Chapter 1 of My Alpha Used Wolfsbane to Reject Me

I woke up to silence.

Not the ordinary quiet of early morning, before the pack house stirs and the kitchen fills with coffee smells and someone's boots scraping the back steps. This was different. This was the silence inside my own chest—where, for five years, there had always been something warm and alive and pulling.

Trenton's scent. Cedar and storm. The mate bond's low, constant hum, like a second heartbeat I'd grown so used to I forgot it wasn't mine.

Gone.

I sat on the edge of my bed and pressed both hands flat against my sternum. Nothing. No pull. No warmth. No wolf rising to the surface when I reached for her. I tried the mind-link and hit a wall—smooth, cold, total. Like pressing my palm against concrete and expecting a door.

I sat there for a long time, cataloguing the emptiness the way you'd catalogue damage after a storm. Methodically. One thing at a time.

No bond-pull. No wolf. No Trenton.

The strangest part was how still I was. I kept waiting for the agony to hit—the soul-rending, bone-deep pain every rejected wolf described, the kind that made grown Alphas collapse and beg. I waited for it the way you brace for a wave you can see coming.

It never came.

The door opened. My mother walked in.

Ruthie Bennett has never been a woman who tiptoes. She was Gamma of the Ironwood Pack for eleven years before she retired, and she still moves like someone who expects the room to get out of her way. But she crossed to my bed slowly, and that alone told me everything.

She was holding a folder.

She sat beside me and set it on the mattress between us. Her hands were steady—they're always steady—but I watched her jaw work once before she spoke.

"Wolfsbane derivative," she said. "Concentrated. The pack healers synthesized it. They put it in your drink at the banquet."

I looked at the folder. The top page had the Silverfang elder seal on it. Formal rejection documents, filed the previous night while I was unconscious.

"He rejected me while I was out." I said it flat, not a question.

"Before the elders. Witnessed and recorded." Her voice was military-crisp, the tone she used when fury was too large to fit inside ordinary words. "The Mate Ceremony for him and Juliana Hansen is scheduled for next week."

Juliana. I turned the name over. Trenton's childhood friend. The woman who had apparently returned with a story about her wolf dying, about needing his mark to survive. I'd heard whispers at the banquet—I'd told myself it was nothing.

Mom's hand came up and cupped my face. Her thumb moved once across my cheekbone.

"You will survive this," she said quietly. "And then you will make them wish you hadn't."

I covered her hand with mine and held it there for a moment.

Then I picked up the folder and started reading.

---

Here is what I expected to feel, reading those pages: grief. Rage. The mate-bond's death-throes tearing through me from the inside.

Here is what I actually felt: clarity.

It was like someone had lifted a filter I didn't know I was seeing through. Five years of the bond's warm, rose-tinted haze—gone. And in its place, cold, clean, surgical precision.

I saw Trenton clearly for the first time. Not the Alpha who'd held me in the dark and promised the mark was coming, just not yet, just a little longer. The man who had chosen to believe a convenient lie over five years of evidence. Who had drugged his own mate rather than face her while she was conscious and capable of making him look at what he was doing.

He needed me silent. That told me everything about how loud my presence had always been to his guilt.

They had given me a weapon and called it punishment. I almost smiled.

---

The Mate Ceremony was extravagant. Of course it was.

Flowers everywhere. Candles. The entire Silverfang pack assembled in the great hall, dressed and expectant. Juliana in white, luminous, playing the role of beloved Luna with the practiced ease of someone who had rehearsed it for years.

Every wolf in that room expected me to be absent. Or destroyed. Or both.

I wore black. Simple, clean, perfect.

Mom stood beside me near the back, spine straight, expression carved from stone. I felt a few stares land on us and slide away, uncertain.

When the ceremony reached the bond-scent presentation—the moment the new Luna's scent was supposed to wash over the pack and confirm the sacred pairing—I leaned toward the she-wolf standing to my left. Nora Vance, a warrior I'd known for years.

"Interesting," I said, conversationally. "No bond-marker in her scent."

Nora's nostrils flared. She inhaled again, slowly. Her eyes went uncertain.

The observation moved through the crowd the way a crack moves through ice—quiet, fast, and impossible to stop.

Across the room, Trenton found my eyes.

I looked back at him. No anger. No grief. Nothing at all.

He flinched.

I held his gaze for exactly three seconds. Then I turned and walked out.

I didn't look back. There was nothing behind me worth turning for.
