Chapter 1 of My Alpha Refused to Release Our Bond After Betraying Me

The bond broke at exactly 9:47 PM on a Friday night, in front of two hundred and sixteen witnesses.

I felt it the moment Mason stood—a cold thread tightening around my ribs, pulling the air thin. I had chosen the gown myself three weeks ago, back when I still believed choosing things mattered. Navy silk. High neck to cover the mark. The fabric felt expensive against my skin, which was fitting, because it was the last expensive thing I would ever wear as Luna.

Mason's voice filled the banquet hall, layered with that Alpha-tone frequency that made the chandeliers hum. "By the authority vested in me as Alpha of Ironridge Pack, and witnessed by the Moon Goddess herself—"

My thumbnail found the center of my left palm. Press. Hold.

"—I, Mason Crawford, sever the Luna bond from Quinn Harper. Effective immediately, she holds no rank, no authority, and no voice in pack law."

The mark on my neck went cold. Not painful—just empty, like blood draining from a wound that wouldn't close. My wolf, silent for seven years, shifted fractionally in the dark. Not waking. Just... listening.

"However." Mason's pause was surgical. "The mate bond remains intact, as is my right under the life-debt clause. She will remain within Ironridge territory under pack protection."

Protection. The word tasted like copper.

I looked at him. Three full seconds. His jaw was set, his Alpha aura radiating control, and behind his left shoulder stood Romina Guzman in a dress I recognized—cream lace, empire waist, the one I'd been fitted for three years ago when I still had a waist that wasn't empty. She'd had it altered. Her hand rested on the swell of her belly, fingers spread like a claim.

Someone in the back of the hall coughed. A chair scraped. Mason's Beta, standing near the kitchen doors, wouldn't meet my eyes.

I stood. The room inhaled.

I didn't speak. I turned my back on the head table, on Mason's carefully constructed theater, on Romina's serene expression and the two hundred witnesses who would tell this story for years. My heels clicked against marble—sixteen steps to the hall doors, each one counted, each one mine.

No one stopped me.

In my room, I locked the door and sat on the edge of the bed. My hands were steady. That surprised me, briefly, before I remembered that steadiness was just another survival skill I'd learned here. I pulled out the phone—the old one, the one with a single unsaved number in the contacts—and typed one word.

*Now.*

I sent it. Then I set the phone face-down on the nightstand and waited.

My wolf stirred again. Not a howl. Not even a whimper. Just a slow uncurling in the space behind my ribs, like something that had been holding its breath for a very long time and had finally decided it was safe to exhale.

I pressed my palm flat against my sternum and felt my heartbeat—steady, steady, steady.

The mark on my neck was still cold.

---

By Sunday morning, Romina had moved into the Luna's quarters.

I heard the staff moving furniture at dawn—the scrape of the mahogany dresser I'd brought from my father's house, the muffled voices of packhouse Omegas who used to call me 'Luna' and now called me nothing at all. I stayed in my room until the sounds stopped, then walked to the kitchen for water.

The Beta was waiting in the corridor. His name was Garrett. He'd served under Mason's father and had always been polite to me in the careful way people are polite to things they pity.

"Quinn." He cleared his throat. "Luna Romina has requested that you assist with kitchen prep and corridor maintenance starting today. Morning shift begins at six."

I looked at him. He looked at the wall behind my shoulder.

"Understood," I said.

He left quickly.

I returned to my room—smaller now, a guest room on the second floor with a single window that faced the north woods—and sat on the bed. The phone was still face-down on the nightstand. I hadn't checked it. I wouldn't. Either the message had been received, or it hadn't. Either someone was coming, or I would do this alone.

My wolf shifted again, restless now, pacing the dark.

*Wait,* I told it silently. *Just wait.*

---

Kitchen prep meant peeling potatoes and chopping vegetables under the supervision of the head cook, a woman named Marla who had worked at Ironridge for thirty years and had the particular efficiency of someone who had survived three Alphas by keeping her head down and her knives sharp.

She didn't speak to me except to issue instructions. "Carrots. Thin slices. Bowl's on the left."

I worked in silence. My hands remembered the rhythm—I'd done this before, years ago, back when I was sixteen and still healing and trying to prove I could be useful. The knife was sharp. The carrots were uniform. I set the bowl on the prep counter and moved to the sink to scrub potatoes.

Behind me, two Omegas were talking in low voices near the pantry.

"—heard she tried to poison the new Luna—"

"—no, that's not what happened, Garrett said it was just the partial rejection—"

"—doesn't matter, does it? She's done either way—"

I kept scrubbing. The water ran cold over my hands. My thumbnail found my palm again—press, hold, release.

Marla's voice cut through the whispers. "If you two have time to gossip, you have time to prep the lamb. Move."

The voices stopped.

I finished the potatoes, dried my hands, and asked Marla where she wanted me next.

"Corridors," she said without looking up. "Third floor. Mop's in the supply closet."

I nodded and left.

The third floor was quiet. Most of the rooms were empty—guest quarters that hadn't been used since the last inter-pack summit two years ago. I filled the bucket, wrung out the mop, and started at the east end of the corridor.

The window at the far end overlooked the training grounds. I could see Mason below, running drills with the Deltas. His voice carried up through the glass, sharp with command. Romina stood on the covered porch outside the pack house, wrapped in a shawl, watching him.

I mopped the floor in long, even strokes and didn't look up again.

By the time I returned to my room that night, my shoulders ached and my hands smelled like lemon cleaner. I sat on the edge of the bed and checked the phone.

No reply.

I set it down, lay back, and stared at the ceiling. My wolf was still pacing. Still waiting.

*Soon,* I thought. *It has to be soon.*

Because the bond was still cold, and the mark was still there, and somewhere in the pack house below me, Romina was sleeping in my bed.
