Chapter 3
I'm unreasonable!?
I clenched my fists.
Most of the people here were Powell family relatives. My parents were outside the hotel waiting for my relatives and hadn't come back yet.
The Powell family relatives were all looking at me with accusatory eyes, as if I were the one making trouble for no reason.
I couldn't understand. I didn't even know what I had done wrong.
I still placed my hope on my husband. "Honey, but they said those things about my friends. They clearly don't care about me at all! And today is supposed to be our big day. How can they joke like that?"
James's patience ran out, and his tone became harsh. "Ayah, can't you consider the occasion? Even Destiny isn't bothered, so why are you still talking about it?"
Just then, my parents squeezed through the crowd. "What's going on?"
When my mom saw I was crying, she hurried over to hold me. "Don't cry, don't cry. No one can make my precious daughter suffer."
My mother-in-law said, "You should discipline your daughter. She's being unreasonable and causing trouble in this setting. A person like that doesn't deserve to enter the Powell family."
My mom's brows furrowed immediately, but she still kept her composure and politely asked, "What do you mean by that?"
My dad also looked at James with a stern face. "James, explain what's going on."
James responded nonchalantly, "My brother just made a few jokes to lighten the mood, but Ayah wouldn't let it go, making it awkward for everyone."
So now it's suddenly all my fault?
I shouted, "James!"
Still furious, I flipped over the table next to me, spilling cups, plates, and fruit dishes all over the floor. I was even angry about my carefully selected wedding dress, worried it might get dirty.
Even the shoes were custom-made.
Now, I used them to ruin my wedding venue.
But I hesitated only for a moment, then forcefully stomped on the items scattered on the floor again.
Reasoning clearly wasn't going to work.
So, I might as well go crazy!
"Ah!"
People around me screamed in shock at my actions.
"What kind of bride acts like a shrew?"
"Oh my God, she must be mentally unstable. How else would she explode like this?"
"If it were me, I wouldn't let such a woman into the family!"
I wiped away my tears and snorted. "Fine, I'll show you what it means to be 'unreasonable'! I haven't even married into your family yet, and you're already treating me like this. Well, I'm not getting married today!"
"Mom, Dad." I called out.
My mom and dad immediately said, "If they can't stand up for you today, don't expect them to in the future. Don't marry yet. Don't cry, my girl."
So, amidst everyone's stunned gazes, I left the hotel with my relatives.
Chapter 4
All my days and nights spent planning the wedding were wasted.
Chapter 5
James held onto the car door, trying to stop me from leaving.
"Honey, don't be mad. Marriage isn't a game, so don't act on impulse!
"Honey, I'm sorry; it's all my fault. I'll go scold Junior right away; he's just young and immature."
He's in his twenties and still "young"?
Sitting in the backseat and wiping my tears, I said, "James, you didn't stand by my side, and you even sided with them against me."
James looked impatient, and his tone was full of disbelief. "It's just a small issue. It's not a big deal! Honey, can I just apologize?"
"A small issue?" I calmed down, and my uncontrollable tears finally stopped. "You think it's a small issue?"
Destiny just came running over at this moment.
She stood next to James and begged. "Ayah, please don't be angry. I take full responsibility for what happened today. Please don't get upset. It's time for the auspicious hour and you should go inside."
I was standing up for her, yet she didn't say a single word earlier.
Now she's telling me not to throw a tantrum?
I said, "Destiny, come with me."
Although the incident was caused by Destiny, it opened my eyes to Mrs. Powell's true nature, and especially to James' attitude. At this point, I was having second thoughts about the marriage.
Destiny didn't respond; she just looked over at James.
James frowned, his tone frustrated. "Ayah, we've invited so many people today, do you really want to embarrass everyone like this?"
I bit my lip, remaining silent, my heart softening.
The Powell family was in business, and they had invited many business partners today. This outburst had indeed made us a laughing stock.
Destiny said, "Today's situation is indeed frustrating. Let's give Ayah some time to calm down."
Hearing that, I immediately snapped out of it. "James, do you not think you bear any responsibility for this?"
"Ayah! You've really disappointed me!" James slammed the door.
Once again, my tear-prone nature took over, and I started crying because of his words.
When I got home, my parents were calling all the relatives to cancel the wedding.
Destiny followed me and helped me take off my wedding dress.
"Mrs. Powell's words were just too harsh. If you marry into that family, you'll suffer."
"Your little brother-in-law has no manners at all; I doubt he'll ever respect you as his sister-in-law."
"And James, what's with his attitude? He even said you're immature? Is there something wrong with his head?"
"And the Powell family's relatives, are they all toxic? Do they have no sense of right and wrong?"
Listening to Destiny vent about the entire Powell family, I felt a little less angry, and my mind cleared up.
Destiny noticed my silence and cautiously asked, "Ayah, what are you thinking? Are you still going through with the wedding?"
I shook my head.
My face still hurt from being slapped by Mrs. Powell, and just thinking about her made my heart burn with anger!
Destiny passionately exclaimed, "Exactly! Ayah is so beautiful, you can definitely find someone better than James! A man who doesn't defend you? He's not worth it!"
Her exaggerated behavior made me chuckle, and the tension in my heart eased a little.
"Destiny, do you really think James isn't worth marrying?"
James and I had been together for five years, from our freshman year of college to graduation and working, such a long time.
During our relationship, James had always been a good boyfriend. There were never any "little sisters" or flirtatious friends; he was always considerate of me. For every holiday, he would set reminders and prepare gifts in advance.
We've had our arguments, and every time he felt helpless, but he was always the first to apologize and coax me.
When I first started working, I had to work late. He was busy too, but he still insisted on picking me up from work.
That first half-year of work was exhausting, but whenever we walked home hand in hand under the moonlight, all the frustration and fatigue disappeared.
Back then, I thought, if life continued like this, it wouldn't be so bad.
Later, when James secured his position at Powell Group, he arranged an elaborate proposal, saying he wanted to build our home together.
After being with him for so many years, he gave me a sense of security. He never made me jealous of other women.
Thinking about all this, I couldn't help but cry again.
How did such a joyful day turn into this mess?
