Chapter 1 of My Beta Mate Framed Me as a Rogue

The bond broke at 10:14 p.m. on the night of my Come of Age Ceremony.

I know the exact time because I was staring at the ceremonial clock tower when Troy stepped onto the platform. My wolf had been awake for four seconds. Four seconds of her voice whispering *Mate* in a tone I'd never heard before—certain, joyful, like she'd been waiting her whole dormant life to say that one word. Troy's woodsmoke scent rolled over me in waves, and my bones hummed with recognition.

Then he opened his mouth.

"I, Troy Foxworth, son of Beta Gerald Foxworth of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Charlotte Youngblood, as my mate."

Every word landed in the correct formal order. I'd memorized the rejection vow years ago during pack law study, the same way I'd memorized every other ceremony structure—not out of fear, just thoroughness. Hearing it now, I recognized each phrase before he finished speaking it. That made it worse somehow. The familiarity.

The bond snapped.

It felt like a white-hot wire pulled taut through my sternum and then cut. The heat went first—a rush of cold that started at my mark point and spread through my chest cavity. Then the emptiness. My wolf, who had been awake and certain four seconds ago, went dark. Not silent. Dark. Like someone had shut a door in an empty room and walked away.

I stood on the ceremonial platform in front of three hundred wolves. The Silverfang Alpha was watching from his seat. The elders lined the stone circle. My father stood in the back row, his face carefully blank. I pressed two fingers to the inside of my left wrist and counted my pulse. One. Two. Three. The rhythm was there. I was still alive.

Troy didn't look at me. He turned—still on the platform, still under the ceremonial moon—and walked directly to Destiny Chapman.

She was wearing a white dress. I noticed that. Not the traditional ceremonial gray, but white, like she'd known. Like she'd planned for this exact moment. Troy pulled her onto the platform, tilted her head to the side, and marked her. Right there. On the same stone where he'd just severed my bond.

Destiny's eyes found mine over his shoulder. She smiled. It wasn't a big smile—just a small curve at the corner of her mouth, the kind of expression you'd give a friend across a crowded room when you wanted to share a private joke. Except the joke was me.

I kept my fingers on my wrist. Four. Five. Six.

The Alpha rose from his seat. His voice carried across the ceremonial grounds without effort. "Charlotte Youngblood, by the authority of the Silverfang Pack and in acknowledgment of your... status... you are hereby demoted to Omega rank, effective immediately."

Status. He meant wolfless. He meant rejected. He meant standing on this platform with a broken bond and a silent wolf while my former mate marked another woman ten feet away.

I didn't cry. I counted to ten, dropped my hand from my wrist, and walked off the platform. The crowd parted. No one met my eyes. I heard whispers—not the words, just the sound of them, like wind through dry leaves.

I made it to the edge of the ceremonial grounds before Destiny's voice rang out behind me.

"Charlotte, wait!"

I stopped. Turned. She was walking toward me with that same small smile, Troy a half-step behind her. She reached out and touched my shoulder—a gesture that would look, to anyone watching, like concern. Like friendship.

"I know this is hard," she said quietly. Her voice was warm. Practiced. "But the pack still needs you. You'll start in the pack house kitchens tomorrow morning. Six a.m. I'll make sure you have everything you need."

The kitchens. Not the archives, where I'd been training. Not the healer's wing, where I had some skill. The kitchens. A position chosen specifically because she knew—because she'd spent months as my closest friend and knew exactly—that I was a competent but unremarkable cook. That the assignment would humiliate without giving me any ground to stand on.

I looked at her hand on my shoulder. At Troy standing behind her, his mark fresh on her neck. At the crowd still watching from the ceremonial grounds.

"Six a.m.," I said. "Understood."

I turned and walked. My legs worked. My pulse stayed steady. I made it across the pack grounds, past the training fields, to the Omega quarters—a low building I'd never entered before tonight. The door was unlocked. Inside, the room was small and bare: a cot, a chair, a single window.

I sat on the floor.

Not the cot. The floor. I pulled a piece of paper from my pocket—something I'd been carrying for weeks, a list of ceremonial tasks I'd been checking off in preparation for tonight—and turned it over. The back was blank.

I started writing.

*Destiny: kitchen assignment, 10:47 p.m., ceremonial grounds. Witnesses: 200+. Tone: performed concern. Touch: shoulder, lasted 4 seconds.*

*Troy: marked Destiny on platform. Time: 10:16 p.m. Location: same stone as rejection. No hesitation.*

*Bond: severed 10:14 p.m. Wolf: dormant. Status: Omega.*

The door opened. I didn't look up. Two sets of boots entered—one heavy, one light. Maia and Avani.

Maia crouched in front of me. "I never trusted her," she said. No preamble. No comfort. Just the statement, flat and direct. "I'm going to prove it."

Avani said nothing. She sat down on the floor beside me, her shoulder touching mine. She didn't ask if I was okay. She just stayed.

I looked at Maia. At the warrior blade on her hip and the tight set of her jaw. At Avani, whose hand was resting near her own blade hilt like she was suppressing the urge to use it.

"Keep watching Troy," I said. My voice came out steady. "If he's lying about this, he's lying about other things."

Maia's eyes narrowed. "What other things?"

I pressed my fingers to my wrist again. Seven. Eight. Nine.

"I don't know yet," I said. "But I'm going to find out."
