Chapter 1 of My Fiancé Faked Embezzlement to Leave Me for His Ex

I found it on a Tuesday night.

I wasn't looking for anything. I was scrolling Reddit on the couch with a glass of wine, half-watching some cooking show Sterling had left on. He was in the shower. The apartment was quiet except for the hum of traffic thirty floors below and the distant rush of water through pipes.

The post was in a relationship advice thread. Anonymous, like most of them. The title was smug: "Finally getting the life I deserve—advice on timing?"

I almost scrolled past it. But something in the first line snagged me.

*"So my ex just hit a massive financial windfall and we've been reconnecting. He's ready to leave his boring, plain fiancée but wants to do it cleanly. How do we time this right?"*

My thumb stopped moving.

I read it again. Then I read the rest.

She described a Tribeca apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows. A man who worked at a hedge fund. A fiancée who "decorates like she's nesting for a life he doesn't even want." She used the phrase "Pinterest-board personality." She said the fiancée had picked out throw pillows in cream and sage green.

I looked across the room. Cream and sage green throw pillows. The ones I'd spent two hours choosing at West Elm.

My chest went tight.

I kept reading.

*"He's so done with her. He says she's sweet but boring. No spark. I told him he should've left years ago but he was building his career, you know? Now he doesn't need to play it safe anymore. He's got enough money that we can do whatever we want. Travel. Start over. Live."*

The shower shut off.

I locked my phone and set it face-down on the couch. My hand was steady. My face was calm. Inside, something was breaking in slow motion, like ice cracking under weight it can't hold.

Sterling came out of the bathroom in a towel, hair damp, smiling that easy smile he always gave me after a long day. "Hey, babe. You good?"

"Yeah," I said. "Just tired."

He kissed the top of my head and went to the bedroom.

I waited until I heard the closet door slide open. Then I unlocked my phone and kept reading.

The Reddit user had a history. I clicked through. She posted in makeup subreddits, luxury fashion groups, and travel threads. In one comment, she'd tagged a location: a rooftop bar in SoHo. In another, she'd used a phrase I recognized: "champagne taste, tap water budget—until now."

I opened Instagram. I searched the SoHo bar's geotag. I scrolled through recent posts.

There.

A woman in a red dress, dark hair, champagne flute raised, caption reading: "Champagne taste finally meeting champagne reality."

Valentina Rodriguez.

Sterling's ex-girlfriend.

I stared at her face. She was beautiful in the way that photographs well—sharp cheekbones, perfect teeth, the kind of confidence that filled a frame. I remembered Sterling mentioning her once, years ago, casually. "We weren't serious," he'd said. "She wanted things I couldn't give her."

Apparently, now he could.

I closed Instagram. I opened my cloud storage. I scrolled through folders I'd created without ever naming why.

Photographs of expense reports Sterling had left on the kitchen counter. Screenshots of emails I'd glanced at over his shoulder. Receipts I'd found in his jacket pockets and photographed out of some quiet, nameless unease I'd never let myself articulate.

I'd been watching him for years without admitting I was watching.

Now I knew why.

Sterling came back into the living room, dressed in sweatpants and a T-shirt, and sat beside me. He smelled like soap and expensive cologne. He put his arm around my shoulders. "What are you looking at?"

"Work stuff," I said.

He kissed my temple. "Don't work too late."

"I won't."

He turned the TV volume up. I stayed perfectly still under his arm, phone in my lap, Reddit post still open.

I didn't cry. I didn't confront him. I didn't ask a single question.

I just sat there, breathing slowly, while the man I'd spent five years building a life with sat beside me, humming along to a commercial, completely unaware that I already knew everything.

When he finally went to bed, I stayed on the couch.

I opened a new tab. I searched: "New York State lottery recent winners."

Nothing public yet. But the Reddit post had been written like someone who'd already spent the money in her head. Like it was real. Like it was done.

I went to the bedroom. Sterling was asleep, one arm flung across my side of the bed. I stood in the doorway and watched him for a long moment.

Then I went to the closet. His blazer—the charcoal one he'd been wearing obsessively for the past two weeks—hung on the left side. I reached into the interior pocket.

Nothing.

I checked the other pocket. Empty.

I stepped back. He'd moved it. Of course he had.

But I'd seen him pat that pocket every morning with a private, satisfied smile. I knew what that smile meant now.

I walked to the bathroom, closed the door, and turned on the shower. I stood under water so hot it turned my skin red. I didn't cry. I just stood there until my breathing evened out and my hands stopped shaking.

When I came out, I looked at myself in the mirror. Same face. Same apartment. Same life.

Except now I knew the truth.

And the truth changed everything.
