Chapter 1 of My Alpha Rejected Me for His Mistress

The mark went cold at the exact second Donovan said my name.

"I, Donovan Carter, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Violette Lane, as my fated mate."

The words hit the bond like a blade dragged along the inside of my spine. My neck burned, then didn't — the warmth that had lived under my skin for ten years just stopped, like a door closing on an empty room. I heard my wolf make a sound I'd never heard her make before, a single strangled cry somewhere behind my ribs, and then nothing. Silence. Three years of silence, and now this.

I didn't fall. I made myself not fall.

The pack stood in a ring beneath the full moon, two hundred faces turned toward the altar, and every one of them had gone very still, the way wolves go still when they smell blood before they see it. Kayla stood on Donovan's arm in a green silk dress that did not belong at a Mate Ceremony, her scent — cedar and something sharp, like a struck match — already layered over his skin. I could smell her on him from twenty feet away. I could smell exactly how long she'd been that close to him.

Donovan's eyes didn't waver. "Take off the gown, Violette."

I'd hand-stitched that gown for four months. Every thread carried my scent, worked in on purpose, the old way, the sacred way — a bride's devotion sewn into fabric so her mate could carry a piece of her against his skin on the night she became Luna. I had pricked my fingers a hundred times over it. I had hummed to it like it was alive.

"Kayla will wear it tonight," he said. Flat. Final. A man reading a supply order.

Someone at the edge of the crowd shifted their weight. No one spoke. No one moved to stop this. The pack I had bled beside, cooked for, patrolled for — every one of them found somewhere else to look.

My hands were shaking. Not from fear. The bond-break was still tearing through me in slow, cold pulses, and my fingers trembled with it, useless things I couldn't fully command. But my jaw worked fine.

I reached up, grabbed the edge of the veil in my teeth, and tore it.

The silk gave with a sound like a small scream. I ripped it again, and again, until the delicate lace I'd bled over lay in strips at my feet, and then I bent down, picked up the Luna circlet — silver, cold, never mine to keep — and hurled it at Donovan's boots. It hit the stone step hard enough to crack it. A hairline fracture, right at his feet.

"I will not kneel," I said. My voice didn't shake, even though the rest of me did. "And I will never accept a rejection spoken with another woman's scent still on your skin."

Donovan's jaw tightened. That was all. No flicker of guilt, no hesitation. Just a man waiting for an inconvenience to finish.

Kayla didn't wait to be asked twice. She stepped up to the altar, lifted the torn remains of the gown from where I'd dropped them, and pulled what was left over her shoulders anyway — claiming even the wreckage, wearing my four months of stitched devotion like she'd earned it. The pack's murmur shifted, softened, turned toward her. Toward the new Luna. I watched it happen from the edge of the altar with my mark hollow and my hands still trembling, and I understood, with total clarity, that I had just become a thing to be removed.

Two warriors took my elbows before I decided to move myself. Not gently. Not as a guest.

Back in my room — my old room, already half-emptied by pack decree before I'd even climbed the altar steps — I sat on the edge of the stripped bed and pressed two fingers to my neck. Cold. Dead cold, like touching stone. I sat with that for a long moment.

Then I opened the chest at the foot of my bed, the one no one had thought to search, and pulled out the healer's old records — the ones I'd kept for three years because I never stopped needing to know why my pup died. I'd read them a dozen times and understood nothing. Tonight, with the bond severed and something in me gone terribly clear, I read them again.

Tonic composition. Week three: trace wolfsbane. Week four: trace wolfsbane. Week five: trace wolfsbane.

Measured. Calibrated. Not an accident. Not once, but three times, spaced like a man administering a dose he'd tested.

My hands went very still.

I folded the pages, slid them into the lining of the bag I had left, and said nothing to anyone. Not that night. Not the next morning, when Donovan stood before the senior warriors and stripped my candidacy, reading out my new duties — kitchen, laundry, grounds — while Kayla watched from the doorway wearing the Luna title like it had always belonged to her.

I took the assignment without a word.

Inside my ribs, for the first time in three years, something pressed once against the bone — faint, and gone before I could name it.
