My Boyfriend Let His Mistress Ruin My Sister Summary
Chapter 1 of My Boyfriend Let His Mistress Ruin My Sister
The morning air was crisp when I stepped out of my Manhattan apartment. I had my coffee in one hand and my legal brief in the other.
Then three people stepped out of a black SUV.
A woman with a clipboard and two heavy-set men blocked my path.
"Macie Silva?" the woman said. Her smile was fake and tight. "You’re coming with us. You have a legal obligation under the broadcast release you signed."
"I didn't sign anything," I said. I took a step back, reaching for my phone.
One of the men grabbed my elbow. His grip was like iron. "Don't make a scene, Miss Silva. Get in the car."
Before I could shout, they shoved me into the back seat. The door slammed shut.
Twenty minutes later, they dragged me through a backstage door into Manhattan Studio 4. Bright halogen lights blinded me. A giant banner hung from the ceiling: *The Reckoning*.
I blinked and took in the room. Three hundred people sat in tiered seats. Cameras hovered on long metal cranes.
At the center desk sat Kenna Hoffman, dressed in a pastel pink blazer, smiling softly at the teleprompter. And standing center-stage in a sharp navy suit was Zane Morrison.
My ex-boyfriend of eight years. The man who had helped ruin my life.
"We're live in three, two..." the floor manager shouted.
Kenna turned to the main camera. Her voice was sweet, dripping with fake warmth. "Welcome to *The Reckoning*. Today, we create a space for honest emotional accountability. We have a heartbroken man who only wants answers. Zane, the floor is yours."
Zane stepped forward. He lowered his head, then looked up with glistening eyes. A single tear rolled down his cheek. He had always practiced that in the mirror.
"I loved Macie for eight years," Zane said, his voice cracking with emotion. "I built an empire for her. I gave her my home, my money, my heart. And three years ago, she vanished in the middle of the night. She ghosted me."
A murmur ran through the audience.
"I tried to understand," Zane choked out. "Then I found out the truth. She was seeing other men. Multiple men. She took everything I gave her, used me, and walked away without a word."
Applause rippled through the studio. Above us, the live chat flashed across a massive monitor.
*What a monster!*
*Poor Zane!*
*Kenna, destroy her!*
I sat across from him in the guest chair. My hands rested flat in my lap. I did not move. I did not blink. My stomach burned, but my face was stone.
Kenna picked up a handheld microphone and walked over to me. She extended it with a sweet, condescending tilt of her head.
"Macie, sweetie," Kenna cooed. "We invite you to respond with grace. Clear your conscience. Tell the world why you broke such a good man."
It was a classic trap. If I cried, I was weak. If I yelled, I was crazy.
I pushed the microphone down with one finger.
I unzipped my purse. I pulled out a small black digital recorder and set it on the glass table with a quiet *click*.
Then, I looked straight into the red light of Camera One. I ignored Zane completely.
"Zane is telling the truth about one thing," I said. My voice was calm and steady. It cut through the studio speakers like a knife. "I did leave three years ago without an explanation."
The room fell dead silent.
"Do you want to know why?" I asked the lens.
In the corner of the studio monitor, the viewership counter began to climb. Five million. Seven million.
I turned my head and looked Zane in the eye.
"Do you remember the Hampton Shores Charity Gala?" I asked him. "Four years ago."
Zane’s fake, sorrowful smile froze. His throat bobbed.
"You told me to wait by the terrace," I continued evenly. "You said you had to handle a quick business issue with Kenna. You left me alone for two hours."
Kenna shifted on her heels, her knuckles whitening around her clipboard.
"Two men cornered me in the back service hallway," I said. "Two men from Kenna’s private payroll. They told me I was asking too many questions about who Zane slept with."
Gasps echoed through the audience.
"They wanted to make sure I learned my place," I said.
I reached up with steady hands. I unbuttoned the top two buttons of my silk shirt. I pulled the fabric aside, exposing my left collarbone under the harsh stage lights.
There, stamped deep into my skin, was a round, puckered burn. It was ugly. It was unmistakable.
A cigarette burn.
The live chat on the screen froze for three whole seconds.
Then it exploded. Comments flew past so fast they were a blur. The viewer count shot straight to fifteen million.
Kenna’s smile cracked. She looked at the control booth in panic, then forced a high, nervous laugh.
"Well... passions run high in relationships," Kenna stammered, desperate to regain control. "Memories get twisted. But let’s look at Zane’s true heart. His undeniable proof of love."
Kenna clapped her hands twice.
A backstage assistant wearing white cotton gloves wheeled out an easel. A large canvas sat upon it, covered in thick black velvet.
Zane puffed out his chest. He straightened his tie, looking relieved. He thought this grand gesture would save him, just like it always did.
"I spent six months tracking this down in Paris, Macie," Zane said, speaking to the cameras again. "A custom oil commission to prove my devotion. I kept it safe for you."
The assistant whipped the velvet away.
The audience sighed in admiration at the sweeping, vibrant oil painting. Zane stood tall, flashing his winning grin.
I looked at the canvas. I looked at the brushstrokes, the signature in the corner, and the cheap varnish catching the glare of the lights.
A cold smile touched my lips.
I reached back into my bag.
