My Husband Called Me a Stalker to Hide His Mistress Summary

At a charity gala, my husband of five years publicly brands me a stalker, shielding his pregnant mistress while security drags me out. I spotted her ring—identical to my 'one-of-a-kind' design. Callum had drained my parents' inheritance to build her a home and nursery, then changed the locks on the house I paid for. A forged loan in my name was his final move to erase me. Chapter 1 of My Husband Called Me a Stalker to Hide His Mistress

The photo was six feet tall, and my husband was smiling in it.

Not the tired smile he gave me over cold takeout at midnight. A real one. Wide and easy, his arm wrapped around a young woman with honey-blond hair and a loose silk gown that couldn't hide the curve of her belly.

I read the brass plaque underneath three times.

*Callum and Tessa Reed. Thank you for supporting the Children's Medical Fund as a family.*

"Ma'am? Are you all right?"

A volunteer in a red sweater touched my elbow. I didn't answer. I stepped closer to the donor wall instead, close enough to see the grain of the print.

It had to be someone else. Some other Callum. Some other Reed.

Then I saw the watch on his wrist. Steel face, navy band, a small scratch near the crown. I knew that scratch. I had made it myself, dropping the box on our kitchen tile the night of our fifth anniversary.

"Sweetheart, I'm so clumsy," I'd said, laughing.

"It's perfect," he'd told me, kissing my hair. "Now it's ours."

My fingers drifted to the sapphire brooch pinned over my heart. My mother's brooch. I'd worn it tonight because it felt like bringing her with me. Like showing her I had finally stepped into my husband's world.

Five years ago, my parents died on the interstate in the rain. The lawyers called the money they left me "life-changing." Callum had been renting a desk in a shared office back then. He couldn't even afford his own door.

He'd held both my hands in that lawyer's waiting room.

"Mara, I don't want a cent of it. I want a home. With you. That's all."

My aunt begged me to hire an independent advisor. I told her she didn't know him. I let Callum manage the investments while I ran my little design studio, and I never once asked to see a statement.

When the business trips stretched longer, I packed his bags. When he canceled our anniversary dinner, I said I understood. When his phone lit up at two in the morning, I rolled over so he could talk in private.

"Big client," he'd whisper. "I'm doing this for us."

I'd even stopped seeing my friends so he wouldn't feel guilty about being gone.

And this Christmas Eve gala? He'd told me it was investors only.

"You'd be bored to tears, Mar. It's all spreadsheets in tuxedos."

So I'd begged an invitation off Daniel Okafor, a friend from our wedding party. I wanted to surprise him.

Well. Surprise.

"Ma'am," the volunteer tried again, "can I help you find your table?"

"Who put this up?" My voice came out flat and strange. "This picture. Who gave you this?"

"The donors submit their own—"

"Honey? What are you doing here?"

The voice came from behind me. Warm. Familiar. The voice that had said *I do* under my parents' old oak tree.

I turned.

Callum stood three feet away in a black tux, a champagne flute in one hand. The smile slid off his face so fast it was almost funny. His skin went gray under the chandeliers.

The blond woman from the photo stood at his side. Up close, she looked about twenty-five. One hand rested on her stomach.

She tucked her other arm through his like she'd done it a thousand times.

"Cal?" she asked brightly. "Who's this?"

He moved before he answered. One smooth step, putting his shoulder between her and me. Shielding her.

From me.

"She's—" He cleared his throat. "She's a woman I used to know."

Something cracked inside my chest. I actually heard myself laugh, a short ugly sound that made the volunteer flinch.

"A woman you *used* to know?"

"Mara." His jaw went tight. "Not here."

"Then where, Callum? Our kitchen? Our bedroom? The one you sleep in maybe four nights a month?" I jabbed a finger at the giant photo. "Five years. What were those five years?"

He grabbed my wrist. Hard. He pulled me two steps toward the exit and leaned down until his breath hit my ear.

"Listen to me very carefully. Half the board is in that room. If you make a scene, you'll destroy everything I've built. Do you understand?"

"Everything *you* built?" I yanked against his grip. "With whose money?"

His fingers dug in deeper.

"Cal." Tessa's voice had changed. The sweetness was gone. She was staring at me now, really staring, from my brooch down to my shoes. "Why is she talking about your bedroom?"

"She's confused, babe. Go sit down."

"I'm not confused." I turned to her. "Ask him who he's been married to since—"

Tessa gasped and folded forward, both hands clutching her belly.

"Oh my God. Oh my God, she's upsetting me. Cal, the baby—"

Heads turned all across the ballroom. A string quartet faltered mid-note.

"She came at me," Tessa cried, loud enough for the back tables. "I'm seven months pregnant and she came at me!"

"I didn't touch you!"

Callum let go of my wrist. For one stupid second, I thought he was finally going to tell the truth.

Instead, he raised his free hand and signaled across the room.

"Security! Can I get some help over here?"

Two men in dark suits started weaving through the tables.

"Callum." My throat closed around his name. "Tell them who I am."

He looked right through me. Then he turned to the crowd and spread his palms like a man at the end of his patience.

"I'm so sorry, everyone. This woman has been following me for a long time. I've tried to handle it quietly." He sighed. "Clearly that didn't work."

The whispers rolled over me like water.

"Is that the stalker?"

"Poor Tessa, in her condition."

"Look at her. She's obviously not well."

A heavy hand closed around my upper arm. "Ma'am, let's go. Nice and calm."

I didn't fight. I couldn't feel my legs. All I could see was Callum bending over Tessa, rubbing slow circles on her back, murmuring the same words he used to murmur to me after my parents' funeral.

"It's okay. I've got you. I'm right here."

The guard tugged me toward the doors.

Tessa straightened, dabbing her eyes, and reached up to fix Callum's bow tie. The light caught her left hand.

I stopped walking so suddenly the guard stumbled.

A thin platinum band. A row of tiny channel-set diamonds. A little twisted rope of white gold on one side.

I looked down at my own finger.

Same platinum. Same diamonds. Same twisted rope.

Callum had designed my ring himself. He'd told me it was one of a kind.

"Ma'am, keep moving."

"Wait." I wrenched toward her. "Your ring. Take it off. Look inside it."

Tessa pulled her hand to her chest. "Excuse me?"

"Look inside it!"

She didn't. She didn't have to. When she lifted her hand to shove a lock of hair back, the band rolled on her finger, and for half a second the inner edge flashed under the chandelier.

An engraving. *C & T.* And a date.

Not our wedding date.

Mine read *June 14*. I'd traced those numbers with my thumb every night for five years.

Hers said *October 3*.

Same ring. Same jeweler. Same promise, word for word, given to another woman.

My husband hadn't just cheated on me.

He had built a second household, piece by piece, as a perfect copy of mine. He was even presenting her as his wife.

And as the doors swung shut in my face, Callum finally met my eyes across the ballroom.

He wasn't panicking anymore.

He was smiling.
