Chapter 1 of My Ex-Mate Tried Claiming Me After Rejecting Me

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday morning.

I know because I was staring at the clock on the healer's wall when the pain hit. I'd come to collect Maria's arranged wolfsbane refill—the draughts that let me sleep through the nights when the denied bond burned worst. The healer's quarters were supposed to be empty. They weren't.

Declan had his canines buried in Laila's neck.

She arched beneath him on the examination table, her fingers twisted in his hair, a moan of completion spilling from her lips. The mark was fresh—blood bright against her pale throat, already beginning to seal. His wolf's claim. The bond I'd waited five years to receive.

The phantom pain detonated across my own mark-site like someone had pressed a hot iron to my neck. I gripped the doorframe. My knees buckled. Inside my chest, my wolf released a thin, broken howl that only I could hear.

Declan's eyes found mine over Laila's shoulder.

No surprise. No guilt. Just flat, cold calculation.

He'd known I was coming. Maria had mentioned the refill appointment yesterday at breakfast. He'd chosen this moment. This room. This audience of one.

My mind went crystalline. The fog of five years lifted all at once.

He was never broken. The bond was never incomplete. His wolf never rejected me.

He simply chose someone else.

"Cameron." His voice was steady. He didn't pull away from Laila. "This doesn't concern you."

I couldn't speak. My throat had closed. The pain in my mark-site was spreading—down my spine, into my ribs, a cold hollow ache that felt like something vital was being scooped out of me.

Laila turned her head just enough to meet my eyes. Her expression wasn't triumphant. It was satisfied. Like she'd been waiting for this moment as long as I had.

"You should go," Declan said. Still calm. Still in control. "We'll talk later."

Later. As if this was a scheduling conflict.

I released the doorframe. My fingers were numb. I walked backward three steps, then turned and left.

Behind me, I heard Laila laugh softly.

---

I didn't go back to the pack house. I went straight to the great hall.

The afternoon patrol was assembled—two dozen warriors in formation, waiting for Declan's briefing. They turned when I entered. I walked to the center of the hall and stopped.

"Send for Alpha Declan," I said to the nearest Delta. My voice came out level. Steady. "Tell him Cameron Bradley requests his presence before the pack."

The Delta hesitated. "Luna, if this is a private matter—"

"It's not private," I said. "Send for him now."

The title stung. Luna. I'd never been Luna. I'd been a placeholder with a title and no mark.

Declan arrived within minutes. Laila was with him. Her neck was bandaged, but the edges of the fresh mark were visible above the gauze. She stayed two steps behind him—the perfect picture of a chosen mate who knew her place.

Declan's expression was irritated, not concerned. "Cameron. What's this about?"

I looked at him. At the male I'd given five years to. The male who told me the bond wasn't ready, his wolf wasn't ready, I needed to be patient. The male who held me at night and whispered that he wanted to mark me but couldn't, not yet, not until the Moon Goddess completed what she'd started.

Every word had been a lie.

"Tell them," I said quietly. "Tell them the truth."

His jaw tightened. "This isn't the time."

"Tell them," I repeated, "why you never marked me."

Silence. The warriors shifted. No one looked away.

Declan's eyes went hard. "You're embarrassing yourself."

"Then end the embarrassment," I said. "Speak the rejection vow."

His hand moved—fast, brutal. He shoved me. I hit the stone floor on my side, the impact cracking through my ribs. Pain flared hot and immediate.

He stepped in front of Laila. Shielding her. Protecting his chosen mate from his fated one.

"I, Declan, Alpha of Ironveil," he said, voice ringing through the hall, "reject you, Cameron Bradley, as my mate."

The words struck like a physical blow.

My mark-site went cold. Then hollow. Then nothing. Inside my chest, my wolf collapsed—not a howl this time, just a sudden, terrible silence. Like a candle pinched out.

I lay on the floor for three seconds. The stone was cool against my cheek. I could see the boots of the nearest warrior. No one moved. No one spoke.

I pushed myself up. My hands were shaking, but I got to my feet.

"I accept," I said. My voice didn't waver. "The bond is severed."

I looked at Declan one last time. At Laila behind him, her hand on his arm. At the warriors who had watched and done nothing.

Then I walked out.

Past the silent witnesses. Past Laila's satisfied smile. Past the life I'd built in a pack that was never mine.

I didn't look back.

---

The river bridge marked Ironveil's border. I stopped in the center.

Declan's patrol wolves were in the tree line. I could smell them—three, maybe four. Watching. Reporting back.

I reached under my collar and pulled out the ceremonial pendant. Silver, etched with Ironveil's crest. Declan had given it to me the day I moved into pack territory. "Wear it always," he'd said. "So everyone knows you're mine."

I held it over the current.

The water was fast here. Deep. It would take the pendant downstream, into unclaimed territory, where no pack's scent could follow.

I opened my fingers.

The pendant dropped. The river took it immediately—a brief flash of silver, then gone.

I crossed the bridge. My feet hit neutral ground. I kept walking.

Behind me, in the shadows, I felt Declan's presence. Watching. Waiting.

Let him wait.

I was done.
