Chapter 1 of My Alpha Poisoned Me for His Chosen Mate

The bond broke at 10:14 PM under the autumn full moon.

I felt it the second Enzo's teeth grazed my neck—not the completion I'd waited seven years for, but a hesitation. A pause that stretched too long. Then he pulled back.

The ceremonial platform beneath my feet was solid wood, but suddenly it felt like standing on ice about to crack. The entire Nightfall Pack had assembled in the clearing, hundreds of wolves in human form arranged in concentric circles around us. Torches burned at intervals. The air smelled like pine smoke and night-blooming jasmine. I'd chosen a white dress with simple lines because I didn't want anything complicated. I wanted Enzo to see me.

He was looking at me. But his eyes were wrong.

"I, Enzo Voss, Alpha of the Nightfall Pack," he said, and his voice carried across the clearing with the formal cadence I'd heard him use at pack trials, "reject you, Vivian Ashford, as my mate."

The words landed like physical blows. Each one precise. Each one deliberate.

The half-formed bond between us—the one his bite had started to forge—tore through my chest. Not cleanly. It ripped, serrated and vicious, like something with claws dragging backward through tissue. My knees buckled. I went down hard on the platform, palms flat against the wood, and my wolf—

My wolf went silent.

Not quiet. Silent. The space where her voice had hummed for years was suddenly hollow, a roaring emptiness that made my ears ring. I gasped, trying to pull air into lungs that felt crushed, and the pain in my chest sharpened into something white-hot and unbearable.

I heard Enzo finish the vow. "I choose Brittany Graves, daughter of the western border patrol, as my mate."

Brittany stepped onto the platform. I saw her boots first—polished black leather, laced to the knee. Then the hem of her dress, deep red like she'd planned this. She moved past me without looking down. Enzo's hand came up to her waist, and she turned into him with the kind of ease that only comes from practice.

The pack was silent. Not the reverent silence of a ceremony. The stunned silence of people watching something they didn't expect and didn't know how to process.

I pressed my fingertips together. It was a habit—something I did when I was thinking through a problem, mapping variables, finding the path forward. My hands were shaking. The bond's torn edges were still screaming through my chest, and my wolf's absence was a weight that made it hard to breathe, but I pressed my fingertips together anyway and held them there until the shaking stopped.

Then I stood up.

No one helped me. I didn't ask. I got my feet under me, straightened my spine, and walked off the platform. My face felt numb. I kept it controlled. I did not look at Enzo. I did not look at Brittany. I looked at the path between the rows of pack members and I walked it, steady and unhurried, like I was leaving a meeting instead of my own rejected Mate Ceremony.

Every wolf I passed turned to watch. I felt their eyes on my back. Some of them had known me for seven years. Some of them I'd healed after border skirmishes, setting bones and stitching wounds in the pack house infirmary while Enzo took credit for our warriors' resilience. None of them said a word.

I reached the edge of the clearing and kept walking. The forest swallowed me. Behind me, I heard Enzo's voice resume the ceremony—this time with Brittany's name in all the places mine should have been.

I walked until the torchlight faded and the only sound was my own breathing and the crunch of leaves under my feet. Then I stopped, leaned against a tree, and let myself feel it.

The bond was gone. Not dormant. Not damaged. Gone. Ripped out and cauterized in the same brutal motion. My wolf's silence was worse. She'd been fragile for months—I'd felt her weakening as the years of invisible service drained us both—but I'd thought once we were marked, once the bond was complete, she'd strengthen again.

Now there was nothing. Just me, alone in my own head for the first time since I was sixteen.

I pressed my palms flat against the tree bark and focused on the rough texture under my skin. Concrete. Real. I could work with real.

Forty-eight hours later, Brittany found me in the pack house common room.

She walked in with a rolled parchment in one hand and a smile that didn't reach her eyes. A dozen wolves were scattered around the room—some eating breakfast, some just passing through. She waited until she had an audience.

"Vivian Ashford," she said, loud enough for everyone to hear. "By order of Alpha Enzo Voss, you are reassigned to Omega status effective immediately. You'll report to the pack house for labor rotation. Laundry, kitchen prep, floors. Marcus will give you the schedule."

She handed me the parchment. I took it. The room had gone quiet again—that same stunned silence from the ceremony.

"Understood," I said.

Brittany leaned closer. Her voice dropped to a murmur, just below the hearing of the wolves watching us. "You should have left on your own. Now you'll leave in pieces."

I met her eyes. Measured her. She was taller than me by two inches, broader in the shoulders, and she had the kind of confidence that came from believing she'd already won. I said nothing. But I pressed my hands flat against my thighs and held them still, and I watched her watch me, and I memorized the exact angle of her smile.

Then I nodded once and walked toward the kitchen.

My first shift started at four AM. I reported on time, tied my hair back, and began washing dishes in the industrial sink. The water was cold. My hands ached where I'd pressed them too hard against my legs the day before, but I kept them steady and worked through the pile methodically.

At 4:47 AM, while the pack house was still dark and silent, I stood at that sink and quietly revoked the protective wards I'd been sustaining over the Nightfall Pack's borders for seven years.

I'd woven them from my own blood and intention, one careful thread at a time, anchoring them to the old oak trees that marked the territory lines. No one knew they existed. Enzo thought the borders held because his patrols were disciplined. He had no idea I was the reason rogue incursions stopped at the tree line, the reason his warriors never got sick during winter, the reason the prey animals stayed abundant and the water ran clean.

I pulled the wards back, one by one. It felt like peeling bandages off a wound. The borders went bare. I felt it—a sudden coolness, like pulling back a curtain and letting cold air into a warm room.

I dried my hands. Pocketed a small herb-cutting knife from the supply shelf—the only tool I'd need. Then I returned to my Omega cot in the basement and lay down in the dark.

I needed one thing before I could leave. Just one.

A vial.
