Chapter 1 of Married to the Poor Boy Who Kept His Promise

1: 1

Seven days before the wedding, the hotel asked me to confirm the seating chart. Twelve tables.

A hundred and twenty seats, and the only name crossed out was my mother's.

Roland Head said, "My supervisor's bringing family last minute. Your mom can grab a bite back in the kitchen."

His mother picked up the thread. "A single mother sitting at the head table? It just doesn't look right."

This was the third time they'd changed the wedding.

The first time they cut my mother out of walking me down; the second time they barred her, a single mother, from receiving the newlyweds' tea; this time they hadn't even left her a seat.

I asked Roland, "So from start to finish, this wedding was never going to acknowledge my mother?"

He folded up the seating chart. "She sends you off, that's enough. Does she really need to get up on stage?"

Right in front of the hotel manager, I struck sixty names from the groom's side.

I slid the list away. "The banquet goes on as planned. The head table stays reserved for my mother."

Roland gave a cold laugh. "No groom, and you still think you're throwing a wedding?"

I opened the message I'd been holding for seven years.

"Who said the groom was still you?"

......

Roland reached over, took my phone, and glanced at the name on the screen.

"Lucius Delgado?"

He tossed the phone back on the table.

"That broke kid from high school who lived in the blacksmith's shop? Evelyn, if you're going to hire someone to play a part, at least hire someone respectable."

Seven years ago, when Lucius left this city, he sent me one message.

He said that once he had his footing, if I still hadn't married, he'd line the road with red silk and carry my mother and me to the head table.

I never replied.

Roland tapped the seating chart on the table.

"Manager Walker, don't mind her."

"She's just throwing a fit before the wedding. Handle the list the way I told you."

"Save the center table for Director Lawrence. It's not every day he agrees to show up."

Virginia Lambert jumped in at once.

"Director Lawrence coming is more than the Head family deserves."

"Your mother reeks of cheap frying oil. Sit her dead center and she'll ruin the luck of the whole room."

"We're trying to teach you some sense."

I looked at the seating chart in Roland's hand.

Our second year together, he'd stood at my mother's breakfast stand eating a pastry and said, in his own words,

"When we're married, I'll treat your mom like my own mother."

"On the wedding day, she gets the highest seat at the head table and the biggest gift envelope."

Now she didn't have a single seat at all.

I turned to Manager Walker.

"The reservation number starts with three-one-oh, last four digits six-one-nine-eight."

"The last four of the payment card are three-zero-seven-six. Please pull up the contract."

He went to the computer and had the order up in moments.

"The contract signatory is Ms. Evelyn Joyce."

"The eighty-thousand-dollar deposit was paid by card by Ms. Eleanor Fox."

He looked at Roland.

"Mr. Head, you're not the signatory and you're not the payer. You don't have the authority to change the seating chart."

The smile went off Roland's face.

"I'm the groom. How do I not have the authority?"

"The banquet contract recognizes only the signatory."

"To adjust the list, you need Ms. Joyce's consent first."

Virginia slapped the table.

"She's about to be part of the Head family. Her money is my son's money, and so is her mother's!"

Manager Walker didn't respond to her. He only asked me,

"Ms. Joyce, are you certain you want to cancel the sixty seats on the groom's side?"

"I'm certain."

"And the sixty open seats?"

I opened my contacts.

"Twenty from my teaching department, twenty-six longtime neighbors my mother knows from her business, and the students and parents she's looked after over the years."

"I'll send you the list tonight."

Roland clamped a hand over my phone.

"Are you done making a scene?"

"Filling a five-star hotel with vegetable sellers and shoe repairmen. You're not embarrassed?"

I pushed his hand away.

"They see my mother and they call out to her like family. They wouldn't shove her into the kitchen."

"You'd really call off the engagement over one seat?"

"It's not one seat."

Roland stared at me.

"Two days from now you'll come begging me."

"The wedding's in seven days."

"Don't try to scare me with that."

"You're thirty-two, and you come from a single-parent home. Besides me, who's going to take on your mess?"

I didn't answer. I looked down and opened my chat with Lucius.

"Seven years ago you said you'd line the road with red silk and carry my mother to the head table. Does that still stand?"

After the message went through, Virginia leaned in to look.

"You actually sent that?"

"I'd love to see which fool dares to take a woman the Head family threw away."

Less than half a minute after it sent, Lucius replied with two words.

"It stands."

Two minutes later, Manager Walker's phone rang.

He finished the call with the finance office and looked at me.

"Miss Joyce, the hotel's corporate account just received a thirty-thousand-dollar additional payment. Payer, Lucius Delgado. Note reads, groom's deposit."

Roland's face tightened, then he burst out laughing.

"Thirty grand buys you a groom now?"

"Evelyn, all those years teaching and what you learned was how to pay for actors."

"On the wedding day, you can see for yourself."

"I don't have time to stand around while you humiliate yourself."

He picked up his car keys and pulled Virginia toward the door.

Virginia was still cursing when she reached it.

"She'll be back begging you tonight."

"A fatherless old maid, actually thinking people are lining up for her."

After the door shut, I handed the new list to Manager Walker.

The moment I stepped out of the hotel, I heard Roland leaving a voice message in the family group chat.

"Let her have her tantrum."

"The keycard to the wedding suite gets shut off tomorrow. Starve her three days and she'll learn who runs this household."

I saved the voice message and picked up my car keys.

The things my mother paid for were still inside.
