Chapter 1 of My Alpha Abandoned Me to Save His Mistress

The moon was full above the ceremonial clearing, and I stood in white at the base of the stone, waiting for my mate.

Three hundred wolves of the Ironridge Pack stood in concentric rings around the clearing, their faces lit silver. I could feel them watching me. I had felt them watching me fifty-five times before. Tonight, I told myself, would be the fifty-sixth and the last in the only way I had ever allowed myself to imagine — the night Nikolas Bishop, Alpha of Ironridge, finally placed his hand on mine over the ceremonial stone and made me his Luna.

Seraphine was quiet inside me. She had been quiet for a long time. I had stopped asking her what she thought of the dress, the flowers, the vows. The last time I had asked, she had not answered.

Nikolas crossed the clearing toward me in his ceremonial black. He was beautiful the way he had always been beautiful — broad-shouldered, easy in his own authority, the kind of wolf the pack instinctively turned toward. When he reached me, the bond hummed between us, low and warm. He smiled.

"You look like a Luna," he said softly.

I did not smile back. I had stopped doing that around the thirtieth ceremony. He didn't seem to notice.

He raised his hand toward the stone.

Then his eyes went somewhere else.

I knew the look. I had memorized it across five years. The faint slackening of the jaw, the focus pulling inward, the small involuntary tightening at the corner of his mouth. A mind-link, ragged and loud, splitting open in his head.

Jasmine.

I did not need to hear it. I knew the cadence of her howls by now. Tonight's would be the worst yet — they always were, when the audience was largest. Probably a claim of going rogue. Probably the border.

Nikolas's hand paused above the stone. His eyes came back to me, and for three full seconds he looked at me with the expression of a man performing a calculation he had already finished.

"I have to —" he started.

I said nothing.

He turned. He walked off the ceremonial platform. He crossed the clearing in long, certain strides, and at the edge of the tree line he shifted mid-step and was gone into the dark before the pack had finished registering what was happening.

The silence that followed was not silence. It was three hundred wolves all breathing at once and none of them looking at me directly.

I stood at the stone alone.

One minute. The Beta, Marcus Webb, took a half-step forward from the front rank and then stopped himself. His face was the color of ash.

Two minutes. Somewhere in the third ring a wolf I had known since I was nineteen looked at the ground.

Three minutes.

And inside my chest, in the place where the bond lived, something I had been carrying for five years quietly set itself down.

Seraphine moved.

It was not a roar or a surge. It was the smallest, most precise stirring — a wolf lifting her head from a long sleep. *Now,* she said. The first word she had spoken to me in months.

I stepped forward. I placed my palm flat on the ceremonial stone where his should have been. I lifted my face to the moon, and I opened my mouth, and I said the words.

"I, Waverly Stevens, reject you, Nikolas Bishop, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack, as my mate."

The bond did not unravel. It broke. A clean, white blade of pain drove through my sternum and out my back, and I felt every thread of five years sever at once. Somewhere far away in the trees, I felt him stagger.

I did not fall.

I took my hand off the stone. I walked down the ceremonial path through the parted ranks of the Ironridge Pack, and not one wolf in three hundred said a word. I felt their eyes on the white of my dress until the trees closed behind me.

The pack house was dark when I let myself in. I did not turn on the lights. I went upstairs to the room I had shared with him and I took down a single canvas bag from the closet.

I packed without hurrying. Two pairs of jeans. Three shirts. The boots I trained in before I stopped training. A photograph of my mother I did not look at as I laid it flat against the cloth. I left the dresses he had bought me. I left the jewelry. I left the framed picture from our pack's solstice gathering where I was smiling and he was looking at his phone.

I was zipping the bag in the kitchen when the front door opened.

He came in carrying the forest on him — pine, damp earth, and underneath it, sharp and unmistakable, the residue of Jasmine's distress on his skin like cheap perfume.

He stopped in the kitchen doorway and looked at the bag on the counter, and his face did something almost tender.

"Waverly," he said, and his voice had the warm, patient note he used to settle pack disputes. "Sweetheart. You don't mean it."

I looked at him.

I reached into the side pocket of the bag and took out the pack pendant — silver, the Ironridge crest, the cord worn soft from five years against my collarbone. I set it down on the kitchen counter between us. It made a small, definite sound against the stone.

I did not speak.

I picked up my bag. I walked past him into the front hall, and out the door, and down the gravel path under the moon.

Seraphine did not make a sound. She did not need to. She was awake.

Sorry My Alpha Mom, I Was Born Broken
Sorry My Alpha Mom, I Was Born Broken
I was born broken. My Alpha mother was the one who branded me. She said emotion was a sin. A weakness. Especially for a werewolf. Especially for an Alpha’s heir. The day we were born, she clamped emotion-suppressing collars around our necks. Mine and my twin sister's. The slightest flicker of emotion, and the collar flashed red. My mother would then push the button, injecting me with a diluted "silver solution" to suppress my feelings. But my sister Cassia's collar? Always a calm, steady blue. Even when she shattered Mom's precious moonstone, it just pulsed gently. And me? I’d just whisper, "Mom, the thunder scares me," and my collar would erupt in a violent red. Then came the sting of silver poison burning through my blood.. I used to argue. But Mom always said the same thing. "The data doesn't lie. Pain is a teacher. This is for your own good." After thousands of these injections, I started to believe it, too. That I was born out of control. The night of the alliance's Moon Goddess Festival, Mom was taking my sister to the rooftop party. Something scared me during the day. The collar flashed red, and my mother started the punishment. But this time, the collar malfunctioned. It shot a dose a thousand times stronger into my neck. I collapsed on the carpet, begging, "Mother, the collar... it hurts so much... help me." My collar was flashing a frantic red. My mother just looked down at me, drenched in a cold sweat, and pressed the button for the maximum dose. "You'd lose control like this just for attention? You're a lost cause." She turned, took my sister, and slammed the door. I couldn't help but think, Mom must be right. The collar is red. It doesn't really hurt. I'm just being dramatic, looking for pity again. I'm sorry, Mom. In my next life, I'll be the perfect daughter you always wanted.
