Chapter 1 of After His Mistress Stole My Bracelet, I Called the Police on My Husband

I found it on a Tuesday.

Grayson had left for another client dinner—his third this week. He'd kissed my forehead on his way out, the same practiced gesture he'd been using for months. Years, maybe. I'd stopped counting.

"Don't wait up," he'd said, adjusting his cufflinks in the hallway mirror. "These pitch meetings run late."

I'd nodded. Smiled. Told him to drive safe.

The moment the door clicked shut, I went to his office.

I told myself I was just straightening up. That's what I did on nights like this—tidied the papers on his desk, aligned the pens, made everything look orderly for when he came home. It was a habit I'd developed over the years. A way to feel useful in a house where I'd slowly stopped mattering.

But my hands were shaking when I picked up the quarterly report.

Beneath it, half-hidden, was a manila folder. Unmarked. The kind of thing you'd overlook if you weren't looking. I hesitated for maybe three seconds. Then I opened it.

The first page was a financial restructuring document. Our company letterhead at the top. Grayson's signature at the bottom, dated two weeks ago. My name appeared in the third paragraph, my equity stake reclassified as "spousal contribution—non-operational." The margins were covered in handwriting I recognized immediately. Jaliyah's. Neat, efficient script suggesting percentage splits, asset transfers, buyout clauses.

I turned the page.

Printed text messages. A conversation between Grayson and a contact saved only as "J." The timestamps ran back six months.

*We'll have to be patient. She's not going to just walk away.*

*She doesn't have a choice. The restructure puts everything in my name. She'll get whatever I decide to give her.*

*What if she fights it?*

*She won't. She never does.*

I kept reading. My hands had stopped shaking. They felt very cold and very steady.

*Your mother called again. Asking when we're going to give her grandchildren.*

*God. What did you tell her?*

*The usual. That we're trying. That it's 'in God's hands.' She gave me another pamphlet about fertility clinics.*

*I'm sorry. I know she's awful about it.*

*It's fine. Honestly, it's almost funny at this point. The barren saint, trying so hard to fix herself.*

*Don't call her that.*

*Why not? It's what everyone's thinking.*

I read that line three times.

Then I closed the folder. Set it back exactly where I'd found it, beneath the quarterly report, half-hidden. I straightened the pens on Grayson's desk. Aligned the papers. Made everything look orderly.

Then I sat down in his chair and stared at the wall.

I don't know how long I stayed there. Long enough that the light outside shifted from dusk to full dark. Long enough that my legs went numb. I didn't cry. I kept expecting to, but nothing came.

I heard Grayson's car in the driveway a little after eleven. The engine cut. The door slammed. His keys jingled as he unlocked the front door.

"Esme?" he called out. "You still up?"

I stood. Smoothed my shirt. Walked into the kitchen.

He was loosening his tie, his jacket already draped over the back of a chair. He smelled faintly of perfume—something floral and young that I'd never worn. He smiled when he saw me.

"Hey," he said. "Sorry I'm late. Meeting ran long."

"It's okay," I said. My voice sounded normal. I was surprised by that. "How'd it go?"

"Good. Really good, actually. I think we're going to close the deal." He opened the fridge, pulled out a beer. "You eat yet?"

"Earlier."

"I'm starving." He glanced at me. "You mind heating up some of that pasta from last night?"

I pulled the container from the fridge. Spooned it onto a plate. Set it in the microwave and watched the numbers count down.

Grayson leaned against the counter, scrolling through his phone. He looked relaxed. Content. Like a man who had everything exactly where he wanted it.

The microwave beeped. I set the plate in front of him.

"Thanks, babe," he said, already digging in. He looked up at me between bites. "You okay? You seem quiet."

"I'm fine," I said. "Just tired."

"You should get some rest." He reached out and squeezed my hand. The same hand that had signed those documents. "Big day tomorrow, right? You've got that fabric supplier meeting."

"Right," I said.

He went back to his food. I watched him eat. Watched his mouth move. Watched the easy, unguarded way he occupied space in the kitchen I'd designed, in the house I'd helped buy, in the life I'd built.

Something behind my eyes quietly and permanently rearranged itself.

I didn't say another word. I kissed him goodnight—a reflex, mechanical—and went upstairs. Got into bed. Lay in the dark with my eyes open.

I did not sleep.

But I did not cry either.

Instead, I thought about the folder. The handwriting in the margins. The messages. *The barren saint.*

And I began, very carefully, to plan.

DIVORCE ME PAY ME BACK $1.5 BILLION FIRST!
For three years of marriage, Jett Whitfield has always been an exquisite but insignificant accessory beside the heir of the Vanderbilt family in New York's high society. Gentle, reserved and always impeccably presented at her husband's side, she is branded a "trophy wife" by the public, and even her husband is convinced she is nothing but a delicate vine clinging to the family for survival. When their marriage comes to an end, her husband casually slides a $5 million divorce agreement across the table, his tone as dismissive as if he were casting aside an idle collectible, convinced this sum is a generous reward for her three years of "companionship". Faced with this humiliating settlement, Jett neither begs nor argues. She simply reveals the fangs she has hidden for three years: she is the hidden mastermind behind the Vanderbilt empire's miraculous revival three years ago. When the dynasty was on the brink of total collapse, she injected secret capital with ruthless precision, revitalized its global industrial chain, and single-handedly pulled the family back from the edge of ruin. What no one suspects is that this seemingly fragile socialite is also "Phantom", a top predator in the dark web. Her capital maneuvers and intelligence deals once sent shockwaves through half the underworld. She tears up the $5 million agreement on the spot and lays down her only demand: to reclaim the 4% stake in the Vanderbilt Group that is rightfully hers — a holding valued at $1.5 billion. Her demand ignites four battlefronts at once. The arrogant Vanderbilt clan fights back ferociously to guard their family control; blood relatives turn on each other to carve up the fortune; a brutal legal battle over equity ownership unfolds in court; and long-dormant dark web enemies resurface, tracking Phantom's trail to settle old scores. From Manhattan's penthouse ballrooms to the shadowy depths of the underground web, from verbal sparring at family dinners to life-or-death struggles in the business arena, Jett sheds her docile facade completely. With the sharp edge of her true power, she tears through the hypocrisy of the wealthy elite, fighting her way through layers of siege to reclaim all the glory and authority that belong to her.
