Chapter 4
LYRA
The night swallowed me as I ran, the betrayal and heartbreak weighing on me like chains. Each breath was a battle, and Astra’s growls echoed in my mind, urging me to move faster. My pack was no longer my home. Ronan had made that painfully clear. I wasn’t welcome, wasn’t wanted.
I stopped only when my legs gave out, collapsing by the edge of a stream. The icy water mirrored my shattered reflection, but I refused to cry. They didn’t deserve my tears. Sage’s smug face and Caspian’s silence haunted me, but it was Ronan’s words that cut the deepest. I wasn’t just an outcast; I was nothing to them.
But I wasn’t nothing. I still had a name, a wolf, and my will to fight.
We need help, Astra said, her voice steady in my mind. Alone, we’ll be vulnerable. But there’s someone we can trust.
She didn’t need to say the name. I knew who she meant. Ivy.
Ivy had been my secret solace for years. She was from the Shadow Veil Pack, one of our rivals, and the only person who truly understood what it felt like to be trapped by pack politics. Our friendship had been a dangerous gamble, one I’d kept hidden even from Caspian.
With shaking hands, I pulled the pendant from my mother out of my bag. The small, enchanted crystal shimmered faintly, its magic attuned to Ivy. I focused on her face, her warm smile, and whispered her name. The pendant grew warm in my palm, the magic reaching out to her like a beacon.
Minutes later, the bushes rustled, and a familiar scent filled the air. “Lyra?” Ivy’s voice was soft, cautious, but when she stepped into view, her golden eyes were filled with worry.
“Ivy,” I breathed, relief flooding through me.
She knelt beside me, her hands gripping my shoulders. “What happened? Why did you call me? Are you hurt?”
I shook my head, my voice breaking. “I’m not hurt, but I need help. I’ve been betrayed and disowned. I can’t go back. I don’t know what to do.”
Her expression darkened, and her wolf, Faye, flared in her gaze. “Those bastards. They never deserved you.”
“They’ve ruined everything,” I said, my voice trembling. “And now I have no one.”
“That’s not true,” Ivy said fiercely. “You have me. And I know someone who can help.”
Her words stirred a flicker of hope in my chest. “Who?”
“The Golden Dusk Pack,” Ivy said. “Alpha Damon Frost.”
The name was familiar—he was known across the territories for his strength and cunning. But he was also notorious for his loss. His Luna had died tragically, leaving his pack fractured and him searching for a new Luna to solidify his rule.
“Ivy,” I said, shaking my head. “You know what happened the last time someone decided my fate. I can’t trust another Alpha.”
“I wouldn’t suggest this if I thought it would hurt you,” Ivy said, her eyes softening. “Damon is my cousin, Lyra. He’s not like Ronan or Matias. He’s fair, and he values strength. You’re exactly what he needs right now—a strong wolf with an Alpha blood. And this alliance would give you the protection you need to survive.”
The idea churned in my mind. Another marriage. Another alliance. But this time, it wouldn’t be forced. If I agreed, it would be on my terms. And maybe, just maybe, I could reclaim the power that Ronan and Sage had stolen from me.
“Do you trust him?” I asked.
“With my life,” Ivy said without hesitation.
I took a deep breath, my resolve hardening. “Then take me to him.”
The journey to the Golden Dusk Pack’s territory was swift and tense. Ivy led the way, her presence a comforting anchor. The forest gave way to the pack’s border, where golden light bathed the land in a surreal glow. Two sentinels stood watch, their eyes narrowing as we approached.
“Ivy,” one of them said, his voice laced with surprise. “What brings you here?”
“I need to see Damon,” Ivy said firmly. “It’s urgent.”
The sentinels exchanged a glance but nodded. “He’s in the council hall.”
Ivy led me through the sprawling territory, and soon, we stood before the imposing structure of the Golden Dusk council hall. Its stone walls were adorned with intricate carvings that seemed to hum with power.
Inside, the air was thick with authority. Damon stood at the head of the room, his tall frame radiating an aura that demanded respect. His piercing blue eyes locked onto me the moment we entered.
“Ivy,” he said, his voice deep and commanding. “Who is this?”
“This is Lyra,” Ivy said, stepping aside to let me face him. “She’s from the Red Crescent Pack, and she needs sanctuary.”
Damon’s gaze assessed me, sharp and calculating. “Why have you come here?”
I straightened, meeting his eyes despite the weight of his presence. “Because I’ve been betrayed by my pack. I need an alliance. Protection. In exchange, I offer my loyalty.”
His lips twitched into a faint smile, though his eyes remained unreadable. “Loyalty isn’t given freely. Why should I trust you?”
I took a step forward, letting Astra’s presence flare in my mind. “Because I have the blood of an Alpha, and I’ve been underestimated for too long. I won’t let anyone else control my fate. I’ll fight for my place, if that’s what it takes.”
Damon’s expression shifted, a spark of interest lighting his eyes. “Bold. I like that.” He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low rumble. “I’ll offer you an alliance, Lyra. But it comes with a price.”
“What price?” I asked, my heart pounding.
“Be my Luna,” he said, his gaze unwavering. “Not just as an alliance, but as my equal. Together, we can rebuild what’s been broken—for both of us.”
Chapter 5
LYRA
The guest chamber Ivy and I were given in the Golden Dusk Pack was quiet, but my mind wasn’t. Sleep evaded me, and every time I closed my eyes, the weight of Damon’s words echoed in my head. Be my Luna.
Ivy sat beside me on the edge of the bed, her hand gently squeezing mine. “You don’t have to decide right now,” she whispered, her voice soothing. “But you can’t let fear hold you back, Lyra. Damon’s offer isn’t just about survival—it’s a chance to reclaim your power.”
I exhaled shakily. “But what if I’m stepping into another cage, Ivy? What if this is just another way for someone else to control me?”
Ivy’s golden eyes softened, her loyalty unwavering. “Then you break the bars, Lyra. You’re stronger than anyone who’s tried to chain you. Damon may be an Alpha, but he’s not your enemy. This time, you’ll be the one calling the shots.”
Her words struck a chord. My betrayal still burned, but beneath it, a simmering determination began to take root. I couldn’t afford to falter now—not after everything I’d lost.
The sun rose far too soon, its light spilling through the thick curtains and forcing me out of restless thoughts. Ivy nudged me awake with a knowing look, her presence a steadying force.
“Let’s go?” she said simply.
Damon was already waiting for me in the council hall when I arrived. His piercing blue eyes followed me as I entered, his stance composed yet undeniably commanding. The weight of his authority filled the room, but I refused to let it overwhelm me.
“You’ve come,” he said, his voice a low rumble.
“I have questions before I agree to anything,” I replied, meeting his gaze head-on. Astra growled approvingly in my mind, proud of my resolve.
Damon inclined his head, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. “Ask.”
I stepped closer, my fists clenched at my sides. “Why me? You could have chosen anyone to be your Luna, someone with ties to your pack. Why would you risk aligning yourself with an outcast from the Red Crescent Pack?”
His smirk faded, replaced by something colder, more calculating. “Because you’re not just an outcast. You’re an Alpha’s daughter. You carry power in your blood, even if your pack was too blind to see it. My pack needs a leader who can stand beside me, not cower behind me.”
His words hit their mark, igniting something fierce within me. “And what do you expect in return?”
“Your loyalty. Your strength. Nothing less,” he said, stepping closer. “This isn’t about control, Lyra. It’s about rebuilding. My pack needs stability, and you need protection. Together, we can have both.”
The air between us grew tense, his wolf pressing against mine in an unspoken challenge. But instead of backing down, Astra rose to meet him, our combined defiance filling the space.
“Fine,” I said, my voice steady. “I’ll marry you. But I won’t be a silent partner. If this is an alliance, I expect to have an equal say in every decision.”
Damon’s lips curved into a satisfied smile; his approval palpable. “Agreed.”
The ceremony happened faster than I anticipated. That same evening, the entire Golden Dusk Pack gathered in the moonlit clearing, the weight of their stares pressing down on me. Ivy stood beside me, her hand a comforting presence on my arm.
Damon stepped forward, his presence commanding absolute silence. His wolf, massive and golden-eyed, loomed just beneath his skin, radiating dominance. I squared my shoulders, refusing to shrink beneath his gaze.
“Tonight, we seal a bond that will unite our futures,” Damon announced, his voice carrying through the crowd. “Lyra, daughter of the Red Crescent Pack, will become my Luna. Together, we will rebuild what has been lost and forge something stronger.”
Murmurs rippled through the pack, but no one dared question his decision. I took a deep breath and stepped forward, standing beside Damon as the pack watched.
The ritual began with the binding of our hands, a golden cord entwined around our wrists. Damon’s hand was warm against mine, his grip firm yet not unkind.
“Do you accept this bond, Lyra?” The elder officiating the ceremony asked, her voice steady.
“I do,” I said, my voice unwavering despite the storm raging within me.
“And you, Damon?”
“I do,” he replied, his tone resolute.
The cord between us burned briefly, sealing the bond with a flare of golden light. The pack howled in unison, their voices carrying the weight of their acceptance—or perhaps their resignation.
I glanced at Damon, his expression unreadable. The tension between us was undeniable, a mix of unspoken challenges and tentative trust.
As the howls faded, Damon leaned closer, his breath warm against my ear. “This is only the beginning, Lyra. Prove to me you’re as strong as you claim to be.”
Before I could respond, a low growl echoed from the shadows, cutting through the celebration like a knife. The crowd stilled, their joy giving way to unease. Damon’s wolf flared in his eyes as he stepped in front of me, his voice a sharp command.
“Stay behind me,” he ordered.
A figure emerged from the darkness; their scent unmistakable. My blood turned to ice as recognition dawned.
