Chapter 5
Jayden pulled out his smartphone. The sharp blue glare of the screen lit up his harsh, handsome face in the dark rain.
With easy, dominant grace, his long fingers tapped the glass three times. He sent a direct fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer straight from his private accounts into the electronic billing system of the hospital.
A high-pitched chime sounded from his phone, confirming the cleared transfer.
The red eviction flag on Lloyd’s medical record vanished instantly. It was replaced by a platinum VIP badge that guaranteed full access to the top specialists in the city.
Standing against the cold, wet bricks, Diana felt a rush of sheer relief mixed with terror.
Her knees buckled beneath her as the crushing weight on her lungs finally lifted. Lloyd was safe. The heartless hospital board would not turn her tiny boy out into the freezing night. He would get his medicine and his warm bed.
Yet, as she watched Jayden slip the leather ledger back into his coat, the terrifying reality sank in.
She had signed her freedom away. She had placed her life into the iron grip of the most ruthless Alpha King in the city.
Jayden stepped closer, closing the space between them until his massive chest pressed against her shoulder.
He leaned down, his warm breath brushing against her cold ear, sending a sharp shiver down her spine.
"Listen to me very carefully, sweet thief," Jayden whispered in a low, dark voice that vibrated through her skin.
"If you try to run from me again, if you lie to my face, or if you fail to answer my call on the first ring... the medical funding stops instantly. The hospital will cut off your son's treatment within the hour, and your arrest warrant will go live across the entire state."
Diana swallowed hard, her throat feeling bone-dry despite the rain hitting her lips.
She could only nod weakly, completely trapped in the cage he had built around her in just a few minutes.
"You think you saved your boy tonight, and you did," Jayden murmured.
His large fingers gently traced her wet jawline, tilting her pale face up so her tear-filled eyes had to meet his glowing silver-amber gaze. "But you belong to me now. Every breath you take, every step you make, and every beat of your heart is under my authority."
He turned toward the street and raised two fingers in a silent signal.
A sleek, blacked-out car pulled smoothly to the curb. The heavy passenger door opened automatically, revealing a plush, warm leather interior.
"My driver will take you straight to the hospital so you can see your boy tonight," Jayden ordered, his tone cold and unyielding.
"Spend the night by his bedside. Kiss him goodbye in the morning. Because at six o'clock sharp tomorrow, my car will be waiting outside the hospital to bring you straight to Malachi Tower. Your new life begins the exact moment the clock strikes six."
Diana looked up at his terrifying face, her chest heaving with soft sobs.
"Six o'clock," she whispered, her voice cracking over the sound of the storm. "I'll be ready."
Jayden did not offer another word. He turned and walked away with powerful grace toward his black motorcycle.
He swung his long leg over the heavy machine, pulled his black helmet over his dark hair, and kicked the roaring engine to life.
The thunderous motor echoed through the alley, shaking the damp brick walls.
Diana stood frozen by the open car door, watching in heavy silence as he revved the engine. The bike's massive tire splashed through the dark puddles as he shot out of the alley, disappearing into the rainy night and leaving her alone with his waiting driver.
Chapter 6
The seventy-story monolith of Malachi International pierced the stormy morning skyline like a jagged black blade. Cold rain brushed against the reflective, tinted glass as Diana stepped into the soaring marble lobby.
The sheer scale of the building felt less like a corporate headquarters and more like a high-tech fortress designed to crush the spirit of anyone who dared enter.
Her heart battered against her ribs as the private executive elevator swept her upward to the penthouse level.
When the heavy brass doors slid open with a soft hiss, she was thrust straight into the heart of Jayden’s lair.
The floor was a masterpiece of dark luxury. Charcoal velvet walls, floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking the sprawling city, and the heavy scent of crushed cedar, espresso, and Jayden’s dominant Alpha aura filled the air.
At the far end of the vast room, behind a massive desk carved from solid black obsidian, sat Jayden Malachi.
He didn't look up when she entered. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that clung to his broad shoulders, his dark hair neatly styled, though a few stray strands fell over his sharp brow.
The morning light caught the subtle crimson undertone in his silver-amber eyes, making him look like a predator resting atop his mountain.
"You're four minutes early, sweet thief," Jayden growled, his low baritone sending a sharp shiver down her spine.
"I prefer not to keep my owner waiting," Diana replied, forcing her voice to remain steady as she walked toward his desk.
She smoothed down her plain black pencil skirt, feeling his heavy gaze slowly track every movement of her body.
Jayden leaned back in his leather chair, interlocking his long fingers. A dark smirk curled his lips as he observed her pale face.
Looking to break her spirit on her very first morning—to make her bow and submit—he gestured toward a low glass table on her left.
Stacked high on the table sat a mountainous, two-thousand-page pile of yellowed, leather-bound logistics ledgers. The sheer volume of the paperwork looked like a punishment meant for an entire legal department.
"Your duties begin now," Jayden stated, his voice smooth as silk and cold as ice.
"Those are backlogged shipping ledgers from our Sicilian territory, written entirely in an archaic, handwritten southern dialect. Translate every line into English, organize the accounts, and have a completed report on my desk by five o'clock sharp."
Diana stared at the massive stack. "Two thousand pages? In handwritten archaic Italian? In eight hours?"
"If you fail, or if a single digit is translated incorrectly, your contract goes live as breached," Jayden purred softly, rising from his chair with slow, panther-like grace.
He stalked around his desk until he was standing directly in front of her, his imposing shadow completely wrapping around her small frame.
He reached out, his long fingers trailing down the side of her warm neck, brushing over her pulse point. "And you know what happens to your son's funding the second you breach."
Diana gasped softly at his touch, her pulse spiking frantically under his fingertips.
The dangerous heat radiating from his body hit her like a wave, making her mouth go dry. He was terrifying, cruel, and completely ruthless, yet her body reacted to his dark Alpha presence.
"Do we have an understanding?" Jayden murmured, leaning down until his lips hovered a breath away from hers, his silver eyes flashing with dark heat.
"Yes, Mr. Malachi," Diana whispered, clenching her fists to keep her hands from trembling.
She pulled away from his touch and walked to the small glass desk positioned directly outside his executive office, where he could watch her every move through the glass.
What Jayden did not know—and what his background checks had failed to reveal—was that Diana had spent her teenage years absorbing obscure Sicilian trade dialects just to survive on the brutal docks before she met him.
She knew the archaic slang, the shorthand numbers, and the hidden codes better than most native scholars.
Setting her jaw with fierce determination, Diana pulled the first ledger onto her desk.
She cracked open the heavy cover, swept her eyes over the faded black ink, and immediately began to work.
Her fingers flew across her keyboard with terrifying, rhythmic speed. The clatter of her keys echoed through the silent floor like a fast war drum.
She didn't pause to drink water. She didn't look up at the rain hitting the glass. She didn't let out a single sigh.
Inside his glass office, Jayden stood by his window, a crystal glass of bourbon resting in his hand. But his dark eyes weren't looking at the city. He was staring at Diana.
He watched the sharp, focused glare in her brown eyes, the subtle curve of her neck as she leaned over the yellowed pages, and the fierce spirit radiating off her fragile body.
She wasn't weeping. She wasn't begging for mercy. She was conquering his impossible task line by line.
His inner wolf growled with deep fascination. He had brought her here to break her, to tame her, to punish her for having another man's child...
...but watching her work with such fierce intelligence only made his possessive hunger burn out of control.
By four-thirty, thirty minutes before the deadline, Diana typed the final period into her document.
She printed out a neat, perfectly formatted forty-page summary, bound it in a leather cover, and stood up from her desk.
She walked straight into Jayden’s office, her heels clicking firmly against the hardwood floor.
She placed the leather folder on his obsidian desk, refusing to let the intimidating Alpha see her sweat.
"Translated, cross-referenced, and audited," Diana said softly, leaning over his desk to look him straight in the eyes. "Is there anything else you require, boss?"
Jayden looked from the folder up to her flushing cheeks, his silver-amber eyes burning with a dark, dangerous promise.
