Chapter 1
Lucy's POV
“Lucy! You have to come with me now!” Layla yelled at me as we heard gunshots outside the house. The rogue war was at its peak, during the times. Rival packs invaded every now and then, so we had to defend ourselves.
“I think staying inside will be the best option.” I said to her. I was scared to go outside for many reasons.
First, my alpha, Alpha Fabian, was not around. As his Luna, I had to make sure the affairs of the estate were always kept in order.
Second, when the rival packs invaded, they never made it into the estate. The estate was a safer zone, as such, we were safer inside than outside.
“Are you crazy?! Don't you hear the gunshots and roars? They're louder now, more than ever, meaning they have found a way to infiltrate. We better find our way out of this place if not you and your unborn child will not see daylight.” She explained.
Her words caused me to panic. I was five months pregnant for the next alpha. I cared about my baby more than I did myself. I was a fierce Luna, but ever since I found out I was carrying another life inside me, I feared everything. No for myself, but for him, who was in me.
“Let's go then!” I said to her and we both ran out of the estate.
It was surprising to see Layla be this caring and concerned for my safety. I would swear it wasn't her.
Layla was Alpha Fabian's ex Luna. She abandoned him when he was in a critical condition and everyone thought he was going to die.
When Alpha Fabian became well, we discovered we were mates and we got married. Few years later, she came back to take her place, but I guess it was too late. I was already with him, plus the fact that I was pregnant for him.
She had grown to hate me like I was a disease. She never did anything good for me and always looked for the best ways to berate me. Alpha Fabian never really said anything about her negative behaviors towards me. He even brought her to live in the estate with her.
This was why her sudden concern for me felt off. It was very unlike her.
She led me through the tunnel, out of the estate and into the woods.
It was raining very heavily, with a non stop thread of lightning strikes.
“Follow me!” She yelled as she went deeper into the woods. “I don't think running blind like this is the best idea. Why don't we wait here and call on Alpha Fabian and the guards?” I suggested.
“We are still too close to the rival armies. They will catch up and kill us.” She told me. Anytime she talked about them killing us, I feared for my baby who was yet to feel the air of the real world and see his mother's face. I followed her, just to save his life.
It seemed everything was going well and we were free from the rogue soldiers because the gunshots and roars began to fade from our ears.
However, we could not see through the darkness and the deep pit stationed in the woods wasn't observed.
Layla first fell into the pit, then I did. I saw her fall, but was too fast and too close to her to stop in time.
“Oh my God!” I yelled out.
“We are stuck!”
The heavy rain was beating us and surface water from all directions found their way into the same pit, so the water built up slowly.
When we fell in, the water was at knee level.
We tried climbing out, but it was not possible. The pit was so big and the walls were flat.
“How do we get out of here?!” She asked me. “You're the one more versatile and without a baby in your womb. You should figure something out.” I said to her.
She was basically as clueless as I was, so we had to take the last option. I mind linked Alpha Fabian and gave him a hint of where we were and that we were in danger.
We now had to wait for him to show up and save us. He was our only hope.
It took many minutes before he arrived. By then, the water was already reaching our necks.
Hearing us scream, he easily spotted us in the thick woods.
“What the hell happened here?!” He was shocked when he saw us and the condition we were in.
“We were trying to get away from the rival soldiers and we fell.” Layla said.
“Please help us out!” I said to him and I stretched my hands to him. The water was an inch away from my mouth.
“Help me!” Layla shouted too. “I have been injured.” She added, acting like she was having a panic attack.
I knew she wasn't telling the truth. She never said anything about a wound when we entered and she definitely did not have any panic attacks. She was definitely fine until he showed up.
Hearing this, he went to her and helped her up. “You are a better swimmer, you can help yourself.” My Alpha said to me, pushing my fingers violently and this causing them to break when I touched him. He didn't even care that I was pregnant. I saw him carry Layla and run off, ignoring my screams. Soon, the water covered me up and I could not find my way out.
I felt my life drain out of me as I drowned to the bottom of the pit and the last thing I saw with my living eyes was my husband running, choosing his ex mate over him and our unborn child, while leaving me behind to die.
Chapter 2
Lucy's POV
I struggled as hard as I could, fighting for my life, but the water was just too much for me. I could not make it.
“Why don't I keep you here and go get Lucy?” Alpha Fabian asked Layla. “No. Please take me to a hospital! You said she could swim right? She should be able to get out and join us soon.” Layla revolted, causing Alpha Fabian to carry her out.
If I could swim, I could not be in the water until Alpha Fabian came for us. I guess she forgot this, or she just didn't care after all.
Maybe, just maybe, if she had let him come back for me, the little energy that was left in me would be able to suck the life back into my body.
Waking up, I wasn't myself again. I could not feel my wolf, or the rain, or my water or most shocking of all, my baby.
I was about to freak out, when I turned and saw my body at the bottom of the pit. That was when I realized I had died and my baby, whom I ran away to protect in the first place, had died too.
I tried touching my body, but I could not. I was so confused, but I was drawn to my mate and Layla. I guess life wanted to show me the truth I was ignorant of before leaving for the after life.
My soul was restless, watching them as they moved.
Alpha Fabian took Layla to the hospital because she insisted that she had to be checked urgently, before anything else.
Half an hour later, the rescue team that Alpha Fabian had called to get me reached back to him in the hospital. “Alpha. We have searched the pit through and through, but her body can not be found.” The leader of the team told him.
“We need you here,” he added.
“What importance will my presence make? Can I magically know where she is?” He barked at them.
“If you can't find her, then stop looking.” He added.
“But Alpha. We can't just stop.” The leader said to him. “I said if she can't be found, then stop!” He said angrily.
The team leader knew better than to drag words with him.
They nodded and went back. No one had the right or power to object to the fierce Alpha. They could only heed to whatever he said.
I stood there, with my legs unable to touch the ground, watching Alpha Fabian coldly dismiss them, giving up on me like I was not important at all.
We had been together for four years and pregnant his child, but this was what I got. Even if it were a pet, it would be treated with more concern. I began to see how he really felt about me.
Alpha Fabian was remorseless. He sat before Layla and held her hands.
“Please don't leave me.” She said to him. “don't go.”
“I am not going anywhere. I will be here with you.” He said to her.
I could see the love in their eyes. I had the feeling something was still going on between them, but I never wanted to believe he actually did. Now, it was clear to me, when they looked at themselves and he then kissed her on the lips.
My heart was heavy and I wanted to tear her apart, but I could not do anything because I was now only a ghost, who could watch, but not do.
The only thing I could do now was to reflect on the past, the loveless life I shared with Alpha Fabian.
We had a good life when we got married, but it all ended when she came back. He began to resent me as he got closer to her all over again.
He was indifferent to the things that concerned me. Everything became worse when I discovered I was pregnant.
I once got into a frenzy with Layla.
“I carry your child in me, but you still treat me with disregard.” I reminded Layla. “Well, if you didn't have that thing in you, I would have a better shot at taking back my position by the Alpha's side.” She replied to me.
“Honestly, I wish you would just die! You and that thing inside you!” She said to me.
I could not have her talking to me like that, so I slapped her.
“Did you just slap me?!” She asked with a raging voice. “I have grown tired of your insolence in this house. I will do it again if you utter any foul statement against my child.” I said to her angrily.
“You had the mind to put your filthy hands on me, the alpha must hear this when he gets back!” She replied to me before walking out on me.
That night, she didn't even let my husband step into the house when she told on me.
“What the hell did you do to Layla?!” He said to me as he entered our bedroom.”
Before I could tell him my side of the story, he slapped me hard and I fell to the bed.
Layla, who was standing by the door, entered the bedroom. “Deal with her! Show her that she can't treat me any how she likes in this house.” She said to my husband, further fueling his anger.
He got on me and began to pound me to his heart content. I was left with nothing else, but tears.
That night, he spent it with her. I did not like to think about what they did, because it broke my heart.
I would be terribly sick and unable to move from the bed, but he would be indifferent towards me. Even when I was pregnant.
“Get yourself together, don't die on my bed.” He always always said. “Do it somewhere else.” I guess his inner desire was finally fulfilled.
At the same time, if Layla showed any sign that she wasn't fine, even the slightest headache, he would as much as come home from a long trip, just to make sure she was fine.
As I floated, crying, but unable to release tears, a thought came to my head. Why did this happen today? How was there a magical pit there, connected to the river?
Did Layla's wish for my death coincidentally happen the day she tried to look out for me, or was it planned all along? Is there more to this than I currently knew?
