Chapter 2

Caroline hails a taxi that will take her to the mansion, and the ride feels endless, perhaps because of the fear of knowing she is so far from her children in the midst of a tense situation.

"Sir, is it still far?" she asks, seeing that 20 minutes have passed.

"We're about to enter, ma'am. The mansion is secluded because it has a private beach. Are you going to work at that mansion? They say the employees don't last because the owner is very demanding."

"Yes... Poor thing, my husband must be desperate to run away from that place. I'm not here to work; I've come on an urgent matter."

"That's good, because a young woman as lovely as you-and I say this with all respect-shouldn't be subjected to humiliation. Done, we've arrived." Caroline is surprised to see the mansion; it looks like a palace. "This is the best mansion in Santorini."

"It's beautiful, thank you, sir." Caroline pays the taxi driver, then takes a deep breath before passing through the large, luxurious gates, which are open.

She walks quickly to reach the great door, feeling her heart is about to burst, for the emotions are so overwhelming that if she loses her balance, she might fall into the darkness of pain.

Upon ringing the doorbell three times in a row, she waits impatiently, looking around; it is the perfect mansion, straight out of a princess story like the ones she reads to Aileen.

Perhaps it's her impatience that makes the wait for the door to be opened feel endless, so she rings the doorbell again, but this time twice. "Isn't there anyone to open the door!?" The irritated voice of a woman echoes in the great hall. Upon opening the door, Caroline looks at her with worry. "Why are you ringing the door like that?" The woman looks at her with disdain, then from head to toe, showing her contempt because she perceives how poor Caroline is.

"Excuse me, miss..." she is interrupted.

"Ma'am! For your information, now tell me, who are you? What are you doing here? Oh, of course! By your appearance, I perceive you're the new employee, well, hurry up, you have a lot of work; there's a special dinner tonight."

Caroline, seeing that the brown-haired woman was about to leave her alone, hurries to speak. "Excuse me, ma'am, I am looking for Lisandro Caristeas. I know he is here; this is the address I have. Please call him; I urgently need to speak with him." She looks at her nervously.

But Caroline's request makes the woman stop and turn to look at her with intrigue. She only sees Caroline for the first time, and her presence bothers her. "Why are you looking for my husband?" she asks with arrogance, raising an eyebrow, shooting that sharp look because she dislikes a common woman looking for her husband.

"Husband?" Caroline feels as if she has been slapped on each cheek. "There must... there must be a mistake," she denies with her head and feels like she is running out of air.

"Are you deaf? My husband! I am Mrs. Caristeas," she gesticulates, never ceasing to look at her with disdain because, even though Caroline's clothes indicate she is poor, her natural beauty is something that attracts and eclipses any woman-in this case, Irene de Caristeas.

She feels as if her heart is being grabbed and squeezed. It seems as if the earth is shaking. "Answer! Why are you looking for my husband?" At that moment, a white Ferrari arrives, from which Lisandro Caristeas himself steps out, making the moment even more catastrophic.

The man is dressed very elegantly, nothing like how he dresses when he is with Caroline. He hasn't even noticed the situation. "My love!" Irene runs into Lisandro's arms, and he finally looks at the woman who is standing with her back to him.

Caroline feels the earth tremble, her heart stop beating for seconds as she turns and looks at her husband, the father of her twins, with another woman.

When he looks at her, he turns pale, and they look at each other for a few seconds, knowing that his great facade has been ruined and that Caroline is hurt. "Darling, that woman is looking for you," she points to Caroline, who lifts her chin to prevent tears from welling up and to avoid showing weakness.

"Lisandro..." Caroline says his name with pain as her world slowly vanishes.

"Caroline..." Lisandro cannot believe it; it is her, the mother of his twins.

"Explain to me right now what is going on!" Irene demands, seeing the way they are looking at each other.

Caroline's honey-colored eyes fix on the ring Lisandro is wearing, a ring that indicates he is a married man. "Don't worry, Mrs. Caristeas. I was looking for your husband because..." She swallows. "...because he offered me the job. I need it urgently, but... it's better if I leave."

"Ah, that's it! My husband is very charitable; that's why I love him." She kisses him, and Lisandro does not return the kiss; his gaze is fixed on the woman whose eyes transmit the pain of his betrayal.

"Excuse me, I'll be leaving." Caroline doesn't even know where she got the strength to walk, because her legs were literally failing from how shaky they were, but her children need her, and the worst part is that she has no money to return.

But what she didn't expect was for him to grab her arm to prevent her from leaving. "Let's talk..."

However, she pulls away from his grip.

"I'm sorry, Mr. Caristeas, but my time right now is very important. Thank you for your charity." She quickens her steps to disappear from the place, but she couldn't contain her words before saying, "You know..." She turns to look at him and clenches her fists. "You're a hidden gold-digger, you're... you're a traitor." Taylor runs out without giving Lisandro time for an explanation.

"Lisandro, what's going on with that woman?" Irene senses something is wrong.

"Irene, not now, go inside the house, and we'll talk later."

"Is she your mistress? Is that true?"

"Stop fantasizing and don't bother me." Lisandro rushes out in search of Caroline, who is already running and crying like a little girl.

"Damn it!" he spat upon seeing the distance, but if he went back for his car, Irene would torment him with questions, so he made the decision to run after Caroline. He runs with all his might. "Caroline!" he shouts her name, which makes her hurry to run faster; she doesn't want to hear him, she doesn't want to see him. "Caroline, please, listen to me!"

But Caroline is not willing to do it. Lisandro is her first love, the love of her life; he was, she thought, the perfect man, and he turned out to be a disguise. Why did he lie? Not even she understands it.

Unfortunately, she trips over a stone and falls to the ground, injuring her knees, which begin to bleed from the impact of the blow, and there she stayed; she couldn't take any more; she lost her strength.

"Caroline," Lisandro catches up to her. "Are you hurt?" He tries to help her.

"Don't touch me!! Don't do it!" she screams at the top of her lungs, still crying, and looks at her knees.

"You're bleeding, let me take you to a clinic."

"No! I don't want to hear you! I don't want to see you! You have broken my heart."

"Everything has an explanation..."

"There's nothing to explain; what I heard and what my eyes saw is enough!" She stands up, but she is weak; she has barely eaten, and she ran a lot; she is exhausted. Therefore, Lisandro, seeing her stagger, takes her into his arms, holding her inches away from him.

"Caroline, you must listen to me," Lisandro looks worried.

"Be quiet!" She pulls away from his grip. "I told you that if you didn't love me, you should tell me so I could assimilate it and forget you, so I wouldn't feel this horrible pain that consumes my soul. Of course... I was never enough for you! Money matters a lot to you! You're with that woman because she looks rich, but of course... since I'm poor! I was just your toy!"

"Don't say that, Caroline, I know that what you have seen..."

"I don't want to hear your excuses! The only clear thing here is that you're unfaithful. I will rip you out of my heart, Lisandro, even though we have two children, that will be the only thing that unites us; I even suppose we're a nuisance in your life. Of course, if you live a great life, what else are you hiding? Do you have more children? You're an opportunist!"

"No, Caroline! It's not what you're thinking! I'm not what you say...! I know this is very difficult..." She interrupts him.

"I feel like I'm dying, Lisandro! I feel like I'm dying... But I will put aside this stupid feeling I have for you. I see now that all your supposed trips were to be with your wife, but you know what... it doesn't matter," she wipes her tears. "I only came to look for you because Conner needs you."

"What's wrong with my son?" For Lisandro, his children are everything.

"You'd know if you didn't have a double life," she says with pain. "Conner has been diagnosed with acute leukemia; he is very ill, and the treatment is costly. I only came to look for you so we could resolve it as the supposed family we are, but forget it, I will find a way to get my son through this, and you go back to your millionaire life."

"Caroline, just give me five months to be free, and we'll be together."

She stands up and didn't think twice before slapping Lisandro hard. "Cynic! Take this into account, Lisandro," she points at him. "You are the father of my children, nothing more, because if I had known you were married, I would never have gotten involved with you."

"You will never stop being mine, Caroline! And I will take responsibility for my son; I will cover the entire expense. I will send my man of trust."

"Your man of trust? Your son doesn't need a stranger; he needs you."

"Caroline, you're angry, and I understand, but the important thing is Conner. I'll make a call to get my private jet ready."

"Are you listening to yourself? You're a multi-millionaire! Who the hell did I fall in love with? Keep your rich life; I'm leaving!"

Caroline starts to walk, but Lisandro grabs her by the waist to prevent her from leaving, and she begins to scream desperately.

Patrick is a partner in the Art Museum, which is a business of the Caristeas family. The handsome young man is heading to the resort mansion because he has a concern he needs to clarify, so he drives his car at a moderate speed when his eyes fix on the situation between Lisandro and a woman completely unknown to him.

His relationship with Lisandro is a friendly one that arose from a bad decision. For that reason, he stops his car near the couple to help the woman who is struggling to break free from Caristeas's arms.

"Let her go!" he orders with authority, strongly pushing Lisandro and separating him from Caroline. When Lisandro sees that it is his worst enemy, Patrick, he becomes enraged.

"Don't interfere!" he points at him.

"You never change, Caristeas, always thinking you own everything. Are you alright?" he asks Caroline, who looks at Patrick, and he perceives the sadness in her gaze.

"Please, get me out of here," Caroline pleads, seeing that man as her only salvation in this heartbreaking moment.

"-No, Caroline! You are not leaving with him!" He quickly pulls her close by grabbing her hand so he can have her face-to-face.

"Leave me alone! Go with that woman! In the end... you're a married millionaire who can't be with a woman as simple as me."

"You are mine, Caroline, you belong to me, our children unite us forever, you can never run away from me, everything has a damn explanation!"
