Chapter 1 of My Husband Called Me Dramatic After Our Baby Died

The pain came in the middle of folding laundry.

I doubled over in our bedroom, my hands pressed to my stomach. The cramping felt like something tearing inside me. When I looked down, blood soaked through my cotton dress.

I grabbed my phone. Called Oliver.

It rang. And rang. And rang.

Voicemail.

I tried again. My fingers shook so hard I nearly dropped the phone. The apartment was silent except for my breathing, which came too fast, too shallow. Oliver was at the lab. He was always at the lab.

I called a cab.

At Seattle General, a nurse rushed me into an exam room. Monitors beeped. Hands pressed on my belly. A doctor with kind eyes leaned close and said words I couldn't quite hear over the roaring in my ears. Emergency surgery. Authorization required. Husband's signature.

I nodded and called Oliver again.

No answer.

I called six more times from the hospital bed. The IV drip in my arm felt cold. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. On the eighth call, he finally picked up.

"Emerie, I'm in the middle of something."

His voice was clipped. Irritated.

"Oliver, I'm at the hospital." My voice cracked. "The baby—they said I need surgery. They need you to sign—"

"Calm down," he said. "You're catastrophizing again."

I pressed the phone so hard against my ear it hurt. "The doctors said the baby is in danger. Please. I need you to come now."

A pause. I heard voices in the background. A woman's voice, soft and urgent. Leyla.

"I'll come as soon as the submission is filed," Oliver said. "Two more hours. This grant deadline is critical."

"Oliver—"

He hung up.

I stared at the phone in my hand. The screen went dark.

I called again. It rang twice, then went to voicemail. He'd silenced it.

The nurse came back. "Mrs. Marshall, we really need that authorization."

I nodded. My throat felt too tight to speak.

I don't remember deciding to leave the bed. I don't remember walking down the corridor or finding the stairwell. My body moved on its own, one foot in front of the other, climbing.

The rooftop door was unlocked.

I stepped out into the cold Seattle air. The sky was gray. It was always gray here. I walked to the edge and looked down at the street below. Cars passed. People walked. The world kept moving like nothing was wrong.

I called Oliver one last time.

He answered on the third ring. "Emerie, I told you—"

"If you don't come right now," I said, "I'm going to jump."

My voice didn't shake. It was flat. Hollow. The voice of a woman who had nothing left.

Silence on the other end.

Then: "You're being dramatic. I'll come when I'm done."

He hung up.

I stood there holding the phone. The wind pulled at my hair. My hospital gown flapped against my legs. I looked down at the street again. It would be so easy.

Footsteps behind me.

"Ma'am, please step back from the edge."

A nurse. Young, with wide frightened eyes. She held out her hand.

I let her lead me inside.

They performed the surgery two hours later. I signed the forms myself. The anesthesiologist's face swam above me, and then there was nothing.

When I woke up, the attending physician stood beside my bed. She had gray hair pulled back in a bun. Her expression was careful.

"Mrs. Marshall, I'm very sorry. We couldn't save the pregnancy."

I stared at the ceiling tiles. There was a water stain in the corner shaped like a bird.

"The damage was extensive," she continued. "Your uterus—we had to remove significant tissue. You won't be able to conceive again."

I nodded.

She waited, like she expected me to cry or scream or ask questions. But I had nothing. No tears. No words. Just a vast, cold emptiness where something used to be.

"Your husband should be here soon," she said gently.

I didn't correct her.

After she left, I lay in the bed and watched the light change outside the window. Evening came. The room grew dark. A nurse brought me water and discharge papers. I signed them and got dressed in the clothes I'd arrived in, the blood-stained dress now in a plastic bag.

Oliver arrived four hours after the surgery ended.

He still had his laptop bag over his shoulder. His hair was slightly mussed, like he'd run his hand through it. He looked around the empty room, confused.

"Where is everyone?" he asked.

I stood by the window, holding my purse.

"I'm ready to go home," I said.

He frowned. "They already discharged you? Why didn't you wait?"

I walked past him toward the door.

In the days that followed, Oliver went back to his schedule. He left early for the lab. Came home late. At dinner one evening, he looked at me across the table and said, "You're dwelling. It's not healthy."

I set down my fork.

The apartment was spotless. I'd cleaned it that morning, scrubbed every surface until my hands were raw. The cactus on the kitchen windowsill caught the last of the evening light.

"I want a divorce," I said.

Oliver blinked. "What?"

"I want a divorce."

He stared at me. Then he laughed—a short, disbelieving sound.

"You're being dramatic again," he said. "You always do this when you're upset."

I looked at him. Really looked at him. At the man I'd given everything to. The man I'd made myself small for. The man who hadn't come.

"I'm not being dramatic," I said quietly. "I'm done."
