My Fiancé Left Me at the Altar for His Assistant
My Fiancé Left Me at the Altar for His Assistant Summary
Chapter 1 of My Fiancé Left Me at the Altar for His Assistant
Damian Prescott hated waiting.
In six years, I had learned that the way other women learn their man's coffee order.
When we toured penthouses, the broker showed up ten minutes late. Damian walked out before she finished apologizing.
"My time costs more than her commission," he said.
At the city clerk's office, our marriage license appointment ran behind. He stood, buttoned his jacket, and left me holding the paperwork.
And last spring, I begged him to come with me to a tiny café in Brooklyn. They made osmanthus custard, the same one my mother used to make before she died.
"There's a line," he said, glancing at it from the car. "Fifteen minutes? That's fifteen minutes of my life, Sienna."
So tonight, I came early.
I stood outside the Langford Hotel in the Manhattan cold, coat pulled tight. Damian's company was celebrating a record quarter inside. I didn't want him waiting even one second for me.
Through the glass, I found him at once.
He wasn't at the head table. He was in line at the bar.
His suit jacket was folded over his arm. He checked his watch once, then smiled at someone behind him.
Vanessa Reed. His executive assistant.
She sat on a barstool in a silver slip dress, swinging one heel, waving at him like a girl at a carnival.
I watched the clock on my phone.
Five minutes. Ten. Fifteen.
Twenty.
He finally reached the bartender and came back with a pink cocktail. When a group of drunk men stumbled toward her, Damian stepped in front of Vanessa and held them off with one arm.
My phone buzzed.
**Damian:** Party's over. I'm going home. Don't wait up.
Through the window, he was laughing at something she said.
I typed two words.
**Me:** I won't.
---
At one in the morning, the elevator chimed in our penthouse.
Damian loosened his tie as he walked in. He stopped when he saw me on the sofa.
"Why are you still awake?" His brows pulled together. "I told you not to wait up. Do you ever listen?"
"Where were you?"
"I drove Vanessa home." He tossed his keys on the counter. "She just got out of a bad relationship. She shouldn't be alone right now."
He said it the way he'd mention the weather.
I reached into my pocket and set a small card on the coffee table. Cream paper. Gold letters. The café in Brooklyn.
"Our reservation," I said. "It expired last week. You promised you'd come. My mom's favorite dessert, remember?"
He glanced at it for half a second. Then he pulled out his wallet, slid out a black credit card, and flicked it onto the table beside the reservation.
"Buy yourself something nice." He rubbed his temple. "Stop making a scene, Sienna. It's late."
I didn't touch the card.
"You waited twenty minutes for her drink."
His hand froze at his collar.
"I was outside the hotel," I said. "I watched you. Twenty minutes, Damian. You wouldn't wait fifteen for me."
For a moment, he looked almost caught. Then his mouth curved, cold and thin.
"You're comparing yourself to a woman who's going through a difficult time?" He shook his head. "God. I didn't know you were this petty."
I opened my mouth.
And then I laughed.
It came out small and strange, like something breaking inside a box.
He stared at me. "What's funny?"
"Nothing." I stood. "Good night, Damian."
I walked to the bedroom. Before I could close the door, his phone rang.
His whole voice changed.
"Hey. No, I'm not busy." Soft. Warm. A voice I hadn't heard aimed at me in years. "Can't sleep? Okay. I'll stay on the line until you fall asleep."
I shut the door without a sound.
---
My mother's recipe book lived in the bottom drawer of my nightstand. The leather was cracked. Her handwriting slanted to the right, the way she always leaned toward people she loved.
I turned past the osmanthus custard. Past the almond cookies. To the very last page.
I had never read it before. I always stopped at the desserts.
*My Sienna,*
*Never spend your life waiting for someone who wouldn't wait for you.*
*Love, Mom.*
I read it three times.
Then I twisted the engagement ring off my finger. It left a pale band of skin behind, like a ghost of the last six years.
I set it on the nightstand.
Through the wall, Damian murmured, "I'm still here. Go to sleep."
I didn't go out to tell him.
Not yet.
---
At seven the next morning, he was gone. He hadn't noticed the ring.
I called my lawyer, Margaret Okafor.
"Sienna? It's early." Papers rustled. "Is everything all right?"
"I need you to pull the prenup," I said. "Mine and Damian's. I want every line reviewed."
A pause. "Reviewed for what, exactly?"
"For what happens if I walk away."
Margaret was quiet for a beat. "Okay. I'll have it on my desk by noon. Anything else?"
"The wedding account." I stared at the ring catching the gray light. "Every dollar in it came from my mother's trust. I want all of it moved back. Today."
"Damian's name is on that account as an authorized user."
"Then take it off."
"Sienna." Her voice gentled. "Does he know?"
"He'll find out when he needs it."
"I'll start the transfer," she said. "Call me if you need anything."
I hung up.
My phone lit up in my hand. An Instagram notification. Vanessa Reed had posted.
I shouldn't have opened it.
I did.
A photo. Soft lighting. Vanessa in that silver dress, her back to the camera. Damian stood behind her, head bowed, fingers at the nape of her neck, fastening a thin diamond necklace.
His face held a tenderness I didn't recognize.
The caption read:
*Some promises are worth waiting seven years for.*
Seven years.
I had been with him for six.
I zoomed in on the necklace, on his hands, on the date stamp in the corner. Last night. After he told me not to wait up.
The comments were already flooding in.
*Finally!!*
*He waited for you all this time.*
*Endgame couple.*
My thumb hovered over the screen.
Six years ago, Damian had walked into my life like a man running from something. I thought he was choosing me.
Now I stared at that caption and felt the floor shift beneath me.
Maybe he never chose me at all.
Maybe all this time, I was just the place he waited.
Waited for her to come back.
