Chapter 1 of My Alpha Rejected Me While I Gave Birth

The bond broke at 2:47 a.m. on a Thursday.

I know the exact time because I was staring at the clock on the wall when it happened—counting seconds between contractions, trying to breathe, trying to stay inside my own body. The numbers blurred. Then the mark on my neck went cold.

Not the hot burn of labor. Cold. Like someone pressing ice against a wound you forgot you had.

Wesley was standing three feet from the bed. He'd come in two minutes earlier, and I'd felt the relief of it—my mate, my Alpha, finally here—right up until I saw his face. That stillness. The half-second of complete, terrible quiet before he spoke.

I knew that stillness. I had learned to dread it.

"I, Wesley, Alpha of Ironridge," he said, "reject you, Aileen, as my mate and Luna."

The mark didn't burn. It went colder, and colder, and then it was simply gone—like a door closing in an empty room. The bond I had built my entire life around, the thing I had mistaken for home, collapsed in the space between one contraction and the next.

I screamed. I don't know if it was the labor or the rejection or both. My wolf—the wolf I had spent years waiting for, the wolf that had never fully come—went absolutely silent. Not angry. Not fighting. Just gone, like a candle someone cupped their hand over.

"Let her rest," Wesley said to the healer, and walked out without looking back.

I heard his footsteps down the hall. Even then, even with the mark ash on my neck and the bond a dead channel in my chest, I tracked the sound of him leaving. Three years of listening for him. The habit didn't know it was over yet.

The healer—her name was Dr. Marsh, and I will not forget it—did not move toward the door. She moved toward me. She picked up the transfusion line Wesley's departure had knocked loose and reattached it without a word.

"You're going to keep breathing," she said. Not a comfort. A command.

I kept breathing.

My daughter was born at 4:11 a.m. She was small and furious and perfect, and she screamed before Dr. Marsh had even finished, and I pressed her against my chest and felt something shift in me that had nothing to do with the bond Wesley had just destroyed.

This. This was mine. He had not taken this.

I let myself have two hours. Two hours to hold her, to memorize her weight, to let the worst of the bleeding slow. Then the pack mind-link opened.

I felt it before I heard it—a searing pressure along the dead channel of the severed bond, like heat through scar tissue. Wesley marking Skye. I felt it the way you feel a car accident: the impact, the ringing, the sudden understanding of what just happened.

And then Skye's howl came through the mind-link, triumphant and carrying, broadcast to every Ironridge wolf simultaneously. Every member of my pack heard it at the same moment. Every one of them understood.

The Luna had been replaced.

I lay in the hospital bed with my daughter on my chest and listened to the silence that followed the howl—the particular silence of three hundred wolves who knew better than to react, who had already begun recalibrating their loyalty, who would be arranging flowers for Skye's Luna Ceremony by morning. I could hear, faintly, through the recovery room wall, the sound of someone already moving furniture.

I did not cry. I want to be precise about that. I felt the pain—it was physical, a hollowness in my sternum where the bond had been—but I did not cry. I looked at my daughter's face and I thought: three days. I will give myself three days.

The third night, I heard them talking in the hall. Two pack members, voices low, discussing the flower arrangements for Skye's ceremony. White roses. Wesley had always ordered white roses for pack events. I had chosen them for our mating ceremony. I had thought it meant something.

I sat up.

The movement cost me. My body was not ready. I breathed through it, one hand on my daughter's back, and reached under the mattress for the burner phone I had hidden there six weeks ago, when something in me had started paying attention to things I didn't want to name.

Damon had given me the number months before I called it. He'd pressed it into my hand at a neutral-territory gathering, said nothing except: "When you need it." I had told myself I would never need it.

I dialed.

He picked up on the second ring.

"I need extraction," I said. "Tonight. With a newborn."

A beat of silence. Then: "Coordinates in thirty seconds. I'm already moving."

No questions. Not a single one.

I looked down at my daughter. Outside the wall, someone laughed—light, social, the sound of a pack preparing for a celebration.

I memorized the coordinates Damon sent, deleted the message, and began to plan exactly what I was taking with me when I walked out of this pack house for the last time.
