Lola is not your normal average teenage girl.

She has always known that her family is part of the Mafia.

A few days after her eighteenth birthday, she comes back from school and hear the most shocking news that leaves her frightened to the bone. She had been promised to the most ruthless man in the New York Family, the underboss and soon to be Boss, Dominiko Salvatore. And he is coming to collect what is His.

Chapter One

"This is a bad idea and you know it" I said to my best friends Chloe and Lydia.

How I allowed them to convince me that this was a good idea is beyond me.

"For the nth time you got to live a little" Chloe whispered.

"Yeah right, we'll probably get skinned alive, not if, but when we get caught," I reply in an equally low tone glancing about apprehensively.

"People escape all the time Dee, no one's ever gotten caught, this route is the shit" That was Lydia, she walked on ahead of us, a flashlight in hand.

"Yeah," I wiped my palm on the smooth material of my dress, "There's a first time for everything," I whispered back rolling my eyes.

Chloe and Lydia are my best friends, we've been through hell and back together which mainly consists of studying for difficult exams, cramming for tests, and breaking curfews. But what we were about to do right now was legit crazy.

It probably sounds like we're breaking out of prison or something, I know.

This is crazy, I'm crazy for agreeing to this plan which will only land me in hot soup.

We tiptoed quietly for the next few minutes, my heart jumping with every suspicious sound, more than once I was tempted to make a U-turn, the crazy as it sounded Lydia thought it'd be a great idea to go partying the night before our final exams, I didn't really want to go I just didn't want to stay back in our dorm room alone. Damn, who am I kidding?? I guess I loved the thrill of the danger of being caught, but I was really rethinking the whole thing.

They also dared me and I ain't no chicken.

And then I could see high brick walls. A few more steps and we were standing in front of steel doors instead of the usual titanium doors I was accustomed to seeing around the academy.

Lydia flipped off the flashlight she brought from our dorm room grabbed the door handle and eased the door open.

I half expected someone to appear from somewhere and yell 'busted' or something of that nature but nothing. The door was open and we could leave.

Lydia stepped out first, then motioned me along, I followed, and lastly Chloe.

"I told you we aren't going to get caught," Chloe said shutting the door as we began to walk down the highway further away from our school to where we'd get a taxi. Chloe had ordered a cab with her computer before we left.

So far, so good the plan was going according to plan.

A few vehicles drove past and I began to feel a little weird just standing at the side of the street, I moved from foot to foot, crossing my arms at the front as we waited for the taxi, Chloe and Lydia saying something about the driver being three minutes late as they stared at the watch on Lydia's wrist, and a black Jeep rolls to a stop. It looked new and shiny. Whoever had this car was pretty loaded.

Seconds later the tainted window lowered. The driver was a young man, I couldn't see him clearly because it was dark already, maybe early twenties, stuck his head out the window slightly, his arm over the wheel.

"Well, hello there beautiful, you girls going somewhere?" He asked in what I assumed to be a flirting voice.

"As a matter of fact, we are" Chloe answered with a flit of her hair, sticking out one long, toned leg that was currently in a mid-thigh red dress and black high stilettos.

I arched a brow in the darkness because I knew that look, it was the same one she used when she wanted to get her way with the guys at school.

She wasn't about to do what I think she was about to do, right?

"Aren't you too beautiful to be waiting? I can give you and your pretty friends a lift to wherever you're headed"

"Oh my God, that'd be great," she said with another flit of her blond hair.

What?! I almost screamed.

I so did not agree to this.

Getting in a stranger's car? That can go wrong in so many ways.

"What the heck is she doing?" I whispered to Lydia out the side of my mouth.

"Getting us a ride, that way we can save the taxi bill"

Is she high?

Both of them.

The guy said something along the lines of 'hop in' while opening the door to his back seat.

And my friend Chloe hopped right in, the little purse hanging over her shoulder bouncing at her hip as she moved in making space for Lydia who gave me a look as she got in.

"They are only giving us a ride to the club."

Yeah, that or sell us to traffickers, I didn't say that out loud, didn't wanna give them ideas.

Guess I didn't have much of a choice, I got in too, and slammed the door, the leather felt cool beneath my thighs, and a faint smell of something herbal like weed in the air.

"Who's your friend?" Lydia asks out loud.

That's when I noticed there were two guys in the car.

"Name's Jackson, you can call me Jack" the one in the passenger seat said sticking his hand behind.

Lydia leans forward and places her hand in his flashing him a generous amount of her chest.

Great, just great.

"And you?" the guy asks, and I feel his gaze move to me, my brows scrunch and I blink.

"This is Dee" Lydia supplied with a flick of her thumb in my direction and looked like she was trying not to laugh at my awkwardness.

The car begins to move.

A conversation strikes up between Chloe and the driver, I learn his name is Ryder. Lydia and Jackson seem to be having a great time getting to know each other but I mainly sit quietly thinking of how many ways this could go wrong.

We could probably end up dead in a ditch somewhere, drugged, violated, I mean these people could be rapists for all we know.

The ride went on for about forty-five minutes, how do I know? Okay, I might have been counting every passing second. My eyes flash to the time at the dash in between staring a our surroundings.

I guess the party was somewhere fancy because it looked like we were in the uptown part of New York I could see lots of tall buildings and lights, it was my first time seeing the city at night time, it was... a sight, I wished I could relax enough to enjoy it.

"How much longer is this going to take?" I ask in a low voice nudging Lydia with my elbow.

"We're already there," she inclined her head forward, her voice full of excitement.

Thank the Lord.

Opening the door, I came out first so Lydia could come out next but when she didn't, I looked back in the car and saw both her and Chloe typing on cell phones.

Guess they decided to give them their numbers too because I know for a fact that they didn't have phones, and the academy did not allow the use of cell phones in school.

But seriously, didn't they know anything about stranger danger?

I shook my head sadly, I'm the only sane one around here.

They came out a moment later grinning.

"Thanks for the ride honey" that was Chloe.

"Anytime" The driver, Ryder replied, then drove off.

We turned and began to walk across a large parking lot, I noted a lot of fancy cars, the paint job gleaming in the night lights.

It had to be a club from the lights and scantly dressed girls lining up at the entrance.

"You know you could have been nicer to them, right?" Lydia muttered.

"I didn't say anything."

"That's the point" she shot back.

I waved a hand "What was I supposed to say the both of you had it under control."

"Maybe offered your name so I shouldn't have had to come-"

"Girls! "Chloe cut in.

And I saw that we were standing in front of the bouncer at the entrance.

A beefy guy with slicked-back hair, an earpiece in his ear as he looked down at us. Well, that was embarrassing.

"Can I see some IDs?" He asked. That was forward.

We didn't bring any IDs not even fake ones. Or at least I didn't, in my defense, I didn't know we were going to a club. So, we've come all this way for nothing.

Why do I suddenly feel like crying?

"Nice to see you too Freddy" Chloe quipped. Did she know him? maybe she's been here before?

"Chloe? "He said but this time in a surprised voice.

"How do you not recognize me?"

She does know him. Leave it to Chloe to surprise me.

"Wow girl, How you being?" he asked dropping the stocky facade, "It's been long, two years now?" He asked.

They hugged the guy lifting her cleanly off her feet.

"I think they used to date," Lydia said beside me.

"Hm" was my only reply.

"These are my friends, Lydia and Dee," she said introducing us.

"Hello," we both say with a wave, I even managed a smile.

"Some kids from our school are having a party here, it's supposed to be a private room or something, we were hoping you'd let us in," Chloe said.

"Sure, I think it's the VIP section just keep it low-key, okay?"

"Thanks, Freddy you're the best," she said and after another hug and a swift kiss on his cheek, she linked our hands with hers and stutterers ahead.

As soon as we walked in, I was almost knocked on my butt by the loud music, the decor was really nice somewhat between gothic and erotic, with red and black leather seats, shiny table tops, hmm, nice, Looked like a normal club, not like I knew what a normal club looked like.

"Let's party!" Chloe yelled above the music walking towards where I guess is the VIP.

I could feel eyes on me, and lingering glances followed our little group as we moved, a few lifted their glasses in our direction in a toast.

The females looked mad at us, most of them were sending us death glares, what did we do to them?

Normally I'd shy away from so many eyes. Hell, the Dee from two years ago would run out of there with a gold medal-worthy speed.

But today, I want to be someone else and have fun like a normal teenage girl... Yeah, I can do that. No one knows me here and they'll never see me again.

The VIP section looked like the rest of the club only better, the sitting area was separated from the dance floor.

Then the bar.

It was exquisite.

There were lots of teenage people around partying I took it all in feeding my eyes. music streaming through the speakers, the floor vibrated slightly beneath my shoes from the base, a thrill shooting up my blood, this seems fun.

I was suddenly glad my friends talked me into coming. We looked at each other, sharing side grins.

Lydia leaned into me, shouting over the music, pointing "Let's go over there, I think I see Caleb,"

Now that I think of it, most of the teenagers looked familiar.

"Caleb!"

He turned from the group of guys he was with. "Lydia? You guys came" he asked

"Wouldn't miss it," Lydia answered and they did a high five.

"Hi, Caleb," I said.

"Dee?" He seemed shocked. His eyes wide.

"Yeap"

"I'm gonna get a drink," Chloe said walking away.

"Me too "Lydia followed.

Traitors!

"You look fineee Dee," Caleb said when we were alone swiping a hand over his lips as he gave me a deliberate once over. "Damn girl"

I flushed, heat rising to my face. Crap, good thing it was dark in here.

"Thanks, you look good too." And he did. In a black button-down shirt that hugged his lean build and dark jeans.

"Let me get you a drink, come," he said grabbing hold of my hand and tugging me along to the bar.

He pulled out a stool at the bar for me, and as I sit, my black tight mid-thigh sleeveless dress rode up.

"What do you want to drink?" his eyes were on my exposed thigh; I felt a bit uncomfortable.

"Hmm just coke" I replied

He leaned close to the bartender and told him my drink order.

"I'm really glad you came," he said sitting on the stool closest to me.

"Me too."

"So, what about college?" He asked atfer a few seconds of silence.

Like father will let me. Convincing him to allow me to enroll in the academy took a lot of insisting, begging, and tears from Mama. Almost everyone in the family is home-schooled. And I was too, until three years ago.

But I wasn't going to tell him that. "I'm not sure yet, you?" That seemed to take the spotlight from me because Caleb began to talk about himself. The bartender brought our drinks while Caleb was saying something about studying a business course.

I caught myself staring at his brown eyes more times than I'd like to admit.

His curly hair fell over his forehead almost covering his eyes. He is so cute.

"Hey Dee, I see you're having a great time," someone said directly behind me and I snapped my gaze from Caleb's face. Turning I see Chloe.

Her eyes were bright, a half empty glass in her hand. "Come do shots with us" She grabbed my arm and pulled me along.

"I'm not sure I want to drink," I said as she pulled me toward the booth with the rich kids. Don't get me wrong almost everyone in my school is an heir to some big corporation and comes from a wealthy family but these kids take wealth to another level.

"Hey everyone, remember my friend Dee?" Chloe yelled.

Some said 'hi' others ignored me but it's cool.

"Let's do shots" a girl yelled. Wait that was my friend Lydia. She was sitting on some guy's lap.

"Yeah!!!" The whole table agreed.

Chloe already parked her butt on some other guy's lap.

"Hey" someone called softly and I snapped my head up.

A guy I think his name was Michael smiled at me, he always hung out with the rich cool kids.

"Wanna sit?" He asked pointing at his left thigh.

What? "No," I said in a small voice.

"I won't touch you if that's what you want," he returned, a small smile tugged at the side of his lips.

God, he looked fine.

Why can't I be cool like Lydia and think of a flirty comeback?

I chewed on my bottom lip for a second, looked at my friends for help but they were caught up in conversations, I glanced back at the guy, he seemed cool, so I dipped my head, "Fine" Yeap" that's all I could come up with.

A waitress appeared and started handing out shot glasses filled with amber liquid.

F*ck this, I can be cool. I walked close to him turned around and lowered myself on his lap trying to ignore the heat in my cheeks and tried to ignore the fact that I was sitting on some dude I'd never spoken to before today.

"Here Dee" Lydia said passing me two glasses. I passed one to him taking a sip from mine. I squeezed my face as the liquid almost made my tongue fall off.

"What in the hell?" I said to nobody in particular.

"Not like that, you have to knock it back at once to feel the effect," a voice said from behind me with a hint of amusement.

I shot hi a look over my shoulder, "I'm not sure I want to drink this thing, it sucks."

Chapter Two

I think I'm drunk, am not sure, I've never been drunk before, I suddenly understand the word buzzed. I feel confident, like I can have the entire word at my feat.

I've done like seven shots of different brands of alcohol, it's probably eight or ten I'm not sure, I stopped counting at three.

"Oh my God you are so funny Dee." Chloe said laughing so hard at something I said.

"Shall we have another round?" A girl asked Abby, I think.

"Damn right, this one's on me, oh wait it's a party everything's free"" I said in a serious voice and the entire table burst out laughing so hard.

"I think you've had enough Dee" Michael the Guy who's lap I was sitting on said, his arm holding me down as I attempt to stand up.

"You think so?" I asked leaning my back on his chest.

"Yeap, I need some air, wanna come with me?" He whispered in my ear.

"Hmm" I agreed standing up and straightened my dress.

He grabbed my hand and lead me outside. The main club was packed as we walked pass it. People dancing on the dance floor.

"Think I can get some water?" I asked suddenly thirsty for real water.

"Of course. Come with me"

He led me through a bunch of people dancing and no, it was not fun. I could have sworn I felt someone grope my ass.

When we got to the bar Michael got me a glass if water.

I drank it down in a few seconds.

"Guess you were really thirsty?" He asked looking at me weirdly.

"Yeah" I looked up at him. he's so handsome, his blond hair almost covering his sparkly green eyes.

How did I not notice he was standing so close.

"You look really beautiful today Dee". He whispered and I feel heat rising to my face.

"How'd you know my name?" I blurt.

He looked taken aback for a few moments.

"We go to school together and I think you're pretty cool." He says slowly

"Thank you" I said looking away.

"I gotta go to the wash room" that's what drinking so much fluids do to you.

"Alright I'll wait for you here."

Turning around I looked for the wash room which was easy to find, did my business and got out.

As I was walked out back to the club, I spied Chloe and Lydia walking towards me, they were probably going to the wash room too.

"Hey Dee, you and that hottie was gone for a while, we had to see if you were okay." Lydia said, she didn't seem so drink.

"His name is Michael and you know it" I said as we walked toward the dance floor.

"He couldn't take his eyes off you" that was Chloe.

"You're both imaging things"

"Yeah, say what you want, shall we dance?" Lydia asked, it was more like a statement because she already began dragging both me and Chloe to the middle of the dance floor.

"Hell yeah!" That was Chloe.

I've never dances in public before but it's not like anyone knew who I am so heck yeah.

Chloe threw her hands in the air while rolling her hips.

Lydia did something similar both of them stood by each side of me. Like a protective stance, I was in the middle.

So, I decided to follow their lead. I didn't know the song, I'm not even sure the song was in English but it had a good beat and after a few seconds I was rolling with the beat.

My right hand in the air, the left on my waist while rolling my hips

The first song ended and another took it place, in the middle of the third song the crowd on the dance floor reduced. Only Chloe, Lydia and I. And a few couples here and there.

I could feel eyes on me it felt weird like a caress and for some reason I decide to look around.

My eyes came to a stop on a tall guy, wait, he seemed manly I'm not sure how old he might be. His face was really beautiful, strong jaws and high cheekbone, his lips were in pressed in a grim line so couldn't say, straight nose and his hair seemed gelled back.

His face was without expression, exactly what I'd call poker face, one I'd never be able to pull off even of my life depended on it.

But I don't think he'd ever look more attractive. Not like I know him or anything.

What bordered me was his eyes, they were so blue it looked fake. They seemed somewhat upset like mad about something. His gaze was so intense I wanted to look away and keep looking at the same time.

Only his eyes seemed to show any emotion. They were burning and so cold at the same time.

Staring into mine like he knew me.

Everything about him screamed Danger with a capital D. And I didn't need any sort of problems right now or ever.

"Look away Dee, do it now" I whispered to myself still moving with the song. I looked away.

I slid my gaze to the side towards the entrance of the club.

And landed on a girl around my age.

She seems mad at too, staring daggers at me, honestly if looks could kill, I'd be six feet under. Like I was her mortal enemy. I didn't even know her. But I couldn't care less.

There was something about her bleached blonde hair that seemed familiar I just couldn't put my finger on it.

And then it hit Me like a ton of bricks, that Blondie, I known her, its being about two years since I saw her. One of the reasons I left the family. My cousin Katharina.

I looked away quickly "f*ck" I cursed under my breath.

I had to get out of here, now. before she recognizes me.

Of all the clubs in New York she had to come to this one and today.

I looked for Lydia and Chloe but the seemed to be coupled up with some guys, when did that happen? I almost yelled. Maybe when I was staring at the guy in black like a creep. damn it!

Quickly looking for an escape route I decide to walk to the crowdy bar maybe I could blend in.

I must have done a bad job blending in or my plan sucked because just as I reach the bar someone grabbed my arm and turned me forcefully.

I almost lost my balance in the high heeled knee length boots, almost.

"You better stat away from my man you whore." I know that voice.

Looking up with a death glare Katharina was standing before me, fuming, if this was a cartoon she'd smoke coming out of her ears.

"And don't you fucking touch me or I'm going to bitch slap you into next week, got it?" I said in her face.

Her eyes widen.

"Lola?" She seemed shocked.

"Yes Kat?" I said flatly.

"What the hell are you doing here dressed like a whore?"

What a bitch! My dress was covering more skin than hers.

"What does it look like I'm doing? Watching TV?" I said in a sarcastic voice.

"Don't freaking talk to me like that does your mother know that you are whoring around instead of being in school, I mean I won't be surprised, you're both sluts" I didn't even wait for her to finish that sentence. Throwing my hand, I introduced my palm to her face and her head flew backwards.

Damn it my hand was on fire but it was so worth it.

She staggered for a moment and almost fell on her ass but caught a chair, steadying herself.

Immediately she got back on her feet and I knew the moment she jumped me. I wanted to duck or get out of the way but I knew I'd never move out of the way in time.

So, I closed my eyes waiting for all hell to break loose but she never made impact.

"Enough" someone snapped, the voice sent shivers down my spine. And I just knew without opening my eyes whom that voice belonged to.

"That stupid bitch hit me" kat yelled like an insane woman.

Opening my eyes, I realize why Katharina never made impact, someone was holding her down. The insanely beautiful man was standing a few feet from me. Thank God, I wanted to keep it that way.

"You dare to cause a scene here?" He asked in a deadly calm voice.

Good thing he wasn't directing the question at me.

"She started it!" She almost screamed.

"Geez no need to shout no one's deaf here you know?" I said in a low voice but apparently everyone heard me because I was now the center of attention.

I just had to open my big mouth.

"Get her out of here" he said not taking his eyes off me and the guy holding kat did just that, not asking any questions.

Whoever this man was he has a dont-mess-with-me vibe around him. And I, was just about to find my square root.

"Thank you" I said walking by him to get the heck out of here.

he grabbed my arm "Not so fast." I almost fainted.

I could have sworn I felt a zen from where his skin met mine. His hold was firm but surprisingly gentle.

"You're coming with me" he said and started walking out of the club.

"W-wh-hat? I-i em didn't do anything" I stammered.

Good work Dee, you just indirectly told him how scared you were.

Okay, deep breaths, think of something, He's almost at the door.

"Wait!" I said digging my heals.

He turned and raised an eyebrow in question, God, who does that?

"I em can't leave without my friends" I blurt, wasn't actually a lie.

"I'll send someone to get them." He turned and this time he didn't stop. When we got out, he walked towards a black car, and opened the passenger sit. No way I was going to agree to go anywhere with him. But I wasn't asked. One second, I was standing and the next I was in the car.

"Buckle up" was all he said before shutting the door.

What the hell?

A moment later he was in the driver's sit and the car began to move.

I felt uncomfortable being so close to him.

Alone with him.

A man.

"Who are you? Where are you taking me? Is it because I hit Katharina? I didn't mean to she just really pissed me off. Am sorry okay, now can you let me go?" I asked in a rush. Okay I was freaking out.

"Do you always ask so much questions?"

"No"

"Good"

"Will you answer them?"

"No"

"But why?"

"Cause I'll be the one asking the questions, got it?"

I don't think he was asking but I nodded anyway.

"Good. What is your name?"

"Dolores". I never use my given name but hell if I was gonna lie to him. I Was scared to my bones.

He seemed satisfied with my answer.

"Now explain to me why the hell were you out dancing in a club, dressed like that" he said in a Calm voice that made me shiver.

Why was he asking?

"I don't understand what you mean."

He packed the car in what looked like an empty lot.

He opened his door and got out. I did the same. Only I lean my back on the car, after a few seconds he was standing in front of me.

"Why aren't you in school?" How did he know about that? Only a few people in the family knew about my schooling.

"I snuck out" I said in a small voice.

"Why?" I couldn't hold his cold gaze so I looked away.

"Nothing" I said in a small voice.

"I won't ask again" he glared down at me.

"I wanted to have fun like a normal person. please don't tell anyone you saw me" his glare lessened.

"How many times?" God he was standing so close, did he have to be so close?

"What?"

"How many time have you gone out dressed like that" his eyes slid down my body lingering in certainly places like my chest, waist, hips and legs. His gaze felt felt like a touch and I suddenly felt self-conscious.

"Why do you care?" I almost yelled in frustration. He made me feel really uncomfortable.

He gave me a pointed look.

"It's the first time" I said looking away.

"Don't lie to me"

"I swear"

Something vibrated. he dipped his hand in his pocket and brought out a phone. He operated it for a few seconds then placed it back in his pocket.

"Why are you asking me all this questions anyway? You're not my dad just because you are part of the family doesn't make you the boss of me." he looked like he wanted to roll his eyes or shoot me.

"Let's go" he said walking across the front of the car to the driver's door.

Really having no choice, I got in as well.

"I'm not part if your family" he said pulling out if the lot.

Weird. He seemed to know a lot about me.

"Well then who are you? Are" I swallowed hard " are you going to hurt me?"

He looked at me for a few seconds before answering.

"No"

Even his voice was sexy and Proud like him. Wait, did I just say his voice was sexy? OK so I have officially lost it.

Chapter Three

MY head hurts so so bad. I want to die. I'd just finished my math exam. My mouth still feels like I have a cotton but on my tongue.

"Why again did I agree to go partying a day before finals? "I asked myself as I walk back to my dorm.

Lydia and Chloe already finished and submitted early, my guess? To go back to the dorms and sleep. It was my plan as well.

And opening the door I guessed right, Lydia was lying halfway on her bed the lower part of her was on the floor. And Chloe?? I can't say, her neck was in a really awkward position.

And they were still both in their uniform guess they didn't have time to change.

And I did the same flinging my backpack by my bed I got in and snuggled my pillow.

***

Someone was shaking my shoulder.

"Dee"

please leave me alone.

"Dee!"

Maybe if I ignored her, she'd leave me alone.

"Wake up Dolores or so help me God, I'll give you a bath."

"Urgh! Fine" I said getting up.

Lydia was standing in front of me her golden blond hair was a mess. Chloe came out of the bathroom holding a bowl of water.

"No need for the water, I'm up already" I said raising both hands in surrender.

"We gotta talk" she said placing the bowl on a chair.

"Alright", I said folding my legs.

"So last night rocked big time" that was Lydia.

"Uh hu?"

"What happened?" Chloe said in a no-nonsense voice.

"We were so worried I thought someone kidnapped you or something. Number one rule of girl time, stick together" Chloe scolded.

"I'm sorry okay." What do I tell them?

"And then those hot guys in suit almost manhandled us to that car saying they were taking us to you. I thought I was being kidnapped!"

"Am sorry, okay" I said in a small voice, what am I gonna tell them?

"You were there one second and the next? Boom! We were worried sick. I for one thought you've been kidnapped or dead somewhere in a ditch." Chloe scolded.

"I second that" Lydia said waving her hand.

We both turned towards her and glared.

"I'm really sorry, I got in a bit of a problem." I need to think of something fast, can't really tell them about the family.

After the empty lot last night, the drive back with dark and dangerous and yes, I decided to call him that from now on. Dark cause everything was dark about him, from his charcoal hair to the black on black suit that hugged his muscled arms. And for dangerous, didn't need anyone to tell me that he was dangerous, hell everything about him screamed danger, Was a very quiet on.

More like I was trying really hard not so freak out and scream bloody murder.

I had also wanted to ask him where he was taking me then decided against it.

When he pulled over there was another SUV in front of us. There i found Chloe and Lydia they seemed frightened and as i got out from the car they did the same and after asking if i was alright we strolled back to the academy and tip toed to our dorm.

I was asleep before my head hit my pillow but not before I got a 'you-are-so-explaining-yourself-look from Chloe.

Which brings me back to this conversation.

They gave me a look that screamed 'well'.

"My cousin saw me and the she was going to tell my parents" I decide to go with the truth, or parts of it anyways.

"Whoa! You mean that blonde?" Lydia asked.

I nodded my head.

"No offence but she looked like a whore" Lyd said.

"Non taken, she's a grade A Bitch" I scoffed out.

"Anyway, the owner of the club is friends with my family so he gave me a ride" could I come up with a better excuse? No way they were going to buy that.

"Mmm that makes sense" Chloe said nodding her head.

It does?! I try to keep a neutral expression.

"But seriously Dee, you never told us you knew so many hot guys. I mean that makes sense! You never swoon over cute guys here at the academy because you've seen more hotter guys!" Lydia all but yelled.

"That is so true for a while there I was wondering if you didn't have ovaries" Chloe deadpans with a flip of her hair.

"That is so so gross" I said as we all burst out laughing.

"But really if I wasn't freaking out of over the whole kidnapping thing, I would have jumped one of them" both Chloe and I stared at Lydia.

"What? Don't tell me you haven't fantasize about being Kidnapped and have wild animalistic sex by a guy who looks like a Greek god" she said with wide eyes.

"What!" I screamed and the laughter continued.

****

"And let the packing begin!" Chloe said with a fake French accent.

"Argg!" Lydia scoffed.

I laughed shaking my head and walking to my closet.

Good thing I didn't have much clothes.

After a very gross conversation with my friends about sexual fantasies we got hungry and went to the dinner Hall.

Chloe and Lydia pulled me to the 'rich' kids table where I'd seen Michael again. He asked me why I didn't come back to the party after my visit to the washroom. I'd told him that Lydia and Chloe wanted to go back to the academy so we left.

After that there was an exchange of contacts. Sharing hugs and kisses as everyone said their goodbyes. Some students were even wiping teary faces. Making plans to hangout. It was a little sad.

Now we were back in our dorm rooms to pack because everyone will be vacating the academy tomorrow.

My clothes mainly consisted of tank tops, crop tops, and sweat shirts. A lot of shorts, leggings and sweat pants.

This is one of the times I was glad I didn't own a huge wardrobe like my friends especially Lydia.

The only problem will be my art supplies. I swear I had no idea they were so many.

"Well, I'd have to throw them away." I shrugged.

After throwing out what I didn't need which turned out to be a lot. I strolled into my dorm and made a bee line for my bed.

"You done?" Lydia asked zipping up her fifth suitcase exhaling.

"Hm" I nodded my head and fell on my bed.

"Night Dee"

"Night Lyd" and I fell into a deep slumber.

Chapter Four

***

I don't know how to feel as I see the familiar buildings that lead to my home, can't really call it that, I mean a home is somewhere you feel save and happy. Right?

I should probably feel thrilled as we got closer. Aren't you supposed to feel boundless joy over going home and seeing members of your family again?

Chloe and Lydia always talk about how they missed their family back at the academy.

I only ever talk about my mother.

In case you didn't notice the academy was all about rich kids with wealthy parents whom are sick of or don't have time for their bratty kids.

Half the time Chloe and Lydia often complain about their lack of freedom and how they feel locked up behind the school walls.

As I see thick black reinforced titanium doors slid open with more than a dozen armed guards around the compound. I'm quite sure there were some I can't see.

The SUV I was in pulled up in front if two large doors. Not like I was expecting anyone waiting for my arrival. Okay maybe at lease my mother.

Someone, the driver opened the door for me to step out, I did. He was already holding both my suitcases.

"Thanks, I'll carry it from here" I said holding on to the handles as my hand brushed pass his. He quickly let go and went back to the car, I guess to grab my remaining stuffs, mainly my art supplies. They weren't so much anymore.

Turning around I see the monster of a building looming over me. I felt like a thousand pounds had just been dropped on my little shoulders. I haven't been back here for almost three years.

My friends thought the academy took away their freedom but not for me. For me, the academy was my freedom, it was my breath of fresh air.

And this was my prison. This... This is my prison.

"I can do this" I whispered to myself.

Sighing, I rolled my bags towards the front. Pushing the doors open, I walked in.

"Can't be that bad"

The first thing I saw was the huge sitting room it was empty. I expected it. The first floor was mainly the kitchen, dining room, living room and a few servants' quarters, by the side was a grand staircase that led to the second floor. Mainly occupied lots of bed rooms the size of apartments, a few guest rooms and the study.

The third floor had the master bedrooms and some other dozen rooms I'm not sure what for. Not like I was ever allowed to go exploring or anything.

Everything was pretty much as when I left. Looking around, I use my eyes to search for anyone to me tell where Mother is.

Leaving my bags, I decide to try the kitchen. As I walk in, I see a short feminine figure I recognize I've known her since I was born.

"Mrs. Lupe!" I screamed with excitement.

She turned sharply.

"Lola? Oh, my sweet child" she said drying her hands on her apron.

I ran towards her jumping on her and almost squeezing the life out of her.

"When did you get back" she asked hugging me back.

"I just got here"

"Let me take a look at you" she said pulling me back so she could have a better view of me.

"Look how big you've grown my child"

"Not as big as you" I say in a playful tune.

"You look well, how was school? I've missed you so much" Mrs, Lupe said now wiping away strays of tears on her face.

"I missed you too Mrs. Lupe. And school was fine"

"I'm so glad you are back. Have you seen your mother?"

"No, where is she?"

"She should be on the second floor"

"Okay. What are you cooking? smells delicious, you have no idea how much I missed your food" I whinnied dramatically.

"Lunch is almost ready. Now go see your mother" she rubbed my arms

"Okay Mrs. Lupe." I said hugging her one more time before leaving.

I walked up the stairs. First and second floor. So many stairs you'd think after so many years they'd install an elevator somewhere around here.

The house was really big. Had a west and east wing. Mother stayed in the east wing two years ago, I'm sure that hasn't changed.

The east had a living room by the right. The bedrooms were at the left. I almost walked past the living room and head straight to mother's room. She usually spent so much time in her room when I was younger am not sure now.

Deciding it wouldn't hurt to check I walked towards the living room.

Stepping into room I froze for a second. there she is... My mother, there was no mistaking it her dark brown hair just like mine. There on the sofa in front of the TV.

Forcing myself to unfreeze

"Mother" I whispered.

Her head wiped towards shock filled her gaze.

"Lola"

"Mama" I said walking towards her as she stood up. Arms open and I walked in.

How I missed her." I miss you so. so much mama"

Drawing me back "My baby let me look at you, how much you've grown, you are already a woman."

Huh!

"Don't say weird things mama. I'm still your baby" my face heated.

"Let me hold you again. I missed you too" she said pulling my back into her arms. I squeeze her so hard breathing in her scent.

"Come baby, sit and tell me everything, how was school? and your exams, did you do well? Did anyone give you a hard time? Because if they did, they'd be-"

"Whoa Mama chill" I cut in.

"Everything's okay, I promise" i say, holding her hands.

Years back when I'd just gotten into the academy, I was a bit of a loner.

I wasn't friends with Lydia and Chloe then. Let's just say I found it difficult to make friends. I had limited contact with outsiders gowning up and I didn't have much experience in that department anyway. Making friends.

And I was frightened about blurting to anyone about the family being a part of the Mafia.

Did I mention that some rich kids can be downright mean?

I was bullied big time. The girls especially the bratty ones called me ugly and shapeless.

The guys made passes at me and when I refused even as politely as I could they got mad and called me mean names. One time some guy Maddox he was a real jerk, he cornered me in the library. I'd been so scared but Lydia and Chloe saved me.

They'd been only my roommates then but after that incident I began to open up to them.

They taught me how to defend myself using my words because I wasn't strong enough to use my fists.

"Am glad Lolita" mom said holding my hands in hers.

"So how have you been mama?"

"All is good".

"What... em what about you and Father?" It's being bugging me to ask that question. When I left, they weren't on speaking terms thanks to someone. Me.

A year ago, when mother came to visit me at the school, she'd refused to talk about it. She was worried about me.

"Don't worry about your father. Why don't you go change, unpack and get some rest. I'll call you when lunch is ready"" my mama asked

Cool with me. I am exhausted.

"Wanting to get rid of me so soon. That's fine" I said with a fake annoyance

Getting up I kissed her cheek and walked off.

Chapter Five

I heard loud voices outside my room, someone was screaming like a banshee. I really don't want to know who it is.

After the delicious lunch with mama, I went back to my room. Throughout lunch mother seemed out of it. Like she was sad about something. I told her stories about the academy and about Lydia and Chloe.

When I asked what was making her distracted or sad, she smiled and covered it up. I just have a feeling it'd be something related to father. Was he cheating on her again? Or mistreating her. She wouldn't tell me anything.

In my family it's pretty normal for men to have mistresses. Expected even.

One time when I was twelve and looking for my mama, I didn't see her in her bedroom where she prefers staying or in the library downstairs so I decided to ask Father. I walked in on him with another woman in his study the cloth she was wearing looked like a servant uniform.

Later that day I told mother about what I had seen. She simply smiled and told me it helped him relax.

Now that I think of it, mama didn't seem surprised in the least or even sad. Bothered, but never sad.

So, God forbid I marry a man from the family.

Deciding to see what the hell was going on, I rolled out of bed slipped on my flip flops and walked downstairs.

What was it they say again? curiosity killed the cat. Well in my case it'd be curiosity killed the Lola.

My feet padded down the stairs as I walked towards the living room in the first floor.

In Here the voices were so loud.

Just as I stepped on the bottom stair something flew past my Head and smacked the wall. Shattering into a dozen pieces.

Was that a phone?

"What the hell Father!!!" a high pitched voice screamed followed by the sound of another glass object breaking

Now in the living room I see two blond figures standing in the middle of the room.

Katharina and her equally devilish mother.

"I'm the one who should be getting married not that whore!" Katherina yelled.

Who is kat calling a whore? That name was usually reserved for me.

I don’t know how she can get away with speaking like that, especially in front of her father.

"I am older that she is. That good for nothing! she cannot marry before me! it is an insult on my honor and pride as a woman!"Katerina yelled, stomping her foot. Well, that's a first.

"You? Pride? Kat really?" Carlos mocked, if I was closer to him. I'd have asked him for a high five. I was just thinking the exact same thing.

"What's going on here?" Someone asked form behind me and I yelped turning around to see my father.

"Dolores" he said in a flat voice.

My father is a handsome man, well fit in his mid forties. light brown hair cut short, from where i'm standing, i see he has more gray hair than he used to, dusting his temples. his sharp brown eyes which always gave me a whip like feeling stares at me even now.

You'd think he'd be a tad bit pleased to see me after not seeing me for almost three years.

When I was little, I always wanted to please him. I would assist mama in preparing dinner and make sure to do well in my studies so he'd smile at me even once but he never did. Always begging for his attention but he'd just say and I quote: "Go bother your mother Dolores" That broke my little heart. But now, I'm already used to it.

"Father" I replied in an equally flat voice.

My mother is standing beside him.

"You stupid Bitch!" I quickly turned around to see Katherina making her way towards me only to be intercepted by her mother.

"Not now my dear" my Aunt Sara says.

"Hello Kat" I greet with a small smile as my gaze scan the room.

At the end of the room sat Manuel Kat's father, my uncle in his usual black suit, white dress shirt and black tie. i don't think I've ever seen him in anything other than a suit in my seventeen years of life. Sorry, eighteen actually. I keep forgetting i just turned eighteen.

Sitting on the other send of the couch is his son, Carlos Kat's younger brother, and my favorite cousin.

"You dare to raise your hand on me" I snapped my gaze back on Kat who is now pointing at me with one perfectly manicured nail. Everyone turned to look at me.

Okay I've been thinking of ways to get out of this. I knew there was no way she'd let it pass.

In the Mafia, hitting someone higher than you either by rank or age is just... wrong. In fact, it's not done at all, like ever.

That's why her and her mama Sara always mistreated me and my mama and got away with it.

I've thought about playing ignorance and act like she was crazy.

"What are you talking about? I just got here" I said with a confusion crawling all over my face, it's the same look I use when I'm sneaking back into the hostel after curfew and get caught by security.

There's no way I'd admit to hitting my cousin. I wouldn't just get punished for being disrespectful but I'd have to explain why I was in a certain night club.

"Don't you dare play dumb I saw you in a club two nights ago!" She snapped stumping her feet almost making me laugh. Real mature there. She looked so ridiculous in her yellow summer dress and read heeled slippers.

"A night club? You were in a night club?" I gasped acting surprised. Wow when did I become this convincing a liar?

"You were in a night club?" Manuel asked in a deadly voice. Now everyone was looking at Katherina.

"Mm n-no of-of course not Father" she stammered out realizing her mistake.

I fought the smile tugging at my lips, I would grin if it wouldn't give me away.

"Don't you dare lie to me Katherina what have I said about whoring around?" Manuel glares.

She wanted to put me in trouble. Now the table are turned.

"It's this bitch's fault." she points at me.

"How is this my fault?" I asked.

"We have more important things to do Manuel, discipline your daughter later" Father said from behind me as he walked towards the couch taking a sit. Mama followed and pulled me along. she tugged me to sit by her on the couch.

She makes a sound of distaste at the state of my hair then runs her fingers through the ends hanging around my face. I've missed this, her fussing over me. and me acting like she was being a bother.

"You need hair treatments dear" she said when I finally bat her fingers away.

"Hey Lola, looking good" Carlos said. He'd always being kind to me unlike his mum and sister.

"Thank you, Carlos," I smiled.

"Dolores?" I looked up at Manuel when he calls me.

I smiled at him. Not really knowing what to say.

Everyone was quiet for a moment. it was awkward alright... Really.

"How are your studies?" Manuel asked. I could see he was struggling with what to say. Manuel hast really talked to me much, like I could literally count the amount to times he's spoken to me even if we lived in the same house since i was born.

"It was Fine Sir" I replied

"Thats good" he says a moment later his black hair slicked back.

We went back to the awkward silence when I couldn't take it anymore I blurted out "Well whose getting married?" I ask also wanting to change the topic.

Everyone snapped their gaze to me. Why was everyone looking at me?

"Should I tell her or who wants to do the honors?" Kat sneered.

what's up with her? I mean except from the slap but she deserved it.

"Tell me what?" I look around.

"You are getting married Lola. The one getting married is you" Carlos said.

I freeze. A laugh escaping my lips.

"That was a joke, right?" I asked in a small voice when the others didn't join me.

No one said anything.

They're lying. They have to be.

"Mother?" I said looking at my mother and getting up from the sofa.

"Am so sorry baby" she replied her eyes glittering with tears.

"Please tell me this is a lie?" I plead

"You're all lairs!" I yelled.

Now tears were trailing down my cheeks.

"Am so sorry lol-"

"THIS IS CRAZY MOTHER! Insane! You're all crazy!!!" I yelled.

"Don't talk to your mother like that-"Father started but I cut him off.

"I don't care. This is stupid. I'm not getting married! Do you hear me?" I spat.

Mama was already crying. Manuel looks bored Father looked mad, Carlos face was expressionless. Kat and her mother seemed to be enjoying this, of cause they are.

"You will watch your tongue Dolores" Father said

"I'm just getting home, why are you sending me away again?" I cried I don't wait for their reply. I turned around walking away running to my room

This cannot be happening. It just can't.

I'm not getting married.

Chapter Six

Last night as I walked away from the living room, I told myself that I wouldn't cry and that it wasn't true, it couldn't be true. I told myself That I'd be strong.

But as soon as I walked into my room and locked my door. The water works started coming. Loud sobs from deep inside me.

Because I knew, I just knew that it was true. I was getting married and there's no two ways about it.

So, I cried my heart out until my eyes closed and I slept off.

Now I was awake my pillow was damp with my tears I'm pretty sure if I squeezed it hard enough, I'd get a few droplets of tears.

Mother came a few hours ago. Asking me to come down. Or have just breakfast. I ignored her for a while and when she kept insisting i yelled at her to go away.

Explains why she's was sad yesterday. I know it wasn't her fault hell she probably didn't have a choice either. But I just feel betrayed.

How could she let them do this?

I stared at my clock. The time was fifteen past four in the afternoon. I haven't eaten in about twenty four hours yet I wasn't hungry. My stomach felt like it was filled with lead.

I knew I'd have to to face reality to soon but for I just wanted to stay in my bed snuggling under my sheets.

I'd deal with the wedding crap later maybe tomorrow but not today.

***

I'd being up for a few minutes. mother's knocking woke me up again at around six in the evening. I think she was crying. She'd threatened to have someone breakdown the door if I didn't let her in. But I was still mad. What can I say? I know how to hold a grudge. I think she noticed I wasn't going to open the door so she gave up and left. That was two hours ago.

Right now, I'm starving. You'd think the anger would take my appetite away but what can I say? I'm not used to being empty.

Rolling out of bed still dressed in my pajama pants and sponge bob square pants tank. I pull my hair into a messy ponytail and walked downstairs.

My mission? Go to the kitchen, get some dinner and go back up. Don't talk to anyone if I can help it. if I'm lucky enough I won't even see anyone.

But then since I've never boasted that the big guy upstairs loves me everyone just had to be having dinner in the kitchen today.

The not so important conversation they were having paused as soon as I entered. Even Manuel was here. If you asked me before today, I could have sworn he didn't know the way to the kitchen. So, either this was planned or a lot had changed in the two and a half years I was away.

"Lola come sit, Lisa will make you a plate" mother said. Her face looked puffy. She's being crying.

"Thanks, but am not very hungry" okay so that was a major lie. But so, what? I don't want to see anyone right now.

"We have to discuss your marriage" My father snapped.

"You can't expect me to marry someone I don't even know! to get married just like that, to get married just like that? out of the blue?" I snapped right back anger coating my voice.

"Yes, you will Dolores, and at the night of your wedding you will spread your legs and carry out your duty!" He deadpan. His eyes filled with rage.

I glared at him. How can he be like this? why is he like this? "Why does it have to be me? I'm sure someone else would be more than happy to take my pla-"

"Enough! you two" Manuel cut in. stack irritation on his face.

God I'd almost forgotten he was in the room as well.

"I can't believe I'm saying this but Lola is right father. We shouldn't force her" I snapped my neck so quickly to kat I think I broke something but I'll deal with that later. Did kat just supported me? I mean we've being fighting over everything for as long as I can remember.

"The choice is not hers. Dolores was chosen. There isn't anything we can do about that." Manuel replied.

"But that is so unfair. I am older than Lola. Therefore, I should wed first, papa this is an insult to me." Kat snapped. "How will show my face outside.

"See, Kat is all too pleased to get married, let her" I argued.

"It has to be you Dolores" Manuel looks bored.

"Wait, if this is about physical appearance, we can work on it" everyone looked at me like I'd lost my mind

"What? It can be done just ask the Kardashians plastics surgery is like magic these days."

Kat glared at me. Mother and father looked confused. Manuel looks bored as usual. Sara and Carlos look on the verge of laughter.

"It has to be you, Dolores. I won't say it again. Now do as your father says. I have work to do." With that Manuel got up and left.

I did the same.

Leaving without the food I came for.

I went to bed after that.

***

"Can't hold this off for much longer" I said to myself as I rolled out of bed the next morning.

In my bathroom I relived my throbbing bladder. Then looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked like hell.

My dark brown hair looked like two rats played around in it.

A bath wouldn't do. I need a shower. A hot shower.

After washing up. I stood in front of my mirror and started working on my hair it was always a pain untangling the knots and brushing this mane I call hair pulling all of it over my left shoulder and decide to star from the tips just like how Lydia thought me.

Around my first time in the academy my hair was a mess all the times. I remember Chloe asking me to cut it but I'd told her I didn't want to.

Ha! the last time I cut my hair it didn't end well.

I'd asked mama to cut my hair so It would looked like that of a girl I saw in a stupid cartoon.

Mama cut it alright. After I asked her repeatedly for a week. When father came back home, he was pissed. He was so mad he back handed me. It was the first time he ever hurt me, physically at least.

After that he'd said women aren't supposed to cut their hair. Or they'll look ugly and no one will marry an ugly wife.

Then he'd gone ahead and told me never to cut my hair ever again.

Now I looked at my neatly brushed long hair that I pulled into a high pony tail. "Tada!" I said in a sing song voice.

Existing the bathroom, I grab a pair black jean shorts and white tank top and pull them on.

Taking a deep breath "this is going to be a long ass day" I said to myself before unlocking my doors and steeping outside.

Deciding to go to the kitchen because I know almost everyone will be there and let's face it, I'm hungry.

I passed a few guards in the hallways the first one looked at me from afar then quickly looked away as I got closer. As did the rest. I recognized a few from two years ago.

As I walked pass them without even spearing them a glance a part of me felt guilty. A small part. Normally I'd smile or wave at them but right now I am pissed at Father, mother, Manuel and everyone else in this Goddamned family. I am a girl on a mission. Have breakfast then find out everything I can about the criminal I'm supposed to marry. And yes, I said criminal. There's no way a man can be in the Mafia with clean hands. Am not really sure what they actually do but I'm quite sure killing is part of their initiation process.

As I enter the kitchen, I see some servants running around. Mrs, Lupe making breakfast.

By the side of the kitchen is a huge dining table were everyone usually have breakfast. Carlos was already sitting down there. A steaming cup of what I assume is coffee in front of him.

As if he felt my gaze on him, he raised his head and looked towards the entrance where I was standing.

"Lola, Good morning" he said in a clear voice. his gray eyes similar to mine

"Hi Carlos" I replied tiredly before walking in.

His gaze raked down me slowly before coming back up.

He had this wired look in his eyes.

"Lola?" I turned to see Mrs. Lupe making her ways towards me a guilty look in her eyes." My dear I was getting worried about you"

"Morning Mrs. Lupe" I continued towards the breakfast table.

"What would you have dear?"

"I'll have whatever your making" I replied taking a sit in front of Carlos.

"Where is everyone?" I ask after a few minutes of awkward silence.

"I'm not sure I just got up to-"

He was cut off by Mrs. Lupe "here is your breakfast my dear and some coffee" she said placing a plate of scrambled eggs, toasted bread and bacon in front of me.

And the smell oh my God, divine. My stomach practically begged me to dig in and I did.

After a few bites.

"Thanks, Mrs. Lupe" I said and she gave me a small smile but not looking at me in the eyes.

That's odd, she seems almost guilty. Why would sh ?- and then it hit me. She knew!

Clearing my throat, I asked."Mrs. Lupe did you know about it too?"

Her smile fell. "Yes, Lola dear I've always known I'm so sorry." She said in a small voice.

"You too Carlos did you know?" I asked facing him this time.

"Yes Lola" he said in a flat voice.

So basically, everyone knew but me. I wanted to be pissed and freak out but honestly, I didn't have the strength for that.

Just then mother walked in her face in a worried expression.

"Mother?" I might be mad at her but I still worry.

"Lola oh my God I was so worries. I was just at your room and you weren't there."

"Am fine. I just needed to process all that." Now I feel kind of guilty for making her worry.

Mother comes to take a sit beside me.

"Mama, we need to talk. You owe me some answers"

"Mm of course whatever you want sweetheart"

Mrs. Lupe makes her escape in the name of making breakfast for mother.

"Good morning, Beatrice" Carlos said and I am reminded of his presence.
