My Husband and Son Chose My Best Friend Summary

Six years of custody battles ended on Christmas Eve when my son declared my former best friend—his father's mistress—more his mother than I ever was. I didn't cry or beg. I signed the divorce, withdrew my petition, and booked a flight out. My husband expected me crawling back within a week. Then the hospital called: an allergic reaction. My little boy needed me. I turned the taxi around, only to hear laughter through the door—my terror was their entertainment, my love a bet they thought they'd win. They were wrong.

Chapter 1 of My Husband and Son Chose My Best Friend

I heard my son before I saw him.

"Do we have to stay long, Dad?"

Elliot's voice bounced down the hallway of the Suffolk Probate and Family Court. Eight years old, and already he sounded bored with me.

I sat on the wooden bench outside Courtroom 4B, a manila folder on my lap. My name is Maren Ellis. For six years, I'd fought Adrian Hayes for custody of our son. Today was the seventh hearing in the latest round of our custody case. It was the last business day before Christmas, and my lawyer had promised we would be finished before the building closed.

"Not long, buddy." Adrian's laugh was low and easy. "Your mother will cry, her lawyer will ask for another delay, and we'll be at Sophie's by four."

They turned the corner. Adrian wore his charcoal coat, the one I bought him the year Elliot was born. Elliot held his hand tight, like I might grab him and run.

Adrian spotted me. His mouth curled.

"Maren. Right on time. You never miss a chance to ruin Christmas."

I said nothing.

Elliot pressed himself against his father's leg. "Why does she always do this?"

"Ask her."

My son's eyes met mine. Gray, like Adrian's. Cold, like Adrian's.

"I want to live with Dad," he said. "And Aunt Sophie. She makes cocoa with the little marshmallows. She doesn't make me sit in court."

Adrian squeezed his shoulder. Pride lit his whole face.

"You hear that? Out of the mouth of babes." He checked his watch. "I already booked dinner. Sophie's got the tree waiting. Elliot's putting the star on top this year."

"I'm the tallest now," Elliot said. "Except Dad."

Once, he'd told me I was the tallest person in the world. He'd been three. I'd carried him up and down our apartment hallway at two a.m. with a fever of a hundred and four.

He didn't remember. I'd stopped expecting him to.

"Ms. Ellis?" A clerk opened the courtroom door. "Counsel, the judge is ready."

My lawyer, Rachel Mercer, stood beside me. She had spent the morning making sure I understood every page. She asked once more whether I wanted time.

"No," I said. "I want to stop."

Adrian's brow pinched. "Stop what?"

I walked past him before he could answer his own question.

---

Judge Okafor sat behind the bench. Both lawyers took their places. Elliot stayed in the hallway with the court's family-services worker; the judge had already spoken with him separately about his wishes.

"Ms. Ellis, your attorney says you want to withdraw your request to change primary physical custody. Is that correct?"

"Yes."

"Your divorce became final last year. Today's agreement concerns parenting arrangements. It does not terminate your parental rights or your financial responsibilities. You understand that?"

"I do."

Rachel touched the edge of our copy. The agreement left Elliot living with Adrian. It paused the disputed visits while I relocated, allowed written contact through counsel, and left a way to seek a different arrangement later.

There would be no more waiting on a doorstep for a visit that had been canceled after I left home. No more asking my son to spend an afternoon with a woman he had been taught to fear.

"And no one has threatened you into signing?" the judge asked.

I looked at Adrian. Six years of assessments, supervised visits, motions, legal bills. Some delays had been ordinary court delays. Others had started with his lawyer challenging another report or demanding another review. Adrian had told Elliot every one of them was my fault.

"I made this decision with my attorney," I said.

"May I ask why?"

"Because continuing like this is hurting me. And it isn't helping my son."

The judge studied me, then asked both lawyers to confirm the terms on the record.

When we were finished, Elliot came back into the hallway with the family-services worker. Rachel handed Adrian's lawyer the signature copy. Adrian watched me over the top of it.

Adrian looked at me, then at the papers on the desk. His lip lifted.

"So. You finally figured it out." He tucked his hands into his coat pockets. "Six years, and you finally decide you've had enough. I could've saved you the money."

I didn't answer.

Elliot stepped forward. His cheeks were pink from the cold. "I don't want to miss Christmas with Aunt Sophie again because of your stupid court thing. Every year you make us come here."

The old words rose in my throat. Your father asked for every delay. I have the filings. I have the dates. I'd said them so many times before. To lawyers. To judges. To a little boy who never believed me.

I swallowed them.

Instead, I picked up the agreement and slid it across the desk toward Adrian.

"I signed it this morning," I said. "I'm withdrawing the custody challenge. I'm moving to Portland."

The room went still.

Adrian didn't touch the paper. His eyes narrowed.

Elliot's mouth opened, then closed. Then his face crumpled into a scowl. "Is this another trick? You're acting. You always act sad so people feel sorry for you."

"No trick, sweetheart."

"Don't call me that."

"Okay."

He blinked. He'd braced for tears. I could see it in his narrow shoulders, the way they sat high and stiff. He didn't know what to do when none came.

Adrian finally laughed, short and sharp. "Nice try, Maren. You think I'll panic and offer you weekends? Here's how this works. If you sign and walk out of here, you don't get to show up whenever you feel guilty. You won't see him on a whim. You'll go through me."

"I understand."

"Do you?" He leaned closer. "Because in a week you'll be calling, begging."

I looked at them. Father and son, side by side. Same jaw. Same tilt of the chin. Same flat, impatient stare. I'd spent six years trying to pull Elliot out of that mold. He'd climbed right back in every time.

"You can both have the Christmas you wanted," I said quietly. "I'm not going to keep fighting in these hallways."

Adrian's attorney nudged him. The terms had already been reviewed in court; only his signature on our copies remained. Adrian signed in one fast stroke, eyes still on me. Waiting.

Waiting for me to break. To reach for Elliot. To beg.

I gathered my copy, tucked it into the folder, and buttoned my coat.

"Merry Christmas, Elliot."

He didn't answer.

I walked out.

---

The hallway felt longer than it had an hour ago. My footsteps echoed off the marble. I didn't slow down. I didn't look back.

Behind me, a courtroom door creaked.

"Maren." Adrian's voice. Not mocking this time. Something thinner. "Maren, wait."

I kept walking.

"You're really just leaving?"

The front doors hissed open. Cold air slapped my face. Snow caught in my eyelashes, and I stepped out into it.

Through the glass, I caught one last glimpse. Elliot stood in the lobby, his small hand pressed flat against the door. His forehead was creased, the way it used to get before a thunderstorm.

For a second, he looked like he might run after me.

Then Adrian's hand landed on his shoulder.

"Come on. Let's go. Sophie's waiting for us."

The door slid shut.

I turned up my collar and walked into the snow. In my coat pocket, my phone buzzed once.
