded when Adrian was pacing.

Then Adrian.

"Move the Malibu delivery to Thursday. Presley wants the white peonies, not the pink."

I stopped.

Malibu. We didn't own anything in Malibu.

"And the anniversary dinner tonight, sir?"

A pause. A small one. The kind you'd miss if you weren't holding your breath.

"Send her something. Flowers. Whatever she likes."

"Sir—"

"Derek." His voice dropped into that lazy register he used when he wanted to end a conversation. "Jolene serves her purpose. She keeps the focus off Presley. She was never anything more than a convenient arrangement. Don't make it complicated."

There was no malice in it. That's the part that stayed with me. If he'd sneered, if he'd laughed, I could have called it cruelty. Instead he said it the way you'd order coffee.

My hand was still lifted to knock.

I lowered it.

I counted, because I needed something to do with my brain while everything under it went white. One. Two. Three. The card in my pocket. Four. Five. His cufflinks—I'd bought them for his birthday. Six. Seven. The photograph of my mother, tucked into the inside pocket of my bag, young and laughing and pregnant with the brother I never met. Eight. Nine.

At sixty, I stopped.

There was a side table by the door. A vase of white lilies, a small silver dish for cards. I took the reservation card out of my pocket, smoothed the corner where my thumb had dented it, and set it in the dish.

I turned around.

I walked to the elevator. I did not run. I pressed the button once. Waited. Watched the number climb. Stepped inside. The doors closed on my reflection—a woman in a navy dress with her mouth slightly parted, as if she'd been about to say something and forgotten what.

I did not cry in the elevator. I did not cry in the parking garage. I did not cry when I put the key in the ignition and sat there for a long time with the engine off.

I drove home. I hummed under my breath—some old song, I couldn't place it—the whole way.

---

The next evening I followed him.

The estate sat above the water in Malibu, low and white and lit like a gallery. I parked on the shoulder and walked the last quarter mile in flats I kept in the trunk. The floor-to-ceiling glass turned the house into a stage.

Presley was on the sofa. Cashmere throw across her legs. Bare feet.

Adrian moved through the frame with the calm of a man in his own kitchen. He plated her food himself—the seared scallops she liked, the ones I'd once mentioned I couldn't stand the smell of. He crossed to her, knelt, adjusted the blanket over her ankles. She said something. He laughed. It was a real laugh, one I had never earned from him, and it broke across his face like weather.

She reached up and touched his jaw.

He let her.

I watched for eleven minutes. I know because I timed it, the way you time contractions or the burn of a candle. When I turned to leave, my feet did not shake. My hands did not shake. Something inside me had already gone quiet, and quiet things do not tremble.

---

I called Semaj from a burner phone at four in the morning.

"The weather's turning," I said.

A beat of silence on the other end. New York was three hours ahead. He would have been awake anyway.

"How bad."

"Bad enough to pack."

"When."

"Soon. I'll tell you when."

He didn't ask what. He didn't ask why. My brother had spent a lifetime learning to hear what I couldn't say.

"Jo."

"Yeah."

"I'm already ready."

---

Over the following week I emptied myself out of the Thompson orbit in careful, invisible increments. My mother's photograph. My grandmother's ring. The passport I kept in a drawer Adrian had never opened. A safety deposit box in a bank Adrian's name meant nothing to. I smiled at the housekeepers. I kissed Adrian's cheek at breakfast. I let him rest his hand on the small of my back at a dinner where he did not once look at me.

Gloria Vane, the head housekeeper, passed me in the corridor one afternoon with an armful of linens. Her eyes lingered on my face a half second too long. She opened her mouth. Closed it. Looked away.

She knew something.

I filed it, the way I was filing everything now, and kept walking. The charity gala was in three days. Adrian had asked me to wear the pearl earrings. I told him I would.

I already knew, without knowing how I knew, that something was going to happen there.

I was going to let it.
