Chapter 1 of Marrying The Cheating Ex's Billionaire Uncle

"Julian, let's get married," Seraphina said.

She spoke the words across the candlelit table of Mama Rosa's, a small Italian restaurant in Greenwich Village, her voice barely carrying over the clatter of cutlery and the roar of conversation around them. She had chosen this restaurant deliberately: cheap, shabby, perfect for a proposal location.

Julian sat opposite her, a charming smear of tomato sauce still at the corner of his mouth. He was wearing a faded Columbia University sweatshirt, the fabric worn thin at the elbows. He looked exactly like what he pretended to be: a hardworking graduate student, perpetually worried about tuition and deadlines.

Seraphina knew better. She had known from the very beginning that Julian Carlisle was the heir to the Carlisle empire—one of the most powerful business dynasties in New York. He was three years younger than her, and for three years she had enjoyed this feeling of being in love. She liked the way he looked up at her in the morning, still half-asleep and needing her to make the coffee. She liked the way he leaned into her on the couch, his head falling against her shoulder, trusting her to hold him. She liked being the older one, the steady one, the one he came to when he wanted comfort.

He was a puppy, and she had let herself be his leash.

She took a slow, deep breath. The air was thick with the scent of garlic and cheap wine. This marriage was a necessity. Her mother was gone, leaving her vulnerable to her stepmother and stepsister, who circled her like vultures. Marrying Julian Carlisle, heir to the Carlisle empire, was her fastest way out of this trap and her only chance to climb upward. And if she could do it with a man she actually cared about, wasn't that the best possible outcome?

Julian, however, was completely unaware of her words. He was launched into a passionate complaint about his thesis advisor, his voice full of righteous indignation.

"The man is a tyrant, Sera. A complete sadist." He stabbed his pasta with theatrical outrage. "And he says my methodology is 'fundamentally flawed.' Fundamentally! Can you believe that?"

Seraphina listened, her expression a practiced mask of sympathy. She knew for a fact that this same "tyrant" had been bowing and scraping to Julian at a Carlisle Industries charity gala just a few weeks ago. The performance was exhausting.

Perhaps a more forceful proposal was needed. She dabbed her lips with a napkin, a delicate gesture that cut him off mid-sentence.

"Julian," she began again, injecting a carefully constructed tremor into her voice. "We've been together for three years."

He blinked, caught off guard. Then a slow, affectionate smile spread across his face. "The best three years, Sera."

From her handbag, she retrieved a small, black velvet box. Her own heartbeat felt loud in her ears, a steady, cold drum against her ribs.

In front of a stunned Julian, she pushed her chair back. Then she did something that made several nearby diners gasp.

She knelt on one knee.

A few hushed whispers broke the silence. The couple at the next table stared, their forks frozen halfway to their mouths.

"Julian Carlisle," Seraphina said, her voice clear and steady as she opened the box. Inside, a simple, elegant platinum band—which she had redesigned from a piece of her mother's jewelry, the one thing she truly treasured—rested on the velvet. "Will you marry me?"

The smile on Julian's face didn't just fade. It shattered. Raw, undisguised panic flashed in his eyes, replacing the practiced affection.

His gaze darted around the restaurant, searching for an escape route. His mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. A fine sheen of sweat broke out on his forehead.

Seraphina remained on one knee, a gentle, hopeful smile fixed on her face. Her eyes, however, were as cold as ice, methodically observing his composure crumble. The whispers around them grew, morphing from admiration to confusion.

He finally moved, shoving his chair back with a screech of wood against tile.

"Sera, what… what are you doing? Get up!" he hissed, his voice a choked whisper of reprimand, not surprise.

She didn't move. She simply tilted her head, her expression shifting to one of innocent, wounded confusion. "You don't want to?"

The question was a needle, puncturing the last of his composure.

"I… we're too young, Sera! I haven't even graduated. I can't give you anything!" The excuses tumbled out, stale and unconvincing.

A silent, bitter laugh rose in her chest. Give her anything? This was a man whose closet was filled with bespoke suits and whose garage housed a collection of limited-edition sports cars.

Slowly, she rose to her feet, closing the ring box. Her face was a masterpiece of forced bravery—of a woman trying to hide her heartbreak. And the heartbreak, to her own annoyance, was not entirely an act.

"I'm sorry, Julian," she whispered, her acting flawless. "I was impulsive."

Relief washed over his face, so potent it was almost comical. He rushed to her side, taking her arm. "No, it's not your fault, Sera. I just… I need to use the restroom. I need a minute."

He fled toward the back of the restaurant without a backward glance.

Seraphina watched his retreating back. She sat down slowly, her fingers still wrapped around the ring box.

She had not anticipated being rejected so decisively—not that she hadn't considered the possibility, but she hadn't expected it to be this blunt. But sitting here now, in the wreckage of her own carefully constructed moment, she felt the sting more sharply than she'd anticipated. She told herself this was just a failed tactic, that she could still salvage things. So why did her hand shake?

Three years. They had been in a platonic relationship for three years, and she still couldn't tell where the strategy ended and the real feelings began.

Her phone buzzed in her handbag. She ignored it. It was probably Mr. Foster, the old family butler—the only person her mother had trusted, and the only person Seraphina still trusted now. He would want to know how it went.

There was no doubt about it—her proposal had failed. So be it. He had never once thought about marrying her.

She thought about Julian's performances. The way he used to wrap his arms around her from behind, rest his chin on her shoulder, and say, "When I make it, Sera, I'll take care of you. You won't have to work this hard ever again."

He played the broke college student. She played the bankrupt girl boss. Two performers, each with secrets the other couldn't see.

They had played each other. But she was the only one who had truly lost.
