Chapter 2
Unexpectedly, Liam laughed coldly and said dismissively, "Do you think talking nonsense in public will pressure me? Make me go back? Give up! I don't fall for your tricks!"
"Zoe, no matter what, you can't joke about Ellie's life. How bad would it look if word got out."
Gianna added.
"Uncle Liam, Ellie is fine. A few minutes ago, she messaged me asking to hang out," Layla said confidently to Liam.
Layla glanced at me and assured Liam.
In this way, everything was my fault.
The bystanders gradually looked at me differently, treating me as a horrible mother who cursed my own daughter's death.
In the past, I would have argued with Gianna and the others in such a situation.
Liam would then protect Gianna, and I would be livid.
Now, I only wanted to save my daughter.
She was in the prime of her youth.
She was so obedient, so sensible, and so hardworking.
"I didn't lie.
"Ellie is really in danger. She is critically ill. Please believe me this time. Can I beg you on my knees?"
I knelt down and cried in front of Liam, completely abandoning my dignity.
"You..."
Liam was stunned. He didn't expect me to do this.
"Oh! Zoe, what are you doing? If you want to make a scene, do it at home. You're embarrassing Liam in public! People will gossip about us."
Gianna pretended to advise me.
"What kind of skill is moral coercion? Uncle Liam hasn't done anything wrong. You're just making him lose face."
Layla hummed deliberately.
Liam, who had been slightly moved, immediately turned cold again and said to me, "Enough. Stop making a scene. Aren't you tired of this?"
"I'm really not making a scene! Please, go to the hospital with me!" I pleaded.
I crawled forward on my knees and grabbed Liam's pant.
Tears had already blurred my eyes and covered my cheeks.
But even so, Liam still didn't believe me. He only believed Gianna and Layla.
He pushed me and turned to Gianna, saying, "Ignore her. Let's continue picking hamsters."
"Alright."
Gianna nodded. She glanced at me with interest, clearly declaring her victory.
I just kept following Liam, begging him to save my daughter.
But Liam remained unmoved.
Buzz buzz!
A colleague called.
"Zoe...
"She... she is gone..."
My colleague's dejected voice reached my ears. My mind went blank. Then my heart wrenched in pain. I curled up on the ground in agony.
My whole body trembled uncontrollably.
My precious daughter died. She died because her biological father didn't go to the hospital to help with a blood transfusion.
She also died because of my incompetence...
At this moment, my heart died.
The people around us gossiped.
Liam's face darkened. He shouted angrily, "Isn't it enough? Who are you pretending for? Others will only say you're a clown!"
"Get up, Zoe!"
Gianna pretended to squat down to help me.
"Don't touch me!" I shouted.
I pushed Gianna away and then got up. I looked at Liam and said, "Let's divorce, Liam."
After speaking, I turned and left.
Liam didn't follow me.
I didn't expect him to.
After all, in Liam's heart, Gianna and Layla were his top priority. Ellie and I were insignificant.
Chapter 3
I went to the police station alone to handle Ellie's car accident. I saw on the surveillance footage that she was walking in the rain without an umbrella. She was crying and wandering aimlessly without looking up. She eventually ran a red light and was hit by a speeding car.
Usually, Ellie was very cheerful and had just achieved the top score.
Why was she crying?
Why did she go out in the rain?
None of this made sense.
I returned home with doubts. I checked the surveillance in the living room and saw Ellie arguing with Liam.
This was the first time, as far as I could remember.
Ellie cried and questioned Liam, "Dad, why did you alter my college application?"
"Why are you yelling? You are so immature."
Liam was sitting on the sofa with his legs crossed. "Gianna's son has poor grades. If you go to a prestigious school, they will be upset.
"You two should go to the same university. It will be nice to have company. You can marry him in the future."
Ellie was so angry that she trembled. She turned and ran out of the house.
Liam did not chase after her.
Seeing this, I clenched my fists.
No wonder Ellie's behavior was so unusual.
No wonder Ellie was angry.
It turned out that Liam had altered Ellie's college application to please Gianna. He even wanted to marry Ellie off to Layla.
Oh my God!
How could there be such a father in this world? He ruined his own daughter's dreams and future. He even pushed her into a bastard.
"What kind of person is Layla?
He has a terrible character. He lies habitually and often bullies classmates. He even hangs out with various thugs at school.
He is completely uneducated. His exam scores were extremely poor, barely enough to get into a university."
Yet Liam treated him like a treasure, almost like his own son.
Any random piece of clothing cost seven or eight thousand.
He changed phones five times a year, always getting the latest models.
On the other hand, Liam was unwilling to spend money on Ellie.
Ellie once asked Liam for a pair of running shoes worth over a thousand as a birthday gift. He scolded her for it.
Ellie kept apologizing.
I had a fight with Liam over this.
But I never imagined that Liam could be so pathologically biased.
He caused my daughter's death! And he was still buying computers for Layla.
Liam had not come back for the past few days.
I knew he did it on purpose. Just like before, leaving me to give in eventually.
But this time, I did not.
I silently handled Ellie's funeral while gathering evidence to file for divorce. I contacted the crematorium and arranged for her body to be transported there.
Even though several days had passed, I still could not recover. I could not help but cry while waiting outside.
But soon, I saw familiar figures. Liam and Gianna came out holding an urn.
"Have you finally realized your mistake? Apologize to Gianna and Layla, and I will forgive you."
Liam said while squinting at me.
"Forget it, Liam. Don't be so petty."
Gianna was putting on an act again. She continued, "Zoe, don't you sing and dance?
"I hope you can perform to send off John.
"It loved watching people sing and dance."
John was a dog.
Gianna was clearly insulting me, wanting me to make a fool of myself.
Liam, on the other hand, agreed and nodded. "Look at how generous Gianna is. Unlike you, so petty.
"Perform at the memorial service for John later.
"By the way, where is Ellie? She was supposed to have dinner with Layla tonight. Why hasn't she replied to messages? It's very rude. I don't know who she learned it from.
"Quickly call her over to bond with Layla."
Seeing Liam so obedient and listening to Gianna, I became angry.
He was indifferent to Ellie's accident but went out of his way to care for Gianna's dog.
Was my daughter not even worth as much as a dog?
"You want me to perform for a dog? No way! Liam, have you lost your mind? Do you do everything Gianna says? You might as well be her husband!
"And Layla is nothing! Is he worthy of my daughter? You keep trying to pair them up.
"You drove Ellie to her death!
"You don't deserve to be a father! You're a jerk!"
I shouted angrily at Liam.
Liam's face darkened instantly.
"Even if you don't want Ellie to be with Layla, you don't have to curse her to die again."
Gianna said while raising an eyebrow.
"There is no mother like you in this world. Joking about her daughter's life repeatedly."
Layla echoed her sentiments.
Influenced by their words, Liam frowned and said, "You disappoint me greatly.
"I thought you had reformed, but you have only gotten worse..."
Before Liam could finish, the crematorium staff's voice came through, "Ellie Clark's family, please enter the funeral room."
Hmm?
Hearing this name, Liam's expression suddenly froze.
I was in no mood to argue with Liam anymore. I hurried into the funeral room. After receiving the cremation certificate, I personally closed the urn.
"Sweet baby.
"I will take you home."
I came out of the funeral home in tears. Liam and Gianna were still there.
"Zoe!
"Whose ashes are these?"
Liam stared intently at the ashes in my hand. His voice began to tremble.
