Chapter 1 of My Alpha Murdered Our Pup

The bond cracked at 9:47 PM on the Winter Solstice, while I was running.

I felt it first as a flicker—like static across a radio frequency I'd been tuned to for five years. Then the mind-link image bled through the pack channel, careless and unshielded, and every wolf in the Ironveil forest saw it at once: Hudson. Not leading the run. Not patrolling our borders. Lounging on a cream-colored sofa in a room I'd never seen, golden lamplight pooling around him, a baby boy cradled against his chest.

And beside him—a woman in a cashmere sweater I recognized because I'd bought it two seasons ago in Seattle. Soft grey. Expensive. I'd left it in the pack house donation bin after deciding the color didn't suit me.

The image cut before her face resolved, but my wolf stirred. For the first time in five years, something inside me moved—a low grinding vibration at the base of my skull, like something buried alive testing the walls of its coffin.

Around me, the pack slowed. Whispers rippled through the mind-link. *Where is Alpha Hudson? Whose baby—? Luna, do you—?*

I forced my voice steady across the channel. "I'll check on him. Continue the run. Gamma Lyle, take lead."

I peeled away from the pack before anyone could see my hands shake. Shifted back to human form behind the treeline, pulled on the clothes I'd stashed, and walked to my car with a smile still fixed on my face. A young Delta passed me on the path and I waved. My voice came out warm. Normal.

The coastal coordinates Hudson's faint bond-trail provided were an hour south. I drove in silence. No music. No tears. My wolf's vibration grew sharper with every mile, less grief and more something I didn't have a name for yet.

The safe house sat back from the road, tucked into a grove of pines. Warm light spilled from the windows. The door was unlocked.

I stepped inside.

Hudson was exactly where the mind-link image had shown him—on the sofa, the baby still against his chest. He looked up when I entered. Not startled. Irritated.

"Tessa." His tone was flat. "You shouldn't be here."

Margaret emerged from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel. She didn't look surprised either. "Well. I suppose it was bound to happen eventually."

Then I saw her.

Maren.

Sitting in the armchair by the window, bottle in hand, wearing my donated sweater. Her blonde hair was longer than I remembered. She'd gained weight—the soft kind that comes from being well-fed, well-kept. When she looked at me, her expression cycled through guilt, then softened into something worse.

Pity.

"Tessa," she said quietly. "I'm sorry you had to find out this way."

My phone was already recording in my coat pocket. I'd turned it on in the car, habit from years of documenting pack expenses, and I hadn't turned it off.

Hudson stood, shifting the baby to one arm. His Alpha aura pressed outward—a command without words. "Sit down. We're going to talk about this like adults."

I didn't sit.

He exhaled through his nose. "This is how it has to be, Tessa. The pack needs an heir. You know that. We've tried—" He stopped himself. "This isn't about you. It's about Ironveil's future."

Margaret set the towel on the counter. "You've had five good years, dear. You should be grateful. Not every Luna gets to serve a bloodline like ours."

Maren stood, cradling a second bottle. The baby in Hudson's arms squirmed. She moved closer, her voice soft and careful. "The Moon Goddess led us to each other. I didn't plan this. Neither did Hudson. But when the bond is real—" She glanced at him, then back at me. "This is what was meant to be."

I looked at the baby. Dark hair. Hudson's nose. Or maybe not. I couldn't tell. My wolf's vibration climbed higher, scraping against my ribs.

I asked one question. My voice didn't shake. "How long?"

Hudson's jaw tightened. "Does it matter?"

"How long, Hudson."

"Three years." He said it like a fact. Like weather. "The boy is eight months old."

Three years. While I funded the eastern territory expansion. While I healed pack members through the winter fever outbreak. While I slept beside him every night and believed the mate bond meant something.

Margaret crossed her arms. "You're taking this better than I expected. That's good. Shows maturity."

I turned toward the door.

"Tessa." Hudson's Alpha tone cracked across the room—a direct command, weighted with power. "You will not speak of this to anyone. Do you understand me?"

My hand was on the doorknob. For five years, that tone had worked. For five years, I'd bent.

I pulled the door open.

"Tessa—"

I stepped outside. Closed it behind me. The click of the latch was quiet. Final.

I walked to my car. Got in. My hands found the steering wheel. I didn't start the engine right away.

My wolf's vibration had sharpened into something colder. Clearer. Not grief. Not yet.

Purpose.

I pulled out my phone, stopped the recording, and opened the encrypted contact channel I'd set up three months ago when I first noticed the rogue incursion patterns Hudson kept failing to report. Lycan Prince Caelan Nighthollow. Lycan Council investigator.

I typed quickly. No preamble. No emotion.

*Ironveil Alpha Hudson Barnes. Rogue activity on eastern border, sectors 4-7, unreported for six months. Patrol logs attached. Request formal investigation into financial conduct and governance. I have actionable intelligence.*

I attached the files I'd been quietly compiling. Sent it.

The reply came faster than I expected.

*Preliminary inquiry approved. Will contact within 48 hours. —CN*

I set the phone down. Started the engine. My reflection in the rearview mirror looked calm. Composed.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my opposite wrist. Held it there. Three breaths.

Then I drove back toward Ironveil, and began to plan.
