Chapter 1 of My Husband Called Me Staff at Our Baby's Celebration

The Plaza's grand ballroom looked perfect. Every detail was exactly as I'd planned it—white roses and peonies cascading from crystal vases, champagne towers catching the light from three massive chandeliers, two hundred place settings arranged in precise circles around the room. I'd spent weeks on this. Weeks choosing linens, tasting cake samples, arguing with the florist about the exact shade of ivory ribbon.

My son's one-month celebration. Our son's celebration.

I arrived two hours early, wearing the cream silk dress I'd bought specifically for tonight. The one that made me feel like myself again after months of postpartum exhaustion. I wanted to check the seating chart one more time, make sure the photographer knew which angles I wanted for the family portraits.

Kaiden met me at the service entrance.

Not the main doors where guests would arrive. The service entrance, where staff carried in extra chairs and the catering team unloaded warming trays.

"Everly." He was already in his tuxedo, his hair styled the way it looked in magazine profiles. "I need you to handle something."

He pressed a laminated badge into my hand.

I looked down. EVENT COORDINATOR, it read in bold letters. Below that, a smaller line: Plaza Hotel Staff.

"What is this?"

"Just a precaution." His voice was brisk, distracted. He was already looking past me, toward the ballroom doors. "Some of the investors don't know about... us. It's cleaner this way. You understand."

I didn't understand. I stared at the badge, then at my husband.

"Kaiden, this is our son's party. I planned every—"

"And it looks great. Really." He patted my shoulder the way he patted his assistant's shoulder when she brought him coffee. "But I need you to stay near the back tonight. Keep things running smoothly. Make sure the caterers don't fall behind, that kind of thing. Can you do that for me?"

Something cold settled in my chest. "Where will I sit?"

"You'll be moving around. Coordinating." He checked his watch. "Guests arrive in twenty minutes. I'm counting on you, Ev."

He walked away before I could respond.

I stood there holding the badge. My hands were shaking. I looked down at my cream silk dress—the one I'd bought to stand beside my husband, to hold my baby for photographs, to cut the ceremonial cake that had three tiers and fondant camellias that took the baker six hours to pipe.

I clipped the badge to my dress.

The ballroom filled quickly. I watched from behind a service door as Manhattan's elite streamed through the main entrance. Investors Kaiden had courted for years. Executives from firms I'd personally called, whose meetings I'd arranged, whose contracts I'd reviewed line by line at three in the morning while Kaiden slept.

They all walked past the head table, where a single chair sat empty beside Kaiden's.

I held my clipboard. I checked on the catering timeline. I made sure the champagne towers were filled.

At seven-fifteen, the main doors opened again.

Adalynn White stepped into the ballroom.

She wore red. A silk gown that looked like it cost more than my monthly grocery budget back when we were eating instant ramen. Her hair was swept up, diamonds at her throat. She was late enough that heads turned. Late enough that the room noticed.

Kaiden crossed the ballroom to meet her.

I watched him take her hand. Watched him lean in and say something that made her laugh. Watched him guide her—his palm against the small of her back—to the head table.

To the empty chair beside his.

She sat down like she belonged there. Like that chair had always been hers.

A waiter brought my son out from the side room where the nanny had been waiting. Kaiden took him, held him up for the room to see. Applause rippled through the crowd. The photographer moved in, flash popping.

Kaiden handed the baby to Adalynn.

She cradled him against her red silk dress, smiling for the camera. The photographer circled them, capturing angle after angle. Kaiden stood beside her, his hand on her shoulder. They looked like a family.

I stood behind the service door, watching through the gap. My son's face was turned away from me. I couldn't see his eyes.

The cake was brought out on a silver cart. Three tiers, fondant camellias, a tiny sugar bassinet on top. Kaiden handed Adalynn the cake knife.

She cut the first slice while the room applauded.

I had chosen that cake. I had sat with the baker for two hours, sketching the design on napkins, explaining exactly what I wanted. I had tasted seven different flavors before selecting the vanilla bean with raspberry filling.

Adalynn fed Kaiden a bite. He laughed. The photographer captured it.

I turned away from the door. My throat was tight. I walked to the service corridor, past the warming trays and stacked linens, and pressed my back against the wall.

I could still hear the applause from the ballroom.

I looked down at the badge clipped to my dress. EVENT COORDINATOR.

I closed my eyes and tried to remember how to breathe.
