Chapter 1

"Room 402. Intensive Care."

The triage nurse barely finished her sentence before I sprinted down the sterile white corridor. My sneakers squeaked harshly against the linoleum. The hospital lights buzzed overhead, casting a sickly yellow glow over the rushing doctors and rolling carts.

Ethan had been mugged. Blunt force trauma to the back of the head.

That was the only information the police gave me over the phone. We were supposed to be finalizing our wedding catering today. Instead, I was navigating a maze of medical equipment, my chest tight with a panic that threatened to swallow me whole.

I shoved open the heavy wooden door to room 402.

The heart monitor beeped in a steady, rhythmic thrum. Ethan lay on the narrow bed, a thick white bandage wrapped around his skull. His face was pale, shadows pooling under his cheekbones.

But he wasn't alone.

A woman sat in the plastic visitor’s chair, her manicured fingers resting softly over Ethan’s hand. She leaned in close, whispering something I couldn't hear.

Chloe Miller.

Ethan’s college girlfriend. The woman he broke up with six years ago.

"What are you doing here?" I demanded, my voice cracking the quiet atmosphere of the room.

Chloe snapped her head up. Her eyes widened in mock surprise, but a sharp, triumphant gleam flashed in her pupils. She didn't move her hand away from his.

"Keep your voice down," Chloe hissed, standing up to block my path to the bed. "He just woke up. The doctors said he needs absolute peace."

"Move away from my fiancé," I ordered, stepping around her.

I reached for Ethan. My fingers brushed his forearm, desperate for the familiar warmth of his skin.

He yanked his arm back as if I had burned him.

The sudden movement made the machines spike. Ethan scrambled up against the pillows, his chest heaving. His eyes, usually so warm and full of laughter, locked onto mine.

There was no recognition in them. Only fear. And a heavy, freezing hostility.

"Who are you?" Ethan asked. His voice was raspy, dry from disuse.

The question hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. My hand froze in mid-air.

"Ethan, it’s me," I said, forcing a nervous chuckle. "It’s Serena. Please don't joke like this. Not today."

He stared at me, his brow furrowing in deep confusion. He glanced past my shoulder, seeking out the other woman in the room.

"Chloe, is this her?" he asked, his tone urgent.

Chloe stepped forward, wrapping a protective arm around his shoulders. "Yes, honey. This is the woman I told you about."

"Told him what?" I spun around to face her. "What are you talking about?"

"Security should have stopped you at the lobby," Chloe said smoothly, her tone dripping with fake sympathy. "Ethan, don't look at her. Just stay calm. Your heart rate is climbing."

"Someone tell me what is going on!" I yelled.

Ethan winced, pressing a hand to his bandaged head. "Get her out of here. Please."

"Ethan!" I grabbed the metal bedrail. "We are getting married in three weeks! We’ve been together for five years. Look at me!"

I shoved my left hand in front of his face, the diamond engagement ring catching the harsh overhead light.

He didn't even glance at the ring. His eyes remained fixed on my face, completely devoid of the love that had anchored my life for half a decade.

"I have no idea who you are," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a cold, flat register. "But I know what you are."

"What?" My voice barely registered above a whisper.

"She warned me," Ethan continued, gesturing to Chloe. "She told me you might try to sneak in here while I was vulnerable."

"Chloe told you what?" I demanded, my blood turning to ice.

Chloe gave me a sad, pitying look. "Serena, you need to stop this. Your obsession has gone too far. Following him to the hospital? Claiming to be his fiancée? It’s sick."

"Obsession?" I stared at her, utterly bewildered. "You psychotic liar. We live together! We share a dog!"

"She broke into my apartment?" Ethan asked Chloe, his jaw tightening.

"Yes, baby," Chloe murmured, stroking his shoulder. "She’s been stalking you for months. The police are already building a case against her. She fabricated this whole fantasy in her head."

"That is a lie!" I screamed, digging into my purse. My hands shook violently as I pulled out my phone. "I have thousands of photos of us. Vacations. Holidays. Our engagement party. Look!"

I unlocked the screen and shoved the phone toward him. The background was a selfie of us on the beach in Malibu, his arms wrapped tightly around my waist.

Ethan squinted at the screen. For a split second, a flicker of uncertainty crossed his features.

Then Chloe sighed heavily. "Photoshop is incredibly easy to use these days. She plastered her face over mine, Ethan. Remember our Malibu trip?"

"Yes," Ethan said quickly, his eyes darting to Chloe. "I remember Malibu. We went for our anniversary."

"Exactly," Chloe said.

"Ethan, no!" I pleaded, tears finally spilling over my eyelashes. "That was us! You and me! You haven't spoken to Chloe in six years!"

"Stop screaming at him!" Chloe barked, her gentle facade cracking for just a moment. She reached over and pressed the red call button on the wall. "Nurse! We need security in room 402 immediately!"

"Ethan, please," I begged, lowering my voice. I fell to my knees beside the bed. "Look into my eyes. Really look at me. You know me. I'm Serena. You asked me to marry you in the rain outside our favorite diner. You hate tomatoes. You sleep on the left side of the bed. You love me."

He stared down at me. The monitor beeped faster.

For a moment, the room went completely silent. I waited for the fog to clear from his gaze. I waited for the man I loved to come back to me.

Instead, Ethan reached out and slapped my phone out of my hand.

The device hit the linoleum floor with a sharp crack, the glass screen shattering into a spiderweb of jagged lines.

"Get away from me, you crazy bitch," Ethan spat.

The words sliced through my chest. I rocked back on my heels, gasping for air.

Two heavy-set security guards burst through the door, followed by a frantic nurse.

"Get her out of here," Ethan ordered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "She’s a stalker. If she comes within a hundred feet of me again, I am pressing charges."

"Ma'am, you need to step out," the taller guard said, grabbing my upper arm.

"Take your hands off me!" I thrashed against his grip, but he was far too strong. He hauled me to my feet, dragging me backward toward the hallway.

"Ethan! She’s lying to you!" I fought against the guard, my shoes slipping on the slick floor. "Chloe is lying! Check your own phone! Call your mother! Ethan!"

He didn't look at me. He turned his face into Chloe’s neck, burying his face in her shoulder as if I were a monster he needed protection from.

Chloe looked over his shoulder as the guards dragged me through the door frame.

She didn't look scared. She didn't look sympathetic.

She smiled. A slow, terrifying smirk that promised she was just getting started.

The heavy wooden door slammed shut in my face, cutting off my view of the man I was supposed to marry.

I stood alone in the hallway, staring at the closed door, the shattered pieces of my life scattered on the floor inside. Chloe had stolen his memories, and she was going to use them to destroy me.

But as I wiped the tears from my cheeks, a new, burning anger ignited in my chest.

She thought I would just walk away.

She was wrong.

Chapter 2

The guard’s grip slipped just as his radio crackled with static. I didn't hesitate. I tore my arm free, spun on my heel, and slammed the heavy wooden door to room 402 open again.

"Serena, stop!" the guard shouted from the hallway.

I ignored him, throwing my weight against the door and throwing the deadbolt lock. The loud click echoed in the sterile room.

Ethan jerked upward against his pillows, his face twisting in raw disgust. "Are you insane? Get out!"

"Five years, Ethan," I said, marching straight to the foot of his bed. "You asked me to marry you outside of Mario's Diner. It was pouring rain. You knelt in a dirty puddle, and your jeans were soaked. You said you didn't care about the mud as long as I said yes."

He stared at me. His jaw clamped shut, forming a hard line. Not a single flicker of recognition crossed his features.

"We picked out the catering yesterday," I pushed on, my voice fracturing. "Mini crab cakes. You hate crab, but you insisted because I love them. You call me 'Rena' when you're sleepy. You have a crescent-shaped scar on your left shoulder from a childhood camping trip. We have a golden retriever named Buster!"

"Shut up," Ethan snapped. His fingers gripped the white hospital sheets, his knuckles turning stark white. "I don't know you. You sound like a lunatic reciting a stalker manifesto."

"It's our life!" I slammed my hands onto the metal footboard. "We share a home! We share a bed!"

Chloe stepped out from the shadows near the window. She didn't yell. She just shook her head, clutching a sleek leather tablet case against her chest.

"I didn't want to show him this while he was recovering," Chloe said softly, turning her gaze to Ethan. "But she leaves me no choice. You need to see how dangerous this woman really is."

"Show me what?" Ethan asked. His tone softened instantly as he looked at her.

That subtle shift in his voice felt like a knife twisting directly into my ribs.

Chloe unzipped the case and pulled out a thick stack of printed papers. She walked over and laid the first page on Ethan's lap.

"What is this?" I demanded, stepping forward.

Chloe stepped sideways, blocking my path. "Bank statements. From his account. The one you somehow gained access to."

"We share a joint account for the wedding expenses!" I yelled.

"Look at the highlighted lines, Ethan," Chloe instructed, completely ignoring my outburst.

Ethan picked up the paper. His eyes scanned the page, and his pale face hardened into stone. "A ten-thousand-dollar wire transfer. To a man named Marcus Thorne."

"Marcus is the florist!" I said, panic rising in my throat. "He requires a massive deposit for the floral arches!"

"Marcus Thorne has a rap sheet for aggravated assault," Chloe countered smoothly. She dropped another piece of paper onto the bed. "And he's the man the police arrested two hours ago for bashing Ethan's head in an alley."

I froze. The room suddenly felt completely devoid of oxygen.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

"Is it?" Chloe swiped her phone screen and held it up for Ethan to see. "Here are texts sent from her number to Marcus. Read them."

Ethan squinted at the glowing screen. As he read, his lips parted in horror.

"Read it out loud," Chloe urged.

"If he tries to leave me for her, make sure he doesn't make it to the airport," Ethan read. His voice shook with mounting fury. "Just hurt him enough to keep him in the city. I'll play the devoted nurse."

"I never wrote that!" I lunged for the phone.

Ethan shoved my hand away. His palm struck my wrist hard enough to leave a stinging red mark. "Don't touch her!"

I stumbled back, clutching my arm. "Ethan, she manufactured those texts! She's framing me!"

"Why would she do that?" Ethan yelled, throwing the bank statement at my chest. The paper fluttered uselessly to the floor. "She’s the woman I love. You're just some sick fanatic who couldn't handle rejection."

"There's more," Chloe said, her voice dripping with fake sorrow. "I spoke to the bartender at the pub down the street from the alley. He gave a sworn statement to the police. He saw a woman matching your exact description handing a thick envelope to Marcus right before Ethan was attacked."

"I was at the bridal boutique!" I screamed, hot tears scalding my cheeks. "I was getting my dress fitted! Call the seamstress. Call Maria!"

"Maria already told the police you canceled your appointment," Chloe replied. Her eyes locked onto mine, cold and triumphant. "You paid her off, didn't you? But you didn't pay the bartender."

"You bribed them," I said, the horrific reality finally settling over me. "You set this whole thing up. You hacked my phone. You faked the transfer."

Ethan laughed. A harsh, bitter sound that held absolutely zero warmth. "Listen to yourself. You orchestrated my assault, and now you're accusing my girlfriend of a massive conspiracy?"

"She is not your girlfriend!" I pointed a trembling finger at Chloe. "She dumped you six years ago! She broke your heart, and I spent years putting it back together!"

Ethan threw his legs over the side of the bed, ignoring the screaming heart monitors.

"Ethan, don't move!" Chloe gasped, reaching for his arm.

He waved her off, standing up on shaky legs. He towered over me, his eyes blazing with absolute, unadulterated hatred.

"You hired a thug to crack my skull," he said, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. "Because you knew I was leaving you. Because you knew I still loved Chloe."

"No," I sobbed, shaking my head frantically. "You love me. You promised me forever."

"I despise you," he said.

The words echoed in the small hospital room. They stripped away the last of my hope, leaving only raw, bleeding shock.

Someone pounded heavily on the wooden door. "Security! Open up!"

"Let them in," Ethan told Chloe.

Chloe walked over and flipped the deadbolt. Two uniformed police officers stepped into the room, their hands resting on their utility belts.

"Serena Davis?" the lead officer asked.

"Yes," I answered, my voice hollow.

"We have a warrant for your arrest," the officer stated, pulling a pair of metal handcuffs from his belt. "You're suspected of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault."

I looked at Ethan. He stood perfectly still, his arm wrapped protectively around Chloe's waist. He watched the officer approach me without a single ounce of pity.

Chloe buried her face in Ethan's chest, playing the terrified victim. But right before the officer grabbed my wrists, she tilted her head slightly.

She mouthed two words at me.

*Game over.*

The cold metal clamped around my skin, snapping shut with a sharp click. But the real trap hadn't just closed on my wrists. It had closed around my entire life.

And the man I would have died for was the one handing over the key.

"You have the right to remain silent," the officer droned, pulling me toward the hallway.

I didn't fight them. My eyes stayed locked on Chloe's smirk until the doorframe cut off my view.

She thought she had won. She thought I would rot in a cell while she stole my future, my fiancé, and my life.

But as the officers marched me into the elevator, I remembered the security cameras outside the bridal boutique. The ones Maria couldn't erase.

Chapter 3

"Hold the elevator!"

Chloe's voice echoed sharply down the sterile corridor.

The taller officer jammed his heavy boot into the metal track, stopping the doors from sliding shut.

Chloe trotted toward us, Ethan leaning heavily against her shoulder. His eyes locked onto mine, burning with an intense, unyielding hostility.

"We forgot to give you the printed bank statements," Chloe said, handing a thick manila folder to the officer.

I yanked against the cold metal cuffs biting into my wrists. "My purse. The front pocket."

"Quiet, ma'am," the officer warned, shifting his grip on my arm.

"No!" I shoved my shoulder against the elevator wall. "My tablet is in that bag. It has our entire life on it. Videos. Untampered, raw videos. Let me prove it."

Ethan scoffed, his upper lip curling in disgust. "More photoshop?"

"Videos cannot be photoshopped like that in real-time, Ethan! Just let them look!"

The second officer sighed, unzipping my confiscated leather tote. He pulled out the silver tablet.

"Passcode?" he asked, tapping the dark glass.

"Zero, eight, two, four," I said, keeping my gaze fixed on Ethan. "August 24th. The day you asked me to move in with you."

Ethan didn't blink. His expression remained utterly blank, a terrifying void where his love for me used to live.

The tablet chimed, the screen glowing brightly in the dim hallway.

"Open the favorites folder," I instructed the cop, my voice shaking. "Play the first video."

The officer tapped the screen. Ethan's own voice instantly filled the quiet space.

*“Serena, stop recording, I’m covered in mud!”*

The cop held the screen up for Ethan to see. On the display, Ethan knelt in a massive puddle outside Mario's Diner. Rain poured over his shoulders, plastering his shirt to his chest. He held a small velvet box in his hands.

*“I don't care about the rain,”* the digital Ethan laughed loudly. *“Just say yes so I can stand up.”*

I watched the real Ethan. His eyes darted across the moving image. A tiny muscle feathered in his jaw.

"Look at your face," I pleaded, stepping closer to the door. "Look at the way you look at me. That isn't fake. You cannot fake that kind of joy."

The officer swiped to the next file. A travel vlog from our winter trip to Aspen.

*“She’s making me eat vegan marshmallows,”* Ethan groaned to the camera, pulling me into his side and kissing my temple. *“Save me.”*

"We were there for a week," I said, tears blurring my vision. "You broke your ski pole on the second day. We spent the rest of the trip by the fire in the cabin."

Ethan stepped closer to the tablet. His brow furrowed deeply, a shadow of doubt finally crossing his features.

Chloe immediately inserted herself between Ethan and the glowing screen.

"Officer, pause that," she ordered, pointing a manicured nail directly at the glass. "Look at the lighting around her hair."

The cop frowned, tilting the tablet. "What about it?"

"It's a deepfake," Chloe stated flatly.

"A what?!" I shrieked, struggling violently against the handcuffs.

"AI-generated video," Chloe explained, turning to Ethan with wide, sympathetic eyes. "I read an article about stalkers using this technology. They take a few real photos from social media and map a face onto an actor's body."

"That is insane!" I yelled, my throat burning. "Who would hire an actor to kneel in a dirty puddle?"

"Someone deeply unwell," Chloe countered smoothly. She snatched the tablet from the officer's hands. "Look at his smile here. It's totally unnatural. Ethan, do you ever smile like that?"

Ethan stared at the paused frame. He reached up and touched his thick white bandage.

"No," Ethan muttered. "It looks forced. Like I'm reading a script."

"Because you aren't!" I screamed. "You were happy! We were happy!"

"And the voice," Chloe continued, tapping the speaker grill. "It sounds metallic. Voice cloning software is incredibly cheap now."

"You are a monster," I spat at her. "You are erasing five years of his life just to steal him back!"

"I am protecting him from a predator," Chloe shot back, her tone sharp and righteous.

She scrolled further down the gallery, stopping on a behind-the-scenes clip from our engagement shoot. We were dancing in a sunlit greenhouse, my arms wrapped around his neck.

"Notice how she never shows the raw files?" Chloe asked the cops, holding the screen up like a piece of damning evidence. "Everything is edited. Filtered. Perfectly staged to look like a romance movie."

"It was a professional photoshoot!" I argued, desperation clawing at my chest. "Of course it's edited! The photographer sent us those clips!"

"It's a stalker's shrine," Ethan interrupted.

His voice cut through the noise like a heavy blade. He snatched the tablet from Chloe and shoved it hard into the officer's chest.

"I've seen enough," Ethan said.

"Ethan, please," I begged, dropping to my knees on the hard linoleum floor. The metal cuffs dug painfully into my skin. "Look at my eyes. You know me. You know my voice."

He looked down at me. The disgust in his gaze was absolute, devoid of even a shred of pity.

"I see a stranger," he said coldly. "A pathetic, delusional stranger who hired a thug to crack my skull open so I couldn't marry the woman I actually love."

"I am your fiancée!"

"Chloe is my fiancée," he snarled.

My heart stopped beating. The fluorescent lights overhead seemed to flicker and dim.

"What?" I choked out.

Chloe held up her left hand. A massive, glittering diamond rested on her ring finger.

It wasn't my ring. It was entirely new.

"He asked me this morning," Chloe smiled, her eyes gleaming with wicked, undeniable victory. "Right before you sent your goon to kill him."

"You're engaged?" The words tasted like ash on my tongue.

"Take her away," Ethan ordered the police, turning his back to me entirely. "I want a restraining order filed by tonight."

The taller officer hauled me to my feet by my armpits.

"You're making a mistake!" I thrashed against the cop's grip, my sneakers skidding on the floor. "She's lying to you! She's stealing your life!"

Ethan ignored me. He wrapped his arms tightly around Chloe's waist, burying his face in her hair.

"I love you," I heard him whisper to her.

The officer shoved me backward into the elevator car.

"Watch your head," the cop grunted, pressing the lobby button on the panel.

The metal doors began to slide shut.

Through the narrowing gap, I saw Chloe look over Ethan's shoulder. Her lips curled into a terrifying smirk. She mouthed a single, silent word at me.

*Mine.*

The doors slammed together, sealing me inside the metal box.

The officers stood in complete silence as the elevator descended. My tablet sat tucked under the cop's arm, holding all the beautiful memories Ethan had just violently discarded.

He really believed her. He genuinely thought I was a violent, obsessive stranger who manipulated digital files to trap him.

I slumped against the handrail, my chest heaving as silent tears tracked down my face.

The elevator dinged at the ground floor.

The doors opened to a crowded, chaotic hospital lobby.

"Keep walking," the officer commanded, nudging my shoulder forward.

We marched through the sliding glass doors into the freezing night air. A police cruiser idled at the curb, its red and blue lights painting the concrete in harsh strokes.

The cop opened the back door and pushed my head down to clear the frame.

As I slid onto the hard plastic seat, a bright flash erupted from the sidewalk.

A man stood under the flickering streetlamp, lowering a heavy camera with a long telephoto lens. He wore a dark hoodie pulled low over his brow, obscuring his face.

He didn't run. He just smiled, tapping his camera twice before melting entirely into the shadows.

He had been waiting for me.
