Chapter 1 of My Alpha Locked Me Away for His Widow

The bond slipped open at the third mile marker under a blood-orange harvest moon, and the first thing I heard through it was another woman's name.

Clare.

Asher's wolf breathed it out like a starving man tasting water. I stumbled on the pine-needle path. The pack streamed past me in wolf form, gray and brown and black, oblivious, tails brushing my knees. I was the only one in human skin — the wolfless Luna, always trailing at the edge of the formation — and I felt his memory push through the crack in the bond like a hand shoving open a door.

A hotel foyer three years ago. My hand extended. His nostrils flaring. His inner voice, clear as a bell: *She smells like Clare. Faint. Diluted. But close enough.*

The bond snapped shut.

I stopped in the middle of the trail. My hands went numb at my sides. Somewhere ahead of me, my mate ran through the trees calling for a dead man's widow, and I stood in the dirt understanding what I had been for three years.

A stand-in.

---

When the pack circled back to the clearing and Asher shifted, I was already waiting. Steam rose off his bare shoulders. The pack was fanning out around us, some still shaking off fur, and I stepped directly into his path before he could reach the pack house steps where Clare stood in her mourning gray.

"Say it," I said. My voice was quiet. It didn't have to be loud. "Say what your wolf just said through the bond."

His jaw set. His eyes — moon-lit and gold a minute ago — went flat.

"Elaine. Not here."

"Here," I said.

He looked past me at his pack. At his Beta, Marcus, half-shifted at the tree line. At my father, Arthur, hovering three rows back in his overly formal wool coat, already looking sick.

Then he looked at me and did what Asher Jensen always did when cornered. He chose the shortest line to the door.

"You were a stand-in scent," he said. "That's what you're asking. Yes."

Someone exhaled. A young Delta looked away like the ground had gotten interesting. My father took one step back into the crowd, as if distance could unname him.

Something inside my ribs — something that had been sleeping since I was thirteen — hit a wall and *screamed*. My vision flickered. For one bright, impossible second the clearing went silver-edged, and I felt teeth I didn't own snap at the inside of my own chest.

Asher didn't notice. He was already walking past me toward Clare.

The silver drained out of my eyes before anyone but me knew it had been there.

---

I drove the ridge road at eleven that night because I could not stay inside those walls. The headlights in my rearview came up fast — too fast, black and high-set — and I knew the truck before it hit me. Clare drove a black F-250. She had asked me last spring what color suited a widow.

The impact took the rear quarter panel. The guardrail folded like paper.

I remember the car going sideways, then over, and the specific wet crack of my own ribs against the steering column. I remember the smell of pine sap and gasoline. I remember, halfway down the ravine while the car was still tumbling, the cramp — low and tearing and absolute — that told me a pup I had not yet told anyone about was leaving my body on the descent.

Patrol found me at the bottom. I don't remember being carried.

---

The infirmary lights were fluorescent and cruel. I was on the gurney under a thin sheet, and Dr. Wren Callahan was working between my knees with her mouth in a hard line, and I already knew what she was cleaning away.

Asher came through the doors. Clare was behind him, one hand pressed to her throat, sobbing about Jude. *Worse tonight. Worse. He needs her, Ash, please —*

Asher didn't look at the sheet. He looked at my wrist.

"I'm sorry," he said, and I understood, in the second before he spoke again, that he wasn't sorry for me.

His hand closed on my forearm. He turned my palm up over a silver bowl the healer had already set on the tray. Then the Alpha tone rolled down the bond, so deep it vibrated in the marrow of the ribs he had not asked about.

***Bleed for him, Luna.***

My fingers opened against my will. Wren's blade was small and clean. The blood came in a steady rope, red into the polished bowl, and my body — the body that had just lost something — obeyed him because that was what three years of a mate bond had taught it to do.

The pack watched from the doorway. Marcus. My father. Two Gammas. A cluster of Omegas with their hands over their mouths.

No one moved.

Asher watched the bowl fill. Not the sheet. Not my face. The bowl.

I counted the drops until I stopped being able to.

---

Two mornings later I stood upright in the clearing for the next run with tape around my ribs and a hollow where the pup had been, and when Asher's Alpha tone hit me — *forward, Luna* — my blood said *no*.

My eyes flashed silver for a full beat. His voice broke against me like water hitting stone. Two hundred wolves saw it.

Into that silence, before anyone could speak, I said, "I am petitioning the Blackthorn tribunal for an attempted-kill hearing. I name Clare Gomez. I name her black truck. I name the ridge road at eleven-forty on the night of the anniversary run."

Asher's face went to granite.

Clare, at his shoulder, delicately touched her throat.

---

By the next morning I was in the infirmary again, alone, standing over Jude's chart while Wren was three rooms away on a call. The wolfsbane markers on his blood panel were not the spiked, single-dose pattern of an external poisoning. They were even. Rhythmic. Micro-dosed. Someone had been feeding it to him in careful, repeated amounts for months.

I photographed every page on a borrowed phone. I slid the phone flat inside the bandage over my ribs, where it pressed cold against skin the sheet had not yet stopped hurting.

I walked out with my posture perfect and my face blank, and when I passed the pack house foyer, Clare was already there — kneeling on the marble with a dropped teacup, one hand at her throat, watching the double doors and holding, in her other hand, something bright and thin that caught the light like silver.
