Chapter 1 of My Alpha Poisoned Our Pups for His Mistress

The bond broke at 9:12 on the night of the Harvest Banquet, and I felt it start three minutes before it happened.

I was standing where I always stood, one step to the right of Christopher's chair, my hand on the back of it, Theodore's Luna pendant cold against my collarbone. The hall smelled like roasted meat and cider and two hundred wolves in their good clothes. I had spent nine days arranging that room. I knew where every candle was.

Then the mate bond moved.

That's the only way I can say it. It didn't warn me. It just turned over inside my chest like something rolling in its sleep, and what came through it wasn't nerves or guilt. It was satisfaction. Warm, patient, pleased. The feeling a man has when a thing he built is finally about to work.

I looked at his profile. He didn't look back.

The great hall doors opened.

She came in on the cold air, a woman in dark red with snow still melting on her shoulders, and she was holding the hand of a boy. Seven, maybe. Dark hair combed flat and damp. He walked like a child who had been told exactly how many steps to take.

Her scent reached the dais before she did. Vanilla, heavy, layered over something else — and under it, on him, on Christopher, the same scent, worn into his jacket collar the way a scent only gets into fabric over months.

"Silverfang." Christopher rose. His voice filled the room without effort. "Tonight I present my son."

The hall made a sound like a door slamming in a canyon.

"Kamden. Firstborn of my blood. Conceived before I ever took a mark, before I ever took a Luna." He let that sit. He'd practiced the pause. "And Greta Simmons, of the Moonveil Pack, who carried him alone for seven years while I did my duty here."

Duty. I felt my own hand still resting on his chair and took it off.

Six pups. Six times I lay on the healer's table and watched the light go out of a room. Six times I said *I'm sorry* to this man with blood on my thighs, and six times he said *we'll try again* in a voice I mistook for patience.

The bond hummed. Pleased. Still pleased.

He turned to me.

"I, Alpha Christopher Andrews of the Silverfang Pack, reject you, Zoey Mitchell, as my mate and Luna."

Steady. Not loud. He might have been reading a supply list.

The mark on my neck went cold first — actually cold, like someone had pressed a coin of ice to my throat — and then it went empty, and the empty was worse. Seven years of him living in the back of my skull, seven years of a second heartbeat I had stopped noticing the way you stop noticing your own, and then a door closing on a room with nothing in it.

My legs went. I hit the stone on my hip and my palms, and something inside me tore loose and kept tearing, down through my spine, my ribs, my womb, and I heard a sound come out of me that I had never made before.

Deep under the pain, something else moved. Something that had never once moved in twenty-three years. A pressure behind my breastbone, pushing up, furious — and then gone, smothered, like a hand closing over a mouth.

Two hundred wolves watched me convulse on the floor of a hall I had decorated.

Nobody moved.

"Greta Simmons is my chosen Luna," Christopher said above me.

And then he waited.

That's the part I'll keep. Not the vow. The waiting. He stood there with his hands loose at his sides and he waited for me to crawl to his shoes and ask him not to.

I got my right knee under me. Then my left foot. The pain came in waves that made the candles swim, and I stood up in the middle of one of them.

"I, Zoey Mitchell," I said, "accept your rejection."

Barely a whisper. Wolf ears. Every single one of them heard it.

I reached behind my neck and unhooked the pendant. Theodore's pendant — the one he'd pressed into my hand himself, warm from his pocket, the day I turned sixteen. I held it a second. Then I dropped it.

It rang on the stone. Rolled. Stopped against Christopher's boot.

I turned and walked the length of that hall, past the long tables, past his father's portrait watching the edges of the room, and out the doors into the snow.

Behind me, nothing. No footsteps. No voice. He stood there for thirty seconds without moving, and they all saw it.

---

I walked four miles in a banquet dress.

The mark pulsed cold every few steps like a tooth going bad. My feet stopped hurting somewhere past the orchard, which I knew was worse, not better. I kept moving anyway, because there was one thing in my head and it wasn't grief.

It was a filing cabinet.

Seven years as Luna. I signed the healer's requisitions. I reconciled the trade ledgers when the Gamma couldn't count. I know the three shell buyers Christopher runs his wolfsbane through, the border crossings, the dates, the tonnage. He never hid it from me. Why would he? I was furniture.

The old border cabin still had a working radio unit and the academy's dead-drop frequency still answered.

I typed it flat. No pleading. *Zoey Mitchell, Silverfang. I have the full wolfsbane supply chain — routes, buyers, ledgers. I'll trade it for sanctuary and one hour of your time.*

I sent it to Bloodcrest.

The reply came back in nine minutes, which was eight minutes and thirty seconds faster than any Lycan court answers anything.

*Escort at the north crossing. Two hours. Don't move from the cabin. — Callum.*

Outside, in the dark past the treeline, headlights swung onto the border road.
