Chapter 2
After I heard wha he said,
I rushed out of the ward and went straight upstairs.
Before entering the ward, I saw Baldwin's tall figure from a distance. He is 6.3 foot. The ward seemed too small for him, and he couldn't even stand upright.
He turned his face and looked at the woman beside him with gentle eyes.
The woman had her hair tied up, with loose strands falling on both sides of her cheeks, depicting her gentle and graceful appearance.
The two people nervously surrounded a little boy, afraid that he might bump into something.
The boy holds a toy in one hand and a dessert in the other, looking like the happiest child in the world.
But at this moment, his happiness deeply made my heart ache.
My daughter, such a little child, was staying in the intensive care unit. She might lose her life at any time.
She was still eagerly hoping that her father could come and see her.
Hannah probably never imagined that her father failed to protect her. At this moment, he was accompanying another child and ignoring her.
I pushed open the half-closed door.
The harmonious atmosphere suddenly froze with my arrival.
Baldwin's eyebrows furrowed, clearly displeased with my appearance.
"Why did you come here suddenly? I thought you were on a business trip."
Yes, as the project manager, I was supposed to be on-site to follow up.
The phone call from my daughter's teacher made me completely collapse, and I flew back from Boston.
But Baldwin was there in the kindergarten.
He was right beside our daughter.
But he couldn't hear her cry for help, only the women and her son.
When he hurriedly brought the boy to the hospital, our daughter was behind him, gradually losing her breath.
If it weren't for Charles's keen perception of Hannah's abnormality, I would never see my daughter again!
"What are you doing here on earth?" Since I said nothing, Baldwin's face became even gloomier. "We can talk about it later at home, if you have something to tell me."
Baldwin tugged at my sleeve, trying to take me out of the ward.
I didn't want to embarrass him in front of others, so I followed him out.
I didn't expect to be stopped by a soft voice, before I turned around.
"You must be Mrs. Duncan. Please don't get us wrong. Today, my son suddenly had a heart attack. Mr. Gardner timely sent him to the hospital."
The words were spoken to me, but her affectionate eyes were clearly fixed on Baldwin.
I took a deep breath and tried my best to stay calm. There was nothing more important than letting my daughter see her father.
I held onto Baldwin and explained the situation concisely, "Hannah had a seizure, and is currently in the intensive care unit. She wants to see you, and she has been calling for her dad."
Doubt, worry, and many other emotions flashed quickly in Baldwin's eyes.
The next second, he turned his head to the woman beside him and asked, 'Siyu, how is Hannah doing in class today?'
She is Sylvia!
Baldwin's first love that he has been thinking about for many years.
I subconsciously let go and took a few steps back.
So, Baldwin, does he think I would deceive him about Hannah's safety?
Sylvia seemed to have a hard time speaking, hesitated for a while, "Mrs. McDowell, have you misunderstood? Maybe you have listened to rumors? Hannah was fine in kindergarten before we came to the hospital."
Then, she looked at Baldwin meaningfully.
Baldwin realized and his tone became colder, "Mia, is this interesting to you? Follow me to the hospital, go back immediately, don't embarrass yourself here."
He pulled my sleeve, trying to drive me out of the ward.
I quickly grabbed his hand and begged bitterly, "Hannah is downstairs. She says she's in pain, and wants to see her dad.
You just go down and see her once. I will never interfere with whatever you want to do, even if you want a divorce. But now your daughter needs you..."
Baldwin, as if I had touched a sore spot, showed no mercy and pushed me to the ground directly.
I struggled to get up.
The door closed in front of me.
Chapter 3
I knelt in front of the door, begging Baldwin to go and see our daughter.
I promised Hannah that I would bring her father back to see her. I couldn't bear to see the disappointment on her face.
But my pleas had no effect. Baldwin called the security guards.
What was even more despairing was that Charles told me that Hannah was in danger.
I broke free from the security guards and ran downstairs.
The operation was not successful. The doctor issued a critical condition notice. My hands trembled as I took it, and my eyes instantly blurred.
I signed the notice and turned around to run upstairs.
Hannah was waiting for us. I must bring her father to her.
Luckily, the door was open.
I saw Baldwin in the crowd at a glance.
I went up and grabbed his clothes, "Baldwin, the doctor has given Hannah a critical illness notice. Go and see her, okay?"
I thought that by now, even if Baldwin didn't believe what I said, he would be willing to go along.
But he just coldly pulled back his clothes; his brows filled with lingering annoyance and impatience, "Stop making a fuss! Can't you see how urgent the situation is now?"
"Brandon has congenital heart disease. He suddenly had an attack. You're also a mother. Can't you empathize?"
He paused, seeming to feel that his tone was too harsh, "Darling, I'll explain it to you when we get home. Don't be suspicious. I haven't done anything wrong."
After speaking, he didn't even turn his head and went to comfort the crying Sylvia by the bedside.
I numbly watched this absurd scene, my heart aching.
"Baldwin, is it that Hannah and I can only always be behind Sylvia and Brandon?
Even if our daughter is on the verge of death."
Chapter 4
I returned to the operating room in a daze.
When I saw Hannah again, she couldn't even lift her hands.
She was still so obedient. Tears soaked the pillow without saying a word of discomfort to me.
Her voice was hoarse, and she said to me weakly, "Mom... I'm so tired... I want to sleep.
Mom... Hannah loves you..."
"No, don't sleep, Hannah." I tightly held my daughter's little hand, tears uncontrollably streaming down my face, "Don't you want to see Dad? Dad is on his way, Hannah. Wait a little longer before sleeping, okay?"
"Dad... I..."
Before she could finish, Hannah's hand dropped, and she lost her last breath.
My brain went blank, and my heart felt like it was being violently hammered, the pain spreading throughout my body.
In a daze, I seemed to hear the familiar voice of Baldwin outside the door, "Fortunately, everything is fine. Don't worry too much. Brandon is so strong. He will definitely grow up safe and sound."
My daughter didn't see her father for the last time until the end of her life.
She left this world with eternal regret.
And her father blessed another little boy to grow up safely.
But my daughter would not grow up.
