Chapter 1 of My Alpha Replaced Me While I Carried His Heir

The bond cracked at 8:47 on a Friday night, in front of three hundred wolves who would not meet my eyes.

I felt it before I heard the words. A vibration in the mark on my neck — not warmth, not the familiar low hum of a mated bond, but something tightening, like a wire being wound too far. I was standing at Nolan's left, six months along, the bloodstone pendant resting warm against my collarbone, the great hall draped with the banners of every alliance I had spent five years building. The Greywood Pack's crest hung beside the Ironveil Pack's. I had negotiated both in the same month, two years ago, in back-to-back meetings Nolan had declined to attend.

He rose from his chair.

I thought it was a toast.

Then Alexis Romero walked out of the crowd.

I knew her face. Rogue she-wolf. His high-school first love. She had been circling the pack's outer territory for three months, and every time I raised it, Nolan said she was harmless. She wore a deep red dress and she walked like she had already won something, and the hall went so quiet I could hear the candles.

"Alexis Romero," Nolan said, his voice carrying the full resonance of Alpha command, "is my chosen Luna. She will take the Beta-rank seat at my right hand, effective tonight."

I drew breath.

The Alpha tone hit me through the mate link like a fist closing around my wolf's throat.

*Silence. Do not contest. Do not speak through the link.*

It wasn't a request. It was a lock turning in a door. My wolf slammed against it — I felt her hit the barrier, white-hot and furious, and the impact shuddered through my whole body. My hands went still at my sides. My voice stayed in my chest. Three hundred wolves watched me stand there, and not one of them moved.

The mark on my neck burned cold.

Alexis took the seat at his right. She looked at me once, just once, with the particular satisfaction of someone who has been waiting a long time for a specific moment. Then she looked away, as if I were already gone.

The pup moved. A single flutter, low in my belly — a small, insistent pressure that said *I am here, I am here, I am here.* I fixed my attention on that sensation and I did not let go of it. My wolf raged inside the Alpha-tone cage, throwing herself against the walls, and I let her rage. I stood straight. I kept my face composed. I breathed.

And I began, in the cold stillness behind my eyes, to count.

Five years of treaty records. Fourteen alliances, every term memorized, every mutual-defense clause written in my hand. The Greywood Pack's renewal was due in six weeks — I was the only one who knew the renegotiation terms. The Ironveil trade route ran through a corridor I had personally surveyed. The Ashfen Pack's Alpha had shaken my hand, not Nolan's, and he had done it deliberately.

The feast continued around me as though nothing had shattered.

I walked to the upper wing. Not stumbled. Walked. Each step even and deliberate, the bloodstone warm at my throat, my wolf still screaming in a cage I had not built but had, somehow, been living in for longer than tonight.

---

The Luna office was mine for a few more hours. I knew that.

I took the ledgers before midnight.

Four stacks of leather-bound treaty records — dates, terms, the full names of every Alpha who had ever sat across a table from me. I carried them upstairs myself, one stack at a time, while an Omega named Sera stood in the doorway and watched with her hands clasped and her mouth shut. I didn't explain. She didn't ask. When I passed her the last time, she stepped aside without being told, and I understood that she already knew what I was doing and why.

By the time Alexis arrived at the Luna office the next morning, the desk drawers were empty.

---

Elliot Voss arrived on his scheduled diplomatic rotation the following morning, and Nolan received him in the great hall with Alexis positioned at his left like a prop.

I watched from the upper landing. The Lycan Prince was taller than I remembered from his last visit — or perhaps it was simply that I was paying a different kind of attention now. He moved through the formal greetings with the unhurried ease of someone who had nothing to prove, his expression neutral, his wolf visibly still. I saw the moment something registered in him. A small pause. His gaze moved, almost imperceptibly, toward the upper wing.

Nolan said, with the casual dismissal of a man who had already rewritten the story in his own head, "The former Luna is resting."

*Former.*

Elliot said nothing. He simply filed it — I could see him file it — and turned the conversation back to diplomatic protocol.

I went downstairs the next morning and introduced myself.

Pack protocol required the Luna's formal welcome. I had not yet resigned the title. I walked directly to him, extended my hand, and said, clearly: "Luna Vivienne Hayes of Shadowridge. Welcome to the pack house, Prince Voss."

His grip was firm. He held the handshake a half-second longer than protocol required, his eyes meeting mine with an attention that had nothing performative in it.

"Luna Hayes," he said. "I've been looking forward to speaking with you properly."

Behind us, across the hall, Alexis's fingers tightened around her glass.
