Chapter 4
The screen on the wall suddenly lit up.
Wendy appeared quite pleased as she looked at me provocatively on the screen.
“Rachel, how’s your holiday? I’m so jealous of you! I wasn’t so lucky because I had to deliver water to those pitiful, low-class people under the hot sun.”
Her words were full of disdain. I closed my eyes because I did not want to look at her face.
However, she grew more excited and kept showing off.
“When I become a famous streamer, I’ll buy you a meal! After all, you’ve helped me immensely.”
Smugness and excitement gripped her.
I sneered and said, “Wendy, the things you stole from others will never be yours.”
Wendy laughed pretentiously as if she had heard the most hilarious joke ever. “Rachel, you’re still unwilling to give in! Did I ever steal anything from you? How ridiculous! If a trash woman like you hadn’t snatched my brother away, I would have never targeted you!”
I frowned and finally realized the truth. At that moment, I recalled all the strangeness in my past.
Wendy hid in her room the first time I went to Max’s house. It gave Max’s parents a difficult time. They said, “She’s willful.”
I believed them. After that, I always bought Wendy gifts whenever I went shopping just to ease our relationship.
But she cut them into pieces and threw them into the trash.
Whenever I met with Max’s friends, I could always feel some hostility from them. It was confusing for me.
“Wendy, this is your last warning. If you keep using that weird trick, I’ll make sure you suffer,” I said seriously.
But she did not listen to me. She purposely fished her phone out in front of me and made a call.
She sounded very coy. “Max, I’m so mad! I told Rachel that I wanted to buy her a meal. But she warned me that she’ll give me a hard time…”
Her lies were full of loopholes. But Max used a gentle and doting tone with her that I had never heard before.
“It’s okay, Wendy. When that woman loses her value, I’ll sell her to the people in the mountains to let you vent your anger.”
Hearing that, my mind went blank. Although I had long known what kind of person Max was, I still felt bitter when I listened to his wicked and outlandish words.
I clenched my fist, and my fingernails dug into my palms, but I felt no pain.
After all, nothing could be as excruciating as the pain that had broken my heart.
Wendy smirked. “Did you see? My brother thinks you’re nothing compared to me!”
Then, the screen turned off before a deep silence enveloped me.
I clenched my fists and pushed down my humiliation. After that, I said something to the GPS alarm disguised as a diamond bracelet.
“Come and pick me up.”
Somebody secretly rescued me.
The next day, I would be boarding a plane to the South Pole. I rushed toward the airport.
When Max woke up the next day, he grew anxious, as if something was about to get out of control. But he could not recall what it was.
He carried some breakfast and opened the door to the basement. His heart sank when he realized that I was gone.
When my phone rang, I had already completed the boarding procedures. I did not block his number.
Instead, I happily watched as he repeatedly called me. I could imagine how anxious he was.
When I reached my destination, I wasted no time and video-called Wendy.
“Hi! Surprise! Can you guess where I am?”
Wendy felt like she was freezing and was about to faint.
