Chapter 2
The flicker of heat deep inside me didn't fade. It pulsed, low and strange, right beneath my ribs. I stared at the rejection paper in my hand, then up at Ryker. He didn't look like a man who had just learned he was going to be a father. He looked like a man annoyed by a stain on his rug.
"You're lying," I whispered again. My voice shook, but I couldn't stop the words. "There is no block. I know your medical files, Ryker. I mix your herbs. I brew your teas. I know every inch of your damaged body."
Ryker's jaw tightened. The faint bruise on his cheek flexed. He didn't like being challenged. Not by anyone, and definitely not by me. For three years, I had been the quiet, obedient Luna. I never raised my voice. I never pushed back.
He stood up. The heavy oak chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. His massive frame dwarfed the desk between us.
Then, the air in the room changed. It grew impossibly heavy.
He didn't just speak. He unleashed his Alpha aura. The sheer weight of it slammed into my chest, forcing the breath from my lungs. My knees buckled slightly. The scent of dark cedar and smoke, which used to make my heart flutter, suddenly turned toxic and suffocating. It wrapped around my throat like a vice.
"Since you refuse to sign the paper," Ryker said, his voice dropping into that terrifying, vibrating Alpha tone, "I will do it the old way. Right here. Right now."
Panic spiked in my blood. "Ryker, no. The pup—"
"I, Alpha Ryker of the Ironveil Pack," he boomed. His eyes were cold, flat chips of gray ice. There was no hesitation. No flicker of regret.
"Stop!" I gasped, clutching my stomach.
He didn't stop. He didn't even blink. "I reject you, Alivia Griffin, as my fated mate and Luna. I sever this bond. I strip you of my mark and my name."
The words hung in the air for a split second. Then, the universe tore in half.
White-hot agony exploded on the right side of my neck. It was exactly where he had bitten me three years ago. The faded scar tissue didn't just hurt; it felt like someone had pressed a glowing branding iron directly into my flesh.
A scream ripped from my throat. I couldn't hold it back. The pain was blinding, absolute, and soul-crushing. It felt like a jagged blade was scraping against my actual soul, cutting away a piece of me and throwing it into a fire.
I collapsed. My knees hit the floor hard. I curled into a ball on the cold rug, clutching my neck with both hands. Tears streamed down my face. I gasped for air, but my lungs wouldn't work. The rejection was a physical violence. It was burning me alive.
Through the haze of my tears, I saw Ryker's boots. He had walked around the desk. He stood over me, looking down at my writhing body.
"It's done," he said. His voice was back to normal. Calm. Completely unaffected. He didn't feel a fraction of my pain, because he had never truly accepted the bond in his heart. "Pack your things, Alivia. Elena will be at the pack house by noon. I want you out of her room before she gets here."
He turned his back on me and walked toward the window, adjusting his cuffs.
I lay there on the floor, shivering. The pain in my neck was a brutal, throbbing fire. I felt so small. So utterly broken. Twenty-three years of being the backup plan. Seven years of loving a man who didn't see me. Three years of serving a pack that mocked me. And now, I was discarded on the floor like trash.
I closed my eyes, waiting for the darkness to take me. I wanted to pass out. I wanted it to end.
But the heat under my ribs flared again.
It wasn't a small flicker anymore. It was a spark hitting gasoline.
Deep inside my mind, in the hollow, silent void where my inner wolf was supposed to be, something snapped. It sounded like a heavy iron chain breaking in two.
Suddenly, a rush of pure, electric power flooded my veins. It chased away the cold. It pushed back against the searing pain of the severed mark. The power was wild, untamed, and ancient.
Then, I heard it.
A roar.
It wasn't a physical sound in the room. It echoed entirely inside my skull. It was a furious, blood-chilling howl that shook the very foundations of my mind. It was so loud, so deafening, I flinched, expecting Ryker to turn around. He didn't. He just kept staring out the window.
*MINE.*
The voice in my head was female. It was deep, guttural, and dripping with absolute rage.
*OURS.*
I gasped, my eyes flying open.
My wolf.
She was awake. After ten years of silence, after every healer had written me off as a stunted, broken anomaly, she was here. The trauma of the rejection hadn't killed her. It had ripped her out of her slumber. And she was furious.
I felt her presence stretch out inside me. She was massive. I could feel the phantom sensation of thick fur, sharp claws, and lethal teeth. She paced back and forth in my mind, her yellow eyes burning with a fierce, protective light.
*Get up,* she snarled. *Do not kneel for this weak male. Get up!*
The blinding agony in my neck shifted. My wolf wrapped her energy around the wound, dulling the pain into a heavy ache. She lent me her strength.
I slowly pushed myself off the floor. My muscles trembled, but I locked my knees. I stood up straight.
Through my wolf's awakened senses, the world looked completely different. Everything was sharper. The colors were brighter. And as I looked at Ryker's back, the golden, romantic filter of the last seven years burned away entirely.
I didn't see the handsome, powerful Alpha I had pined for.
Through my wolf's eyes, I saw the ugly truth. I saw a man with a slight slump to his shoulders, favoring his left side because his old battle wounds were aching. I saw a leader who was too weak to honor his own mate, and too blind to sense the powerful wolf that had just awakened three feet behind him.
He was pathetic.
He was throwing away his loyal Luna and his unborn pup for a woman who had already betrayed him once.
*He is nothing,* my wolf growled in my head, her voice vibrating with dark amusement. *Let him have the traitor. We are leaving.*
I reached up and touched the raw, burning skin of my neck. I didn't cry anymore. The tears dried on my cheeks. My heart, which had been breaking just minutes ago, turned to absolute ice.
I was never his love story. I was just the placeholder.
But the placeholder was done playing by his rules.
Chapter 3
Ryker turned back from the window, probably expecting to see me curled into a pathetic, sobbing ball on his rug.
Instead, I was standing perfectly straight. I wiped the last tear from my cheek. My skin felt too tight, and the right side of my neck throbbed with a sickening, burning heat, but my legs were steady.
He frowned. The faint bruise on his jaw shifted as he clenched his teeth. "Are you deaf, Alivia? I told you to pack. Elena will be here soon."
*Tear his throat out,* my wolf snarled. Her voice was dark, heavy, and thrilling.
*Not yet,* I told her silently. *We play this smart.*
I looked at the formal rejection paper sitting on his desk. I didn't reach for it. I just looked back at him. My eyes felt different. Colder.
"No," I said.
My voice was completely flat. It didn't shake at all.
Ryker blinked. He actually looked thrown off. "What did you just say?"
"I said no." I smoothed down the front of my shirt, ignoring the blood pounding in my ears. "I acknowledge your rejection, Ryker. My mark is burning. But I won't complete the severance right now. I'm not signing your little paper today."
His chest rumbled with a warning growl. He took a heavy step toward me, letting his Alpha aura flare again. The air in the room grew thick and oppressive. "You don't have a choice. I gave you an order."
Five minutes ago, that tone would have forced me to my knees. It would have made my human instincts scream in terror. Now? It felt like a warm breeze. My newly awakened wolf stood tall in my mind, wrapping her ancient, wild energy around my consciousness. She shielded me completely from his pressure.
I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I just stared at him with dead, empty eyes.
"I'll sign it when I'm ready," I said calmly. "And I'll pack when I feel like it."
Before he could process what was happening, I turned on my heel and walked out of the study. I left the heavy oak door wide open. I could feel his eyes on my back, heavy with confusion and rising unease. He didn't follow me. He didn't know how to handle a Luna who didn't cower.
The Ironveil seasonal banquet was that night.
Normally, I would have spent the entire afternoon rushing around the kitchens. I would have been checking the roast, arranging the floral centerpieces, and making sure Ryker's special dietary meals were prepped so his old battle wounds wouldn't flare up. I used to manage every tiny detail to make him look perfect.
Tonight, I didn't step foot in the kitchen.
Instead, I stood in front of my bedroom mirror. I traced the angry, red scar on my neck where his mark used to be whole. It hurt, but the pain kept me sharp. It reminded me of exactly what I was worth to him.
*Make them look at us,* my wolf purred in my mind. *Make them bow.*
I smiled. It wasn't a nice smile.
I bypassed my usual modest, pastel dresses. I reached to the very back of my closet and pulled out the formal Luna regalia. It was a stunning, floor-length gown in deep midnight blue, embroidered with silver threads that looked like moonlight. It hugged my curves perfectly. I paired it with the heavy silver Luna necklace—a piece of antique jewelry Ryker's mother had given me three years ago.
I pinned my hair up, applied a bold red lipstick, and walked out of the room.
Downstairs, the banquet hall was buzzing with loud chatter, music, and clinking glasses. The entire pack was here.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase and looked down over the railing.
It didn't take long to spot them. Ryker was standing near the center of the room. And clinging tightly to his arm was my sister, Elena.
She wore a flashy, bright red dress with a plunging neckline. She was laughing loudly, tossing her golden hair over her shoulder, playing the glamorous returning queen. Ryker was looking down at her with a soft, attentive expression I hadn't seen directed at me in seven years.
My chest tightened for a fraction of a second. Then, my wolf growled, and the hurt vanished, replaced by pure, icy focus.
I took my first step down the stairs. My heels clicked sharply against the marble.
*Let them feel us,* my wolf commanded.
I took a deep breath and let my aura slip out.
For twenty-three years, my scent had been faint. Weak. Now, it rolled down the staircase like a tidal wave. It was sharp, wild, and laced with absolute authority.
The effect was immediate.
The chatter near the stairs died instantly. A group of Delta warriors standing by the banister suddenly stopped talking. They turned toward me. Their eyes widened. Without even thinking, two of them lowered their heads and bared their necks in pure, instinctual submission.
The silence spread through the hall like a dropped glass. Heads turned. Conversations stopped. The music seemed to fade into the background.
Ryker felt it. His head snapped toward the staircase. His gray eyes locked onto me, and I saw genuine shock flash across his face. He felt the weight of my wolf.
Elena noticed the silence. She turned, her smug smile faltering when she saw me descending in full Luna regalia. She had fully expected me to be hiding in my room, sobbing over my packed bags, too humiliated to show my face.
I didn't stop. I glided across the floor, the sea of pack members parting for me automatically. They could feel the shift in power. They could feel the predator inside me.
I walked right up to Ryker and Elena.
"Alivia," Elena said. Her voice was sickly sweet, but her eyes were venomous. "I'm so surprised to see you here. Ryker told me you were... transitioning out."
"Why would I do that?" I asked, my voice smooth and loud enough for the nearby elders to hear. "It's the seasonal banquet. A Luna's place is with her pack."
Before Ryker could step away, I moved close to him. I hooked my arm firmly through his free one. I dug my fingers slightly into his bicep, locking him in place.
He tensed like he'd been shocked. "Alivia, what are you doing?" he hissed under his breath, his eyes darting around the room.
"My duty," I whispered back, flashing him a brilliant, fake smile.
I turned to face the silent, staring crowd. Elena was standing awkwardly on his other side, her flashy red dress suddenly looking desperate next to my silver and blue. She was seething, but she couldn't make a scene. Not in front of the elders and the elite warriors.
I raised my free hand.
"Thank you all for gathering tonight!" I called out. My voice rang clear and steady across the banquet hall. "It is a beautiful evening. We are so happy to welcome my sister, Elena, back to Ironveil territory as a guest."
I emphasized the word *guest*. Elena's jaw clenched so hard I thought her teeth might crack.
"But that is not the only reason to celebrate," I continued, my smile widening. I looked up at Ryker. He was staring at me in absolute horror. He knew what was coming, but he couldn't stop me. Not without using his Alpha tone on me in public, which would cause an unforgivable scandal.
I looked back at the pack.
"Alpha Ryker and I have some wonderful news," I announced, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "I am pregnant. The Ironveil Pack is finally getting an heir."
For one second, there was dead silence.
Then, the hall erupted. Cheers, howls, and applause shook the walls. Pack members raised their glasses. The elders beamed with pride, nodding to each other.
I felt Ryker's arm go completely rigid beneath my hands. He was trapped. If he denied the pup now, he would look like a madman or a monster to his people.
I glanced over his chest and met Elena's eyes. She was pale, her mouth slightly open, forced to stand there and listen to the pack cheer for my child. She had to swallow her rage and play the gracious outsider.
*Good,* my wolf purred, settling comfortably in my mind as the pack howled my name. *Let the games begin.*
