Chapter 1 of My Alpha Forced Me to Kneel for His Mistress

The bond went quiet at 3:47 a.m., and that was how I knew.

Maddox slept with one arm slung across my waist, the way he had for three years. I lay still and breathed him in—pine, smoke, the warm musk under his jaw I had memorized like scripture. And underneath all of it, fresh as a cut flower laid on a pillow: jasmine. Sweet. Female. Fated.

My fingers found the mark on my neck. It wasn't burning. It wasn't anything. Inside me, where my wolf usually breathed in tiny flickers, there was a held silence. Like she had already seen what I had not yet let myself see, and stopped making sound out of mercy.

I did not wake him. I did not ask. I lay there in the dark with my hand on the place where his teeth had broken my skin three winters ago, and I understood every single thing that was about to happen.

Leanna Rose had come home.

***

The pack assembled at dusk for the bonfire. I wore the green dress Maddox said he liked. I am not sure why. Habit, maybe. Or pride wearing the costume of habit.

The fire was tall. Faces I had drafted treaties for, faces I had taught to read alliance maps, faces I had bandaged after border skirmishes—all of them turned toward the platform where Maddox stood with Leanna at his elbow.

She was beautiful. I will not pretend she wasn't. Hair like dark honey, the kind of softness that doesn't have to work for itself. She was already wearing a coat I recognized as Maddox's.

He didn't look at me when he spoke.

"I, Maddox Hawkins, Alpha of Ironveil Pack, reject you, Vienna Bennett, as my mate."

The mark on my neck went cold so fast it felt wet. Then it went empty—a door closing on an empty room, the click of a latch in a house where no one lives. My wolf, that faint pulse I had carried like a candle in cupped hands for twenty-six years, collapsed into nothing. Not pain. Absence.

My knee hit the dirt.

Leanna smiled. Not subtly. Not behind a hand. A full, satisfied smile, like a woman watching a chair she had ordered finally arrive.

The pack stared. Someone gasped. No one moved toward me.

I put one hand flat on the ground. I made myself feel the cold of it. I made myself count three breaths. Then I stood.

"I, Vienna Bennett," I said—and my voice did not shake, I will keep that until I die—"accept your rejection."

The crowd parted as I walked through it. I did not look at Maddox. I did not look at Leanna. I looked at the gate beyond the fire, and I walked toward it, and whatever aura I had carried as his marked mate guttered out behind me like a wick pinched between two fingers.

I did not let one of them see my face.

The quarters I returned to were not mine anymore, but no one had yet thought to lock the door.

I shut it behind me. I leaned my forehead against the wood. And then, with my back to a room I had decorated, in a house I had built the political bones of, I let myself go down.

One hand over the dead mark. One hand braced against the door. No sound. Not one. Three years of his name in my mouth and another woman's name in his, three years of telling myself the bond would warm if I just kept feeding it—every quiet humiliation I had swallowed surfaced at once, and I let them surface, and I did not make a sound.

When I straightened up I wiped my face on the back of my wrist. I went to the closet. I pulled the go-bag I had packed eight months ago and never told anyone about.

Someone knocked at the door before dawn. Soft. Familiar.

I opened it.

Genesis stood in the hallway with her own bag at her feet. She did not say I'm sorry. She did not say I told you. She looked at me with her chin up and her jaw set and said, "Tell me the plan when you have one."

I nodded. That was all I could do.

Inside my chest, where my wolf had been, something else was settling in. Colder. Sharper. It did not howl. It watched.

***

Forty-eight hours.

That was how long it took for Maddox to install Leanna in the Luna quarters—my quarters—and to summon me to the common room to announce, in front of the assembled senior wolves, that I was being reassigned to Omega-tier duties "until she finds a new pack."

Inventory. Supply runs. Floors.

The Beta, Jase, did not speak. He looked at a point on the wall above my shoulder. I think he was the only person in that room who was ashamed.

By noon I was on my knees in the east wing with a bucket of soapy water and a brush. Above me on the wall hung the alliance map of the Thornridge border—my handwriting in the margins, my color codes, the small star I had drawn next to the disputed creek bed because Maddox could never remember which side of it was ours.

A pair of polished boots stopped in front of me.

I did not look up.

"Missed a spot," Leanna said, sweetly, and tipped her coffee cup.

The dark stain bloomed across the floor I had just washed, and crept toward the toe of my shoe.
