Chapter 1 of Married in front of my husband's first love's grave

The paper grocery bags cut into my fingers. I pushed the front door of our estate open, shifting the heavy weight of the vegetables and wine I had bought for our anniversary dinner. The house was quiet. Too quiet for a Tuesday afternoon.

Then I heard the wet, slapping sounds coming from the living room.

I froze in the foyer. A woman's high-pitched moan echoed off the marble walls, followed by a harsh, male grunt.

"Fuck, Hannah, spread your legs wider," a familiar voice growled.

My stomach plummeted. I dropped the bags. Glass shattered against the tile, red wine bleeding across the pristine white floor.

I sprinted toward the living room, my vision blurring with sudden tears.

My husband, Irving, the billionaire heir I had loved for six years, had a woman pinned over the back of our custom velvet sofa. His pants were bunched at his ankles. He was thrusting into her hard, his hands gripping her bare hips, fingers digging into her skin.

"Irving!" I screamed, the sound tearing at my throat. "What the fuck are you doing?"

He didn't scramble. He didn't jump back in panic. He simply stopped moving, his jaw set, and pulled out of her. He reached down, yanking his trousers up and buckling his belt with steady, practiced movements.

The woman beneath him groaned, shifting her weight. She sat up, clutching her torn blouse over her bare breasts.

She turned her head. Her gaze met mine.

All the air vanished from the room. My knees buckled, and I slammed my hand against the doorframe to stay upright.

Those eyes. That sharp jawline. The exact face I had seen in hundreds of hidden photographs tucked away in Irving’s private study.

"Hannah?" I choked out, my voice trembling.

She was supposed to be dead. Irving’s first love, the woman whose ghost had haunted every corner of our marriage, was sitting in my living room.

"Why are you crying, Thea?" Irving asked. His tone held no guilt. He didn't even look at the mess of groceries in the hallway. "You knew this arrangement was always temporary."

"Temporary?" I wiped aggressively at the tears spilling down my cheeks. "I am your wife! We have a son!"

"We have a piece of paper," Irving corrected coldly. He stepped around the sofa, placing himself between me and Hannah. "Let’s get a divorce. Hannah is back."

The words struck me like a physical blow.

"You're throwing me away?" I asked, my chest heaving. "Just like that? After everything I did for this family?"

"I never promised you forever," Irving replied.

Before I could hurl another accusation at him, the heavy oak front door swung open again. The sound of small, rapid footsteps echoed down the hall.

"I'm home!" a bright, childish voice yelled.

My five-year-old son, Joe, came running into the living room. His school uniform was slightly wrinkled, his backpack bouncing against his small shoulders. I wiped my face frantically, trying to shield him from the nightmare unfolding in front of us.

"Joe, honey, go back outside with the nanny," I ordered, stepping forward to block his view.

He didn't even look at me. He dodged right past my outstretched arm.

"Mommy!" Joe squealed, his face lighting up with pure, unadulterated joy.

He sprinted past Irving and threw himself directly into Hannah’s arms.

I stared, completely paralyzed. My own son, the child I had carried, the boy who barely looked at me during the five years I spent raising him, was burying his face into the neck of a stranger.

"Did you miss me, baby?" Hannah asked, her voice soft and sweet. She stroked his hair, completely ignoring her disheveled state.

"I missed you so much!" Joe giggled, squeezing her tight. "Daddy said you were coming home today."

A cold sweat broke out across my spine. The ice spread through my veins, freezing every emotion until only a hollow void remained.

"Daddy said?" I whispered, staring at Irving.

Irving crossed his arms. "Joe knows who his real mother is."

"I am his mother!" I shrieked, stepping toward them. "I gave birth to him! I stayed up with him every time he was sick while you were off at your corporate retreats!"

Joe finally turned his head. He glared at me, his small face twisting into a scowl that perfectly mirrored his father's.

"You aren't my real mom," Joe snapped. "Daddy told me you were just a babysitter. My real mom is Hannah."

The floor tilted beneath my feet. Five years. I had spent five years trying to win the affection of a child who treated me like a ghost. Now, the bitter truth stared me right in the face. They had planned this. They had always planned this.

Hannah gently pushed Joe toward the hallway. "Go play in your room, sweetie. The adults need to talk."

Joe nodded obediently and scurried away, not sparing me a single glance.

Hannah stood up. She smoothed down her ruined blouse, buttoning the few remaining buttons with calm precision. She walked around the sofa, stopping right beside Irving. He immediately wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close.

"Thea, I'm sorry," Hannah said. Her eyes were wide, brimming with a perfectly calculated mock-pity. "I didn't actually die in that crash."

I clenched my fists. "Where were you?"

"Switzerland," she answered smoothly. "I went there for treatment. It took a long time, but I'm completely cured now."

She leaned her head against Irving's shoulder.

"You kept my place warm," Hannah continued, her lips curving into a small, victorious smile. "But I'm healthy again. You need to pack your things. You should give Irving back to me."

I looked from her triumphant face to Irving's indifferent stare. The man I had slept beside for years was looking at me like I was a stranger who had overstayed a welcome.

"Give him back?" I repeated, a dark, bitter laugh tearing its way out of my throat.

Irving pulled a folded document from his jacket pocket and tossed it onto the coffee table.

"Sign the papers, Thea. You have one hour to get out of my house."

I stared at the divorce agreement, the bold black letters mocking my entire existence. I reached out, my fingers hovering over the paper, when a sharp, unfamiliar voice rang out from the front door.

"She won't be signing anything today, Irving."
