Chapter 2
I quickly wiped away my tears and called Pierre.
It took a long time for the call to be answered. I choked up and said, "Pierre, where have you been? Our child is gone."
After saying that, tears slid down my face.
In no time, someone spoke up on the other end of the phone and it was a strong female voice.
"Gone? It's good that it's gone. You're planning to get married because of you're pregnant, but now the child is gone, that's just perfect!" Her voice was filled with joy.
I froze in place. This voice was Eleanor.
I sorted out my emotions and politely said, "Auntie, please give the phone to Pierre and I'll talk to him."
However, she said, "My son is getting engaged to Clara, so he doesn't have time to care about your trivial matters. He is toasting now. Do you want to attend the engagement party?"
There was even Pierre's voice on the other end of the phone saying, "Please enjoy the food and drinks."
I thought of what the girl said before. "Your husband will try his best to come over."
I was still thinking about him. What could be more important than my car accident?
But now I got the answer.
My brain went blank and the string in my mind suddenly snapped.
I casually hung up the phone and calmly said to the nurse, "I'll take care of it."
Hearing this, the nurse looked at me with compassionate eyes and said, "Then give me your phone. You can pay the bill in our mini app. I'll help you with the process."
This was the second sympathetic gaze I received after I woke up. In their eyes, I seemed very pitiful.
After she left, I quickly checked my social media on my phone.
As expected, Clara posted a photo of herself with Pierre and a caption that said she was engaged to the person she grew up with since childhood.
My fingers trembled slightly and the pain after the anesthesia came back, but I lost consciousness because of this photo and caption.
I learned about Clara from Eleanor. In her words, she was a PhD who returned from overseas. She was an excellent and independent girl.
Whenever talking about her, Eleanor would insult me and say that Clara was not a cheap girl like me, who only knew how to use Pierre's money every day.
After saying that, Eleanor glared at me. But instead of refuting his mother's words, Pierre showed a doting smile when his mother mentioned Clara.
"This girl has always liked to be with me since she was child. I told her that boy and girl should not be intimate with each other, but she doesn't look like a young girl at all. Now she has grown into a mature girl."
Later on, Clara often appeared in Pierre's and my life and became the third person between us.
When Clara was sick, he was taking care of her. When there was a power outage at Clara's house, he was accompanying her. In order to reassure me, Pierre even asked me to go with her, but I refused. So I thought it was just a sister's dependence on her brother.
However, I did not expect Pierre to tell me that she confessed her feelings to him. He asked me how to reject her without hurting her feelings. He did not want her to be hurt.
I was stunned. I should have thought of it earlier. They were childhood sweethearts, so it was normal for Clara to have such thoughts.
I told him to reject her directly without leaving any mercy on her, so that she would give up on him.
Unfortunately, I doubted Clara's character in my heart. Pierre already had a girlfriend, but she still wanted to confess her feelings to him. Her thoughts were almost written on her face.
Later, after he rejected her, Clara disappeared from our life for a short time, but I could clearly see the man's restlessness.
He was often lost in thought while having meals with me, then while flipping through photos in albums from time to time and in some cases letting out a faint sigh.
I thought Clara would stop bothering us, but not long after, Pierre was in a good and bright mood again.
Chapter 3
He excitedly asked me to go out. "Sophia, I've booked a restaurant. Today we'll have dinner together with Clara and I'll officially introduce her to you."
Although I did not want to, I still nodded because I wanted to see the girl who had been by Pierre's side since childhood.
When I arrived, I found that she was a lot different from what I had imagined. I thought she was a sweet girl, but she had a neat short hair and had a cold and cynical face.
Yet she smiled with joy when she saw Pierre.
After we sat down, he began ordering some dishes. "Garlic butter baguette, wild mushroom cream soup, green salad, escargot, medium rare beef tenderloin steak, baked ribs and salmon with lemon."
"Alright, that's all for now."
I looked at him in confusion. I knew that salmon with lemon was my favorite and baked ribs were Pierre's favorites.
However, the other two things, escargot and wild mushroom soup, I once clearly said that I did not like to eat them, so who did he order them for?
Within a few minutes, I got the answer.
"Pierre, you ordered all the dishes I love to eat. You're so kind."
After saying that, she stretched out her palm. Pierre smiled affectionately and patted her palm gently.
Seeing it, I felt a deep sense of sadness in my heart.
Pierre was so considerate to her that he even remembered her favorite dishes.
In the dining table, I also felt that the way they got along was not like that of ordinary friends and Clara even confessed her love to him.
So it was hard for me not to overthink.
Just as we enjoyed the dishes, Clara brought up their childhood topics from time to time.
He responded to her with a smile in his eyes and I could not get a word in.
I felt like I was a stranger between them. Just seeing their interaction, I was uncomfortable, so I tried to enjoy my meal in silence.
Once in a while, I glanced at Pierre. He did not seem to notice my discomfort and instead, continued chatting with Clara cheerfully.
They even had more topics to talk about than Pierre and I.
At this time, Clara gave me a provocative look, as if to say, "He and I grew up together as childhood sweethearts. How can you, an outsider, compare to me?"
After having dinner, I clearly told the man.
"I don't like you come into contact with Clara. Don't you think your way of getting along with her is like that of a couple? When you walk on the street, those passers-by say that you two are a couple. Besides, she has confessed her love to you, can't you completely cut off contact with her?"
However, he responded, "Is it because I didn't take your feelings into consideration at the dinner table today?"
"I had a good chat today, but I won't do that next time. I rejected Clara for you, what else are you thinking about?"
After saying that, he added lightly. "If I could be with her, I would have been with her a long time ago and there would be no place for you."
It was that sentence again. I had heard him say it at least five times.
What I despised the most was people acting like boyfriend-girlfriend under the guise of being friends.
So I broke up with him, but he panicked.
For my sake, he deleted all contact information with Clara and promised me that he would not contact her again.
At that time, I easily forgave him. After all, he chose me between me and his childhood sweetheart.
But it was not until Pierre told me in tears, "Sophia, Clara ... something happened to her."
When I came back to my senses, it was already evening. I saw Pierre arriving late at the door of the ward.
There were beads of sweat on his head and when he saw me, his eyes were full of guilt.
"Sorry, Sophia, I'm late."
After seeing him, I did not have the desire to ask for his comfort. It was endless disappointment and despair.
For countless moments in the ward, I had been thinking that perhaps this child should not have been born in the first place.
With this child, Pierre and I had an inexplicable bond, but now that it was over, the bond was gone.
I could break up with him with peace of mind.
I turned my head away in disappointment, not even wanting to ask him what the engagement party was about.
Perhaps he knew that he was truly unforgivable this time, so he rushed to the stool next to me and sat down.
He said with a trembling voice, "I'm sorry, I went to negotiate a contract with a client and accidentally got drunk, so I came late."
As I watched him tell me a lie with a poker face, my heart sank into an ice cellar in an instant.
I stared at that face carefully, I did not know why, it made me feel so strange. He seemed to be not the Pierre I had known before.
I clearly told him that I hated lie the most.
He also promised me that he would never lie to me and if he did, he would be struck by lightning. Unfortunately, when he said these words, the lightning did not strike him.
I sneered and said, "Did you forget that I have Clara's social media circle of friends?"
I knew Clara sent it to me on purpose and she was afraid that I did not see it.
But fortunately, I saw it, otherwise I would not have known that they were so disgusting.
Pierre suddenly panicked. He quickly explained to me that he did not mean to deceive me and he was afraid that I would be angry if he told me.
I almost squeezed out these words from my mouth. "Pierre, our child is dead! But you are happily holding an engagement party with your childhood sweetheart!"
After I said that, I could not stop laughing. It was just too ironic.
He did not dare to answer, so I said, "She is your future wife, so who am I? Why don't we break up and you go marry her?"
As soon as my voice came out, Pierre froze in place. After confirming that he had not heard me wrong, he hurriedly took out his mobile phone and said, "Sophia, don't rush to make a decision. If you don't believe me, I'll call Clara."
The phone call was answered shortly after and he anxiously said to the other end of the phone, "Clara, Sophia has misunderstood. Please explain to her quickly."
