Chapter 1 of After His Mistress Plotted My Professional Collapse, I Fought Back

I get to the clinic at eight forty-five every morning. Not eight fifty. Not eight forty-three. Eight forty-five.

I pull my files, I sit in the chair by the window, and I read. The morning light comes in flat and gray off the Seattle overcast, and the building is quiet except for the heat kicking on. Caroline is usually the first staff member in. She nods at me through the glass partition and I nod back and we don't talk, which is exactly how I like it.

This is mine. This routine, this room, this version of my life. I built it from nothing and I built it carefully, and for three years it has held.

I was reviewing a chart for my eight o'clock when the front desk buzzed back.

"Dr. Price? Your nine fifteen checked in a few minutes early. Lillie Hall, prenatal follow-up. She has her partner with her."

"Send them back," I said. My voice was level. It always is.

I set the chart down. I straightened my stethoscope. I stood up.

The door opened.

He walked in first. Lachlan Hall. Thirty-two years old, dark suit, the same watch he's worn since his father gave it to him at twenty-one. His hand was on the lower back of the woman behind him, guiding her through the doorway with the practiced ease of a man who believes he is taking care of something.

The woman was visibly pregnant. Maybe twenty-six weeks. She had Lillie's blond hair, Lillie's particular way of entering a room like she was expecting it to rearrange itself around her. Because it was Lillie. It was exactly Lillie.

The recognition moved through me like cold water. Fast, total, and then gone.

My hands did not shake.

"Good morning," I said. "I'm Dr. Price. Go ahead and have a seat."

Lillie looked at me. Not the way a patient looks at a doctor. The way a person looks at something they're trying to place. Her eyes moved across my face slowly, and I watched her almost get there and then not quite arrive. The name was wrong. The credentials were different. The hair was shorter. She filed it under almost-familiar and let it go.

Lachlan didn't look at me at all. He sat in the chair by the wall and checked his phone before it was even out of his pocket.

I asked every standard question. I noted every answer. I pressed the stethoscope to Lillie's abdomen with the same clinical precision I use on every patient, and I listened to the heartbeat of a baby I already knew was not Lachlan's, though he did not know that yet.

I scheduled the follow-up. I told them what to expect at the next visit. I held the door.

"Efficient clinic," Lachlan said on his way out, to no one in particular.

The door closed.

I stood with my back against it. I counted four seconds. Then I opened the next file.

---

That evening I called Forrest from my kitchen table.

"They came into the clinic today," I said. "Lachlan and Lillie. She's his patient now. Prenatal."

A beat of silence. Then: "Timeline?"

"Mine," I said.

He didn't push. He never does. We said goodnight and I hung up and sat there for a moment in the quiet of my apartment.

Then I opened my laptop, unlocked the file I have maintained for three years, and typed today's date at the top of a new section.

---

Lillie came back twice more over the next three weeks.

By the second visit, the almost-familiar had sharpened into something else. I could see it. She was watching my hands when I worked, watching the way I moved around the room. She couldn't name it. But she knew something was wrong the way animals know, before the weather turns.

Lachlan came to the second appointment. He checked his phone twice and told the receptionist on the way out that the parking validation process was inconvenient. Lillie touched the base of her throat with two fingers when she answered my questions about her supplement routine. I noted it.

I wrote everything into the file that night.

---

On a Sunday Forrest came by with Thai food and a manila folder.

He laid it out clean and simple, the way he does everything. Lillie's history. Two incidents from her university years abroad, both quietly settled, both following the same architecture as what she did to me. A pattern. A method.

And a woman named Joy Gonzalez. Former colleague. Same playbook. And she had kept her documentation.

"How long did it take you to find her?" I asked.

"Three weeks."

I nodded. I closed the folder.

"Find Marcus Webb," I said.

Forrest looked at me for a moment. Then he picked up his fork and said, "Already looking."

Outside, the Seattle rain had started up again, steady and gray against the window. I pulled the folder back toward me and opened it to the first page.

Three years, I had waited for the right moment.

This was it.
